그러나 레위 지파에게는 모세가 유산을 주지 않았다. 하나님이 그들에게 말씀하신 대로, 주 이스라엘의 하나님이 바로 그들의 유산이기 때문이다. (여호수아 13:33)

미국 본토 최초 한국교회가 "상항한국인연합감리교회"입니다. 1903년 도산 안창호 선생님이 인삼장수들과 성경공부를 했다는 기록으로 1903년이 이 교회의 시작년도입니다. 사실 하와이 사탕수수 농장 계약이 긑나고 많은 한인들이 샌프란시스코로 이주를 합니다. 그리고 당시 감리교회 교단이 Korean Mission이라는 소위 조선으로 떠나는 선교사들이 머물 숙소겸 선교센터를 만들었는데 그곳을 중심으로 샌프란시스코를 중심으로 오클랜드, 바카빌, 스탁턴 그리고 멀리는 프레즈노까지 한인목회자를 파송하여 흩어져있는 한인들을 대상으로 사역을 하게 합니다. 당시 대부분의 한인들은 인천내리교회, (아펜젤러선교사와 언더우드선교사(장로교)가 처음 조선땅을 밟고 함께 에배드린 곳을 기념으로 세운교회)의 교인들로 구성되어 있었기 때문에 교회와 한인이민자들의 삶은 동시에 시작되었습니다.

특히 당시 예배와 모임은 처음 태극기를 계양하며 국기에 대한 경례와 간단한 독립의지를 다지고 예배를 드리는 특별한 모양으로 기록에 남아있습니다. 이런 모습은 신한민보(이민최초 한인신문)에 잘 기록되어 있습니다.

분배는 아니지만, 대부분 농장 노동자의 일을 해야했던 한인들은 농장지역으로 흩어졌습니다. 가장 많은 한인들이 당시에 머문곳은 프레즈노 밑에 리들리, 다뉴바 지역으로 지금도 한인들의 묘지와 이승만 안창호선생이 머물렀던 호텔이 아직도 남아있습니다.

땅을 분배받은 것은 아니지만 당시 한인들은 캘리포니아를 약속의 땅으로 여기고 최선을 다해 모금을 해서 독립운동자금의 대부분의 지원했습니다. 그 중심에 상항한국인연합감리교회가 있고, 오클랜드한인연합감리교회가 있습니다.

어제 한인코커스 실행위원회로 상항한국인연합감리교회에 모였습니다. 평균연령 85세교인들이 모여있는 세대교체에는 실패했지만 이 교회가 붙들고 있는 숨결과 헌신은 정성껏 마련한 점심식사를 먹으며 느낄 수 있었습니다.

교회는 성장과 부흥 그리고 쇠퇴가 반복됩니다. 어제의 부흥과 오늘의 쇠퇴, 이유가 어찌되었던 온전한 그리스도인을 양육하는 것보다, 오래된 기억이 우선순위를 잠식해서 그럴수도 있고, 때를 놓쳤거나 분란으로 인해 생긴 어려움이 분위기를 그리 만들 수도 있습니다.

오늘 읽은 본문은 요단 동편에 땅을 분배받는 지파에 대한 이야기와 동시에 레위지파는 유산을 받지 못했는데 그 이유가 "하나님이 바로 그들의 유산이다"라는 구절에 대한 내용입니다. "하나님이 바로 유산이다"라는 고백은 땅을 분배받는 유산이나 하나님을 유산으로 여기는 것의 저울질한 무게가 똑같다는 의미입니다. 어쩌면 더 큰 의미로 하나님을 유산으로 받은 레위인들은 더 큰 유업을 받았다고 생각할 수 있습니다.

반대로 하나님을 모르는 자들에게 이런 고백은 허황된 것이고 손해라고 생각할 수 있습니다.

하지만, 분명한 것은 교회는 "하나님을 유산으로 여기는 공동체"입니다. 이것보다 다른 것들이 우선시 되었을때 우리들이 경험하는 교회는 그런것들로 분란이 일어납니다.

