Joshua 17:14–18, December 12, 2025 (Fri), 여호수아 17 : 14~18, 2025.12.12 (금)

17 여호수아가 다시 요셉 족속인 에브라임 지파와 서쪽 므낫세 지파에게 말하였다. “당신들은 큰 무리요, 큰 세력도 가졌으니, 한 몫만 가질 일이 아닙니다. 18산간지방도 당신들의 것이 될 것이오. 산간지방이라 하더라도, 그 곳을 개간하여 이 끝에서 저 끝까지 차지하시오. 가나안 사람들이 철 병거를 가져서 강하다 하더라도, 당신들은 그들을 쫓아낼 수 있소.” (여호수아 17:17-18)

분배의 속성은 공평이 담보되었는가에 있는듯 합니다. 땅이 분배되면서 비교와 차별에 대한 반응이 왜 없었겠습니까. 여호수아는 이를 위해 최선을 다했겠지만, 그만큼 쉽지 않은 과정을 지나쳐야했을 것입니다.

어떤 결과를 얻기위해서는 과정을 거쳐야하고 이 과정은 순탄하지만은 않습니다. 어제 아침 애나집사의 아버지 이지화 집사님이 하나님의 부르심을 받았습니다. 서둘러 재훈집사님과 제나와 태호가 한국에 가야해서 오늘 새벽에 공항에 라이드를 하고 돌아왔습니다. 가는 도중에 언젠가는 마주할 시간이라는 것에 아이들도 모르긴해도 그 분위기와 상황을 인지한듯 말없이 공항에 도착했고, 재훈 집사는 언제가 마주하게될 아이들이 자라서 떠는 시간이 안왔으면 한다는 이야기에 시간은 가고 그 시간은 꼭 마주한다는 대화를 나누었습니다.

마침내, 가나안 정착이라는 큰 소망은 이루어졌지만, 이런 기대는 분명히 누군가의 희생과 만만치 않은 현실을 관통해야하는 일이 남았을 것입니다.

어제 라디오를 듣다가 한국계 참전용사가 파나마 전쟁에서 부상을 입어서 퍼플 훈장까지 받은 분인데 한국으로 추방을 당했다는 뉴스를 들었습니다. 아마 전쟁이후 PTSD로 약물에 중독되었었는데 이런 문제들이 범죄와 연결되었던 모양입니다. 청문회에서 국토부장관에게 질의하는 한 의원은 줌으로 이 분을 연결해서 강하게 미국의 ICE정책에 대해서 질타하는 장면도 보았습니다.

이민자로 살아간다는 것은 일반적으로 겪지 않아도 되는 일들을 겪으며 살아가야합니다. 한국에 가족을 두고 살아가는 분들은 밤이나 새벽에 오는 전화에 놀라고, 급하게 비싼 항공권을 끊어서 한국에 급히 나가야할 상황도 생기고, 문제가 발생하면 공평하게 다뤄지지 않고 차별을 당하는 것을 무기력하게 바라봐야하는 경우도 생깁니다.

억울함은 기대한만큼 받아지지 않을때 부터 시작되고, 나와 같은 조건에 나만 문제가 생겼을때 생깁니다. 여호수아가 이런 상황에 작은 것을 받은 것에 불평하지 말고 산지를 개척해서 믿음으로 나아가라고 격려합니다. 이 격려가 사실 크게 위로가 되지 않았을 것입니다. 이들의 불평을 잠재우기에 충분하지 않았을 것이고, 여전히 불공정한 상황은 바뀌지 않았을 것입니다. 그런데 이런 불편함을 관통하듯 여호수아는 불평보다는 믿음으로 현실을 돌파하라고 이야기합니다. 이런 격려가 현실적이지 않다는 것을 여호수가 몰랐을리 없습니다. 이 본문을 읽는 독자들에게도 여호수아의 이런격려가 과연 도움이 될것인가?라고 물으면 그렇지 않을것이라고 대답할것을 모르지 않았을 것입니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 왜 믿음으로 현실을 뚫고 새롭게 개척하라고 격려할까? 현실은 만들어진것을 마주하는 것이 아니라 약속의 성취는 곧 믿음으로 한걸음 내딛는 순간에 현실이 된다는 것을 여호수아가 경험했기때문입니다.

