4 그러나 그 여인은 두 사람을 데려다가 숨겨 놓고, 이렇게 말하였다. “그 사람들이 저에게로 오기는 했습니다만, 그들이 어디서 왔는지 저는 알지 못합니다. 5그리고 그들은 날이 어두워 성문을 닫을 때쯤 떠났는데, 그들이 어디로 갔는지 저는 알지 못합니다. 빨리 사람을 풀어 그들을 뒤쫓게 하시면, 따라잡을 수도 있을 것입니다.” 6그러나 그 때는, 그 여인이 그들을 지붕으로 데리고 올라가, 자기네 지붕 위에 널어 놓은 삼대 속에 숨겨 놓은 뒤였다. (여호수아 2:4-6)

여호수아서는 출애굽한 이스라엘이 겪은 가나안 정복의 무용담으로 가득차있습니다.. 40년의 광야생활과 마침내 가나안땅을 들어가는데 첫번째 난관인 여리고성을 점령하는 이야기는 어릴적 교회학교때부터 자주듣는 상징적인 성경이야기중에 하나입니다.

어릴적에는 열두바퀴 돌고 성벽이 무너졌다는 것에 신기해하며 읽었지만, 점점 어른이 되면, 정탐꾼을 숨겨준 "여인", 기생 라합의 이야기에 관심이 가게되었습니다.

여리고는 지금은 팔레스타인 자치구에 들어있는 도시입니다. 이스라엘에 입국할때 "여리고"를 갈거다 그러면 세컨드리 체크에 걸려서 심한 심문을 받아야 하니 낭만적으로 성경의 도시를 간다는 것을 숨겨야 하는 여전히 이스라엘과 팔레스타인의 갈등의 중심에 있는 도시입니다.

여리고에는 예전 성지순례 전성기때 지어놓은 미국 호텔이 건재하며(유일하게 머물수 있는 호텔) 그 당시 화려한 호텔의 인테리어를 경험할 수 있습니다. 다만 현재 팔레스타인이 자체 운영하면서 여러가지로 뭔가 부족한것이 느껴지는 것을 보면 정치적 불안이 가져다주는 사이드 이펙트를 경험해볼 수 있습니다.

정탐꾼들을 숨겨준 "여인"에 관심이 더 가는 이유는 자기의 왕보다는 이방인에게 더 호감을 가지고 환대하며 숨겨준 용기를 보면 마땅히 질문이 생길수 밖에 없습니다. 무슨 이유로? 두려움이 아닌 조력으로 드러난 이 여인의 감정과 용기는 어디서 나온 것일까?

본문이 주는 힌트는 "너희들의 이야기를 들었다"에서 확인할 수 있지만, 들었다는 것으로 이 여인의 모든 결정이 순식간에 이해를 가져다 주지는 않습니다.

우리들이 하나님이 도우셨다!라는 고백은 전혀 뜻밖의 도움이나 이해를 경험할때 이야기합니다. 성경은 바로 이 "하나님이 도우셨다"라는 것이 어떻게 우리의 들의 삶에서 드러나는지를 보여줍니다.

지금까지 미국에 살면서 저에게도 이 여인들과 같은 용기를 가지고 맞이해준 분들이 계셨고, 저또한 이여인과 같은 역할을 했던적이 있는것 같으면서, 우리는 누군가의 이해할 수 없는 사랑과 환대를 통해 삶을 살아간다는 것을 경험합니다. 스스로 홀로 완벽해서 그런일이 벌어진것이 아니라 누군가의 용기와 이해할 수 없는 사랑과 연민들이 지금의 내 삶을 그리고 여러분들의 삶을 만들었다고 볼수 있습니다.

저는 이것을 "하나님이 우리를 도우시는 방법"이라고 고백하기를 원합니다. 얼굴도 모르는 분이 전화로 위로를 주었던 경험, 몇마디 대화를 나누지 않은 분들이 불쑥 건넨 위로들 나열할 수 없는 사랑과 은혜는 "하나님의 도우심"이었습니다.

이 한주간, "하나님의 도우심"이 발견하고 확인하고 기억하는 한주간이 되시기를 기도합니다.

묵상

그러면 나는 언제 누군가에게 뜻밖의 도움의 손길을 건넨적이 있나요? 하나님의 도움의 손길처럼 도구가 된 경험이 있으신가요?

1. 열린교회를 위해서 기도해주시고 우리들이 어떻게 교회를 세워가야 더욱 교회가 든든해지고 은혜를 나누고 하나님의 도움을 드러낼 수 있는지 이를 위해 기도해주세요.

2. 요즘 교회에 잘 보이지 않는 분들이 계시다면 연락한번 해보죠. 도움의 손길이 되셔서!

4 But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them. She said, “Yes, the men came to me, but I did not know where they had come from.5 And when it was time to close the gate at dark, the men went out; I do not know where they went. The Book of Joshua is filled with heroic stories of Israel’s conquest of Canaan after the Exodus.After forty years in the wilderness, Israel finally crosses into the Promised Land.Among those stories, the fall of Jericho—Israel’s first obstacle—is one of the most iconic tales we hear from childhood Sunday School.

As children, we are fascinated by the miracle of the walls collapsing after marching around the city twelve times.But as we grow older, our attention begins to shift—to the woman who hid the spies, Rahab the prostitute.

Jericho, today, is a city within the Palestinian Authority.If one says at the Israeli border, “I’m going to Jericho,” one will likely face a secondary inspection and intense questioning.Even now, Jericho remains a symbolic center of tension between Israel and Palestine.

There still stands an old American hotel in Jericho, built during the golden age of Christian pilgrimage—the only hotel where visitors can stay.Its once-splendid interior still tells stories of past prosperity,yet under Palestinian management today, it bears marks of neglect and political instability—a tangible reminder of how unrest affects even the smallest corners of daily life.

My interest in this woman, Rahab, continues to grow—because she chose to side with strangers rather than her own king.Her courage to hide and protect the foreign spies raises an unavoidable question:Why?What made her act not out of fear, but out of compassion and alliance?What was the source of her courage?

The text gives us a hint when Rahab later says, “We have heard of your God…”Yet hearing alone does not fully explain such a radical decision.

When we say, “God has helped me,” it often comes from those moments of unexpected grace—when help comes from the most unlikely places, through people we could not have anticipated.Scripture consistently shows us that this is how God helps us—through the courage, compassion, and faith of others.

Living in the U.S. over the years, I, too, have been helped by people who, like Rahab,welcomed me with unexpected kindness and courage.And sometimes, I have found myself in the position of offering that same kind of help to others.We live not because we are complete or self-sufficient,but because our lives are continually shaped by the love, courage, and compassion of others.That, I believe, is how God chooses to help us.

A comforting word from a stranger,an unexpected call that lifted your heart,a quiet act of generosity—these are not coincidences.They are the very fingerprints of God’s help in our lives.

When was the last time I reached out to someone with an unexpected act of kindness?Have I ever become a channel of God’s helping hand for another person?
