보아라, 동정녀가 잉태하여 아들을 낳을 것이니, 그의 이름을 임마누엘이라고 할 것이다” 하신 말씀을 이루려고 하신 것이다. (임마누엘은 번역하면 ‘하나님이 우리와 함께 계시다’는 뜻이다.) (마태복음 1:23)

주현절은 하나님께서 숨어 계시지 않고, 이 세상 한가운데 자신을 드러내시는 절기입니다. 그러나 그 드러남은 언제나 우리가 기대한 방식이 아니라, 가장 조용하고 이해하기 어려운 모습으로 다가옵니다. 마태복음 1장은 그 사실을 요셉의 이야기로 보여줍니다. 요셉에게 마리아의 임신은 축복이 아니라 혼란이었고, 하나님의 계획은 위로가 아니라 갈등으로 먼저 찾아왔습니다. 그는 믿음의 사람이라 불렸지만, 처음부터 모든 것을 이해한 사람은 아니었습니다.

요셉은 율법적으로 옳은 선택을 할 수도 있었지만, 그는 사람을 살리는 방향을 선택합니다. 마리아를 공개적으로 드러내지 않고 조용히 물러나려는 그의 결정 속에는, 아직 설명되지 않은 상황 속에서도 누군가를 보호하려는 마음이 담겨 있었습니다. 하나님은 바로 그 지점에서 요셉에게 말씀하십니다. “두려워하지 말라.” 하나님의 계시는 문제를 즉시 해결해 주기보다, 두려움 속에 있는 한 사람을 향한 부르심으로 시작됩니다.

천사는 아이의 이름을 예수라 하라고 말합니다. 그 이름은 ‘자기 백성을 죄에서 구원할 자’라는 사명을 담고 있습니다. 그리고 이 모든 일은 “임마누엘”, 곧 하나님이 우리와 함께 계시다는 약속을 이루기 위함이었습니다. 주현절의 빛은 화려한 증명으로 오지 않습니다. 그 빛은 요셉처럼 말없이 순종하는 삶을 통해, 세상에 조용히 비춰집니다.

요셉은 설명을 요구하지 않았고, 조건을 달지 않았습니다. 그는 일어나 주님의 말씀대로 행했습니다. 그 순종을 통해 하나님의 구원은 역사 속으로 들어왔습니다. 오늘 우리의 신앙도 마찬가지입니다. 하나님은 우리가 모든 것을 이해한 후 움직이기를 기다리시지 않습니다. 오히려 이해되지 않는 자리에서, 한 걸음을 내딛는 믿음을 통해 자신을 드러내십니다.

“Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel,”which means, “God is with us.”(Matthew 1:23)

Epiphany is the season in which God chooses not to remain hidden, but reveals Godself in the very midst of the world. Yet this revelation does not come in the way we expect. It comes quietly, gently, and often in ways that are difficult to understand. Matthew chapter 1 shows us this truth through the story of Joseph. For Joseph, Mary’s pregnancy did not feel like a blessing but like confusion. God’s plan arrived not first as comfort, but as inner conflict. Though Joseph is called a righteous man, he was not someone who understood everything from the beginning.

Joseph could have chosen what was legally correct according to the law. Instead, he chose a path that protected life. His decision to quietly withdraw, rather than expose Mary publicly, reveals a heart that sought to shield another even when the situation could not yet be explained. It is precisely at this moment that God speaks to Joseph: “Do not be afraid.” God’s revelation does not begin by immediately solving the problem, but by calling a fearful person by name.

The angel tells Joseph to name the child Jesus—a name that carries a mission: “He will save his people from their sins.” All of this happens so that the promise of “Emmanuel,” God with us, might be fulfilled. The light of Epiphany does not arrive with dramatic proof or spectacle. It shines quietly through lives of silent obedience, like that of Joseph, illuminating the world in unexpected ways.

Joseph does not ask for explanations, nor does he place conditions on his obedience. He rises and does exactly as the Lord commands him. Through that simple act of obedience, God’s salvation enters human history. Our faith today is no different. God does not wait for us to understand everything before we move. Instead, God reveals Godself through faith that dares to take one step forward, even when the way ahead is not yet clear.

1. Please pray for the Oakland building, as potential buyers continue to visit. We earnestly ask for prayers that the sale of the building may move forward within the month of January.

2. Please also pray for the ministries of Yeolin Church in 2026, and for the Men’s Fellowship and Women’s Fellowship, that they may be strengthened and guided by God’s grace.
