천사가 그들에게 말하였다. “두려워하지 말아라. 나는 온 백성에게 큰 기쁨이 될 소식을 너희에게 전하여 준다. 11오늘 다윗의 동네에서 너희에게 구주가 나셨으니, 그는 곧 그리스도 주님이시다. (눅 2:10-11)

성탄절을 시작으로 년말까지 거의 연락을 주고 받지 않던 분들의 안부 연락이 옵니다. Merry Christmas부터 "새해복많이 받으라"는 인사는 연락이 뜸했던 관계를 잠시 반짝 안부를 물을 수 있는 기회가 됩니다. 이시간은 아무래도 한해를 잘 돌아보고 잊혀진 분들을 찾아 마음을 나누기 위해 선물로 주어진 시간처럼 민망함도 어색함도 없이 인사를 보낼 수 있습니다.

지난주 예배를 마치고 청년하나가 믿지 않는 친구들이 "기독교가 궁금한데 절대적 진리라면 틀림이 없어야 하는데 이 절대적 진리를 어떻게 증명"할 수 있을까? 라는 질문을 해왔습니다. 아마 제가 기억의 왜곡이 좀 있을텐데 이런 비슷한 질문이었던것 같습니다. 기독교신앙은 일점일획 틀림없는 진리를 주장하는 종교가 아니라, "하나님이 우리를 사랑하신다"라는 진리를 통해 우리가 자유해지는 신앙고백을 이어가는 신앙공동체입니다. 어려운것 같지만, 기독교의 절대적 진리를 한문장으로 이야기하면 "하나님은 사랑이시다"라는 문장이고 이 문장으로 우리는 이 사랑으로 말미암아 하나님의 구원에 이를수 있다는 자유함이 보장되는 것이 신앙고백의 진리라는 것입니다

꽤 거창한 답이 나올것 같지만, 이 간단한 문장은 "진리가 너희를 자유케하리라"라고 선언한 요한의 고백을 기억하면, 분명하게 이해할 수 있습니다.

그러면 이 진리는 무엇일까? 당시에 종교의 방향은 구별과 차별 그리고 율법에 따른 구원의 선별이 사람들을 괴롭혔습니다. 아무리 노력해도 구원받을 수 없다는 율법주의자, 바리새인들의 단단한 종교적 도그마는 사람들이 하나님으로 부터 버림받았다는 인식을 크게 만들었습니다. 여기에 로마의 통치는 이런 막막함에 더 큰 절망으로 몰아넣었습니다.

오늘 읽은 누가복음은 이런 척박한 땅에 기적같이 "기쁜소식"이 전해졌습니다. 그것도 당시에 가장 신뢰하기 힘든 목자들, 주인의 양을 대신 쳐주면서 그 양을 이런저런 이유로 착복했던, 이런 이유로 당시 사회적으로 신뢰도가 바닥이었던 목자들에게 천사들이 나타나 마리아와 요한에게 전할 기쁜소식을 전하고 있습니다.

누가복음은 여기서 하나님의 특별한 "일하는 방식" 또는 역설적인 하나님의 유머와 같은 상황을 들어내 보입니다. 세상 모두가 하나님의 진리는 가장 빛나는 자를 통해 또는 가장 흠결없는 자들을 통해 전해질것이라고 예상했지만, 하나님은 모두의 생각을 뒤짚는 반전 모양으로 목자에게 이 소식을 전합니다. 그리고 하나님의 계획을 마리아와 요한이라는 갈릴리의 작은 동네, 누구도 기대하지 않는 그 자리에서 시작합니다.

이것으로도 우리들은 성탄의 기쁨이 어디서 부터 시작되는지를 알려줍니다. 크고 화려한곳이 아니라 작고 보잘것 없는 아무기대가 없는 자리에서 성탄의 기쁨이 시작됩니다. 그래야 누구도 소외될수 없는 하나님의 사랑이 전해집니다.

내일, 크리스마스 이브에 저희는 처음으로 성탄절 이브 예배를 가지려고 합니다. 성탄절을 그냥 보내지 않고 우리들 나름대로 최고의 시간, 가장 의미있고 기억해내는 시간을 가지려고 합니다. 이 기쁜소식을 함께 나누고 하늘에는 영광 땅에는 평화!라는 하나님의 원대한 꿈을 기억하는 시간을 갖기를 바랍니다. 진리는 우리를 얽메이지 않고 자유롭게 했음을 기억해야합니다.

“Do not be afraid; for see—I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people:to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord.”(Luke 2:10–11)

Beginning with Christmas and continuing through the end of the year, we often hear from people we have not been in touch with for quite some time. Greetings like “Merry Christmas” or “Happy New Year” become small openings—moments when relationships that had grown quiet can briefly reconnect.This season feels like a gift of time, allowing us to look back on the year, to remember those we may have forgotten, and to share our hearts without awkwardness or hesitation.

After last Sunday’s worship, a young adult shared a question that had come from some non-Christian friends:“We’re curious about Christianity, but if it claims to be an absolute truth, shouldn’t it be completely error-free? How can such absolute truth be proven?”I may not be recalling the question perfectly, but it was something along those lines.

Christian faith is not a religion that insists on an infallible truth measured down to every stroke and letter. Rather, it is a faith community that lives out a confession of freedom rooted in one truth: that God loves us.As challenging as it may sound, the absolute truth of Christianity can be expressed in a single sentence: “God is love.”It is through this love that we are assured freedom—the freedom that leads us into God’s salvation. That freedom itself is the truth we confess.

This may sound like a grand answer, but when we remember John’s declaration, “You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free,” its meaning becomes clear.

So then, what is this truth?In Jesus’ time, religion was marked by separation and discrimination, by salvation filtered through the strict observance of the law. The rigid religious dogma of legalists and Pharisees—who insisted that no matter how hard one tried, salvation was ultimately out of reach—left many people believing they had been abandoned by God.Roman rule only deepened this despair, pressing people further into hopelessness.

Into this barren landscape, the Gospel of Luke tells us, a miracle took place: good news was proclaimed.And remarkably, it was proclaimed first not to the powerful or the credible, but to shepherds—the very people considered untrustworthy in that society. Shepherds were often accused of taking advantage of the sheep entrusted to them, and for this reason their social credibility was at the very bottom. Yet it was to these shepherds that angels appeared, delivering the good news that would soon be told to Mary and Joseph.

Here Luke reveals something profound about God’s way of working—a kind of divine paradox, even a holy humor.Everyone might have expected God’s truth to be revealed through the most radiant, the most flawless, the most respected. But God overturns every expectation, choosing instead to entrust the message to shepherds.God’s plan begins not in places of power, but in Mary and Joseph, in a small town in Galilee—an ordinary place where no one was looking for anything extraordinary.

Through this, we learn where the joy of Christmas truly begins.It does not begin in grand or dazzling places, but in small, humble, overlooked spaces—places where no one expects anything at all.Only then can God’s love reach everyone, leaving no one excluded.

Tomorrow, on Christmas Eve, we will hold our very first Christmas Eve service.Rather than letting Christmas simply pass by, we hope to create what is, for us, the best kind of time—a meaningful, memorable moment. We long to share this good news together and to remember God’s great dream proclaimed by the angels:“Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace.”We must remember that truth does not bind us—it sets us free.