신앙생활은 그리고 교회를 세워가는 것은 쉬운 것이 아닙니다. 단순해 보이지만, 그 안에 작동하는 여러가지 불편함과 불안함 또는 공평하지 못하다는 생각들이 마음을 혼란시킬 수 있습니다. 이런 모든 것들을 넘어서야 교회의 본질, 즉 하나님을 유산을 받았다!는 고백을 할 수 있을 것 같습니다. 반드시 기억해야합니다. 교회는 하나님이 바로 유산이라는 사실을...

하나님이 유산이 된다는 말은 어떤 의미인것 같으세요? 교회가 특히 그래야한다는 것은 어떤 뜻일가요?

1. 금요일입니다. 한주가 벌써 금요일을 맞이하면서 시간이 이렇게 빨리가네 하는 생각을 하게 합니다. 내일 새벽예배와 특히 디너처치 점심 모임이있습니다. 3달간 예배하면서 영어예배 모임을 든든히 세워가기 위한 모임입니다. 샘윤목사님이 오시고, 이번에는 LA갈비와 우삼겹을 사놓고 친교를 하려고 합니다. 잘 먹는다는 건 잘 해야할일들이 많다는 뜻이겠죠. 이래저래 많이들 못오실것 같지만 알차게 모일수 있도록 기도해주세요.

“But to the tribe of Levi Moses gave no inheritance. As the LORD, the God of Israel, had said to them, the offerings made by fire to the LORD are their inheritance.”(Joshua 13:33)

The first Korean church established on the U.S. mainland is the San Francisco Korean United Methodist Church. Its beginning is traced back to 1903, when educator and independence leader Ahn Chang-ho gathered with ginseng merchants for Bible study. After the sugarcane labor contracts in Hawaii ended, many Koreans migrated to San Francisco. Around that time, the Methodist Church built a Korean Mission House—both a residence for missionaries heading to Korea and a ministry center for Korean immigrants. From this place, pastors were sent to Oakland, Vacaville, Stockton, and as far as Fresno to minister to scattered Korean laborers.

Most of the early immigrants had been members of Incheon Naeri Church—a historic church marking the first worship service held by missionaries Appenzeller and Underwood. Because of this, church life and immigrant life began together, intertwined from the beginning.

Early worship gatherings had a unique form. The community raised the Korean flag, pledged themselves again to the cause of independence, and then entered into worship. These moving scenes are well recorded in Shinhan Minbo, the first Korean American newspaper.

While land was not apportioned to Korean immigrants, most labored on farms throughout California. The largest communities formed in Reedley and Dinuba near Fresno—a region where Korean cemeteries and historic sites connected to Syngman Rhee and Ahn Chang-ho still remain today.

Though they owned no land, Koreans regarded California as a kind of promised land. They worked tirelessly, saved faithfully, and sent much of their earnings to support the independence movement. At the center of this effort stood the San Francisco Korean UMC and the Oakland Korean UMC.

Yesterday, our Korean Caucus Executive Committee gathered at the San Francisco Korean UMC. The average age of the congregation is now around 85. While generational transition has not happened successfully, we could still feel the breath, sacrifice, and dedication that have sustained this church—especially as we shared the meal they had so lovingly prepared.

Churches rise, flourish, and decline. A church may experience yesterday’s revival and today’s challenges. A community may be slowed because long-held memories overshadow the urgency of forming mature disciples, or because of missed opportunities, or conflicts that left lingering wounds.

Today’s passage describes the allotment of land on the east side of the Jordan—and yet the Levites receive no land. The Scripture says, “because the LORD Himself is their inheritance.”This confession means that the weight of receiving land as inheritance and the weight of receiving God as inheritance are equal on the scale. In fact, one might say the Levites received the greater portion.

To those who do not know God, such a confession may sound foolish, even like a loss.But Scripture is clear: the Church is a community that regards God Himself as its inheritance. Whenever something else becomes more important than that, conflict eventually finds its way in.

Faith is not easy, and building a church is never simple. It may look straightforward, but many internal tensions—discomfort, fear, or a sense of unfairness—can unsettle our hearts. But beyond these struggles stands the essential truth:

We are a people whose inheritance is God. And we must never forget this.
