여리고성! 엘리아의 우물과 뒷편에는 여리고성 터(2023년 제가 직접 찍은사진입니다)

그들이 여호수아에게 말하였다. “주님께서 그 땅을 모두 우리 손에 넘겨 주셨으므로 그 땅의 모든 주민이 우리를 무서워하고 있습니다.”(여호수아 2:24)

수요일 성경공부가 이제 두주 남았습니다. 10주 과정인데 중간에 한국여정으로 좀 길게 느껴졌습니다. 매년 학기제로 운영하는 성경공부에 꾸준하게 참석하는 분들이 있습니다. 벌써 5년을 했으니 트리니티성경공부 교제를 다 통달한거죠. 하면서 느끼는 건 늘 새롭다는 것이고, 보람되다는 것입니다.

얼마전에 김영봉 목사님이 쓴 소그룹 교제가 도착했습니다. "영성생활"애 대한 내용은 딱 10권만 받아서. 정말 소그룹으로 10분만 선착순(?!)으로 받아서 주일 오후에 모여서 함께 나눠볼까? 고민중입니다.

최근 영성에 대한 관심이 높아지고 있습니다. 아무래도 신앙생활이 똑같은 패턴으로 이어지다보니 특별한 경험과 훈련에 대한 관심이 높아져서 그런것 같습니다. 그래서 내년 5월에 "영성일기" 훈련을 갖는 시간을 가져보려고 계획을 하고 있습니다. "어! 성경이 읽어지네"를 열심히하는 성도분들에게도 꽤 괜찮은 훈련이라는 생각이 든게, 전부 스마트폰이나 핸드폰 어플리케이션으로 활동하는, 아마 카카오톡과 비슷하게 활용할 수 있다는 생각에서 그렇습니다. 요즘 한국에서도 "어! 성경이 읽어지네"가 유행하듯 카톡으로 성경통독방을 묶어서 활발하게 운영된다고 하니까, 아마 이제 종이에 글을 쓰는게 아니라, 스마트폰을 활용하는 것에 익숙해진것 같습니다.

오늘은 제법 비가 힘있게 내립니다. 머리속에 교회 파티오에 물이 잘빠지기를 바라는 마음으로 서둘러 교회에 가보려고 합니다. 오후에는 세크라멘토에 교육이 있어서 다녀와야 하는데 빗길이라 서두르지 않고 천천히 다녀와야겠다는 생각을 하며 컴퓨터에 앉았습니다.

2023년에 이스라엘 성지순례를 갔을때 여리고를 간적이 있습니다. 더운 날씨 그늘을 찾아서 "엘리사의 우물"앞에서 여리고 성을 발굴하는 장면을 지켜보았던 기억이 있습니다. 서방의 활발한 발굴 후원이 끊어지고 마치 공사판처럼 방치된 것을 보면서, 안타깝다는 생각과 함께 전세계에서 그거라도 보려고 그늘과 의자를 찾아 비집고 앉아있는 분들 그리고 가이드의 설명을 듣는 장면을 보면서 그럼에도 불구하고 의미를 찾아 노력하는 모습에 깊은 인상이 남았습니다. 이스라엘 입국할때 절대로 가지 않겠다고 이야기한 그곳에서 우리들은 여리고성의 생생한 기억들을 되새기며, 오늘 본문과 마주합니다.

하나님에 대한 소식, 출애굽한 이스라엘 백성들에 대한 소식이 여리고성에까지 전해졌으니 많은 사람들이 두려워하였다는 기생라합의 고백은 두려움은 듣는 것으로 충분하고 믿음도 듣는 것으로 충분하다는 생각이 들었습니다.

우리는 날마다 듣기 위해 노력합니다. 이 노력의 결실은 "그리스도인"으로 세상을 살아가는 것으로 늘 기쁨과 은혜로 충만하기를 부탁드립니다. 어떻게 듣고 어떻게 실천하냐에 따라 우리는 그렇게 살아질 것입니다.

Our Wednesday Bible Study now has just two weeks left. Although it’s a 10-week course, it felt a bit longer this time because of my trip to Korea in the middle. Still, there are faithful participants who join our Trinity Bible Study every semester. It has already been five years—many of them have practically mastered the entire curriculum. Yet what continues to amaze me is how Scripture is always fresh, always new, and always rewarding.

Recently, a small-group devotional guide written by Rev. Young-Bong Kim arrived. It deals with “spiritual life,” and since I received only ten copies, I am considering gathering a small group of ten people—first come, first served—on Sunday afternoons to share and reflect together.

In recent days, I have sensed a growing interest in spirituality within our congregation. Perhaps it is because our faith routines often fall into familiar patterns, and people naturally long for deeper practices and transformative experiences. This is one of the reasons I am planning to introduce a “Spiritual Journal (영성일기)” training next May. I believe this will also be meaningful for those diligently participating in the “Oh! I Can Finally Read the Bible” reading program. Since it is done through a mobile app—similar in style to how Koreans now form Scripture-reading groups via KakaoTalk—it fits very well with the way people engage digitally today.

This morning the rain is coming down strongly. I find myself hoping that the church patio drains well, so I plan to stop by shortly to check. This afternoon I will attend a training in Sacramento, and because of the rainy roads, I intend to travel slowly and safely.

When we went on our pilgrimage to Israel in 2023, we had a chance to visit Jericho. I still remember seeking shade from the heat and sitting near the “Spring of Elisha,” watching the excavation of the ancient Jericho site. As Western funding stalled, the area looked like an abandoned construction site, which was unfortunate. Yet even in those conditions, people from all over the world squeezed into whatever shade and seats were available, listening intently to the guide’s explanation—trying to find meaning despite the surroundings. It left a deep impression on me.

Although we had been told during immigration not to visit certain areas, we still found ourselves standing right there, recalling the living history of Jericho as we read today’s passage.

The confession of Rahab—that the news about the God of Israel had spread to Jericho and caused fear among its people—reminded me that fear can arise simply by hearing, and likewise, faith also comes by hearing.

We, too, strive every day to listen. May the fruit of that listening be revealed in the way we live as Christians—in joy, in grace, and in obedience. How we listen and how we practice what we hear will shape the lives we live.