여러가지 약점을 가지고 우리는 멀리 타국에서 살고 있습니다. 하지만, 여기서 우리는 마땅한 공동체를 세워가며 믿음으로 주어진 장애물을 넘어서 현실을 마주하는데 주저하지 않는 삶을 살고 있습니다. 이 현실의 방향은 분명 우리들의 믿음의 방향과 일치할것입니다.

먼길 두아이를 붙들고 긴 비행을 하는 재훈 집사님의 현실을 응원하며 애나집사와 유가족들에게 깊은 위로의 마음을 전합니다.

내가 마주한 현실은 누군가의 끔과 비전일 수 있습니다.

17 Joshua said again to the tribes of Joseph—that is, to the tribe of Ephraim and to the western half-tribe of Manasseh—“You are a numerous people and possess great strength; therefore you shall not have only one allotment.18 The hill country shall also be yours. Even though it is forested, you shall clear it and possess it to its farthest limits. And even though the Canaanites have iron chariots and are strong, you will surely drive them out.”(Joshua 17:17–18)

The nature of allotment always raises the question of whether it has been handled fairly. As the land was divided, how could there not have been comparisons, complaints, or feelings of discrimination? Joshua surely did his best, yet it must have been a difficult and delicate process.

To reach any outcome, we must pass through a process—and that process is seldom smooth.Yesterday morning, Deacon Anna’s father, Elder Ji-Hwa Lee, was called home to God. Because Deacon Jaehun, Jenna, and Taeho needed to fly to Korea right away, I drove them to the airport at dawn. On the way, the children sensed the heaviness and the reality of the moment, saying little as we arrived. Jaehun shared that he hopes his children will not face such a moment too soon in their lives. Yet time moves, and the moments we dread eventually arrive.

Although Israel’s long-awaited hope of settling in Canaan had finally come true, the fulfillment of that hope surely required someone’s sacrifice and the painful navigation of difficult realities.

Yesterday on the radio, I heard news about a Korean American war veteran who fought in the Panama conflict, was wounded, and even received the Purple Heart—yet was later deported to Korea. He had suffered from PTSD and substance addiction, which eventually led to legal trouble. During a congressional hearing, a representative questioned the Secretary of Homeland Security and connected with the veteran via Zoom, confronting the harshness of ICE policies.

To live as immigrants means facing realities others may never encounter.Those who have loved ones in Korea worry whenever the phone rings late at night. Sometimes they must purchase expensive emergency tickets and fly across the ocean on short notice. When problems arise, they often must witness injustice or discrimination, unable to defend themselves fully.

Resentment begins when expectations are unmet, or when others in similar circumstances are treated differently. In this passage, Joshua tells the people: Do not complain about having received too little; take the hill country and move forward in faith.Such words probably did not feel comforting to them. They likely did not solve the sense of unfairness. The situation did not suddenly become just. And yet Joshua encourages them to break through reality not with complaints but with faith.

Joshua was not naïve; he knew well that this encouragement would not fully satisfy them—or even the readers of this text. So why does he still urge them to step forward in faith and expand into new territory?Because Joshua himself had experienced that the promises of God do not become real merely by seeing what already exists—God’s promises become reality the moment we step forward in faith.

We live in a foreign land carrying many disadvantages and vulnerabilities.And yet, here we continue to build a worthy community, overcoming the obstacles before us through faith and refusing to shrink back from the realities we face. The direction of our present reality will align with the direction of our faith.

We send our support to Deacon Jaehun as he travels a long distance with two young children, and we extend our deepest condolences and prayers to Deacon Anna and the entire family.

Reflection

The reality I face today may be the fulfillment of someone else’s hope and vision.

Though his parents shared the news calmly, please pray for a successful procedure and for Zion’s full and quick recovery.

• For Deacon Anna’s family: Ji-Hwa Lee, father of Deacon Anna and father-in-law of Deacon Jaehun Ryu, has been called to the Lord. Funeral services will begin this Saturday. Please pray that deep comfort and God’s nearness be with the grieving family.
