그 때에 예수께서는 제자들에게 말씀하셨다. “누구든지 나를 따라오려거든, 자기를 부인하고, 제 십자가를 지고, 나를 따라 오너라. (마 16:24)

우리는 보통 자신을 지키고, 자신의 뜻을 이루는 삶을 자연스럽게 생각합니다. 세상은 끊임없이 우리에게 말합니다. “너 자신을 위해 살아라. 네 꿈을 이루어라.” 그러나 예수님의 제자도는 전혀 다른 방향을 가리킵니다. 예수님은 “자기를 부인하라”고 말씀하십니다.

자기를 부인한다는 것은 자신을 미워하거나 무시하라는 뜻이 아닙니다. 그것은 삶의 중심이 더 이상 나 자신이 아니라 그리스도가 되는 것을 의미합니다. 내가 중심에 있을 때 우리는 계산하고, 손익을 따지고, 안전을 먼저 생각합니다. 하지만 예수님을 따르는 길은 때로는 이해할 수 없는 길, 손해처럼 보이는 길, 심지어 십자가의 길일 수도 있습니다.

예수님은 이어서 말씀하십니다.“누구든지 나를 따라오려거든, 자기를 부인하고, 제 십자가를 지고, 나를 따라 오너라.” (마 16:25)

이 말씀은 역설처럼 들립니다. 그러나 신앙의 삶을 오래 걸어본 사람들은 이 진리를 조금씩 깨닫게 됩니다. 자신을 붙들고 살수록 삶은 좁아지고, 주님께 맡길수록 삶은 넓어집니다. 움켜쥘수록 잃고, 내려놓을수록 얻습니다.

십자가는 단순히 고난의 상징이 아니라 하나님 나라를 향한 길의 방향입니다. 예수님이 가신 길이 바로 그 길이었기 때문입니다. 제자도는 결국 예수님의 길을 함께 걷는 것입니다.

오늘 아침 우리는 다시 질문하게 됩니다.나는 누구를 위해 살고 있는가?나는 무엇을 붙들고 있는가?그리고 나는 어떤 십자가를 지고 주님을 따르고 있는가?

주님을 따르는 길은 쉬운 길은 아닙니다. 그러나 그 길은 생명으로 이어지는 길이며, 하나님의 영광을 보게 되는 길입니다. 오늘 하루도 그 길을 조용히, 그러나 담대하게 걸어가기를 소망합니다.

묵상

나 중심에서 하나님 중심으로 산다는 건 문장과 말로하는 게 아니라 삶으로 드러나져야합니다.

Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” (Matthew 16:24)

We usually think it is natural to protect ourselves and pursue our own desires. The world constantly tells us, “Live for yourself. Follow your dreams.” Yet the discipleship of Jesus points in a completely different direction. Jesus says, “Deny yourself.”

Denying oneself does not mean hating or ignoring oneself. Rather, it means that the center of life is no longer ourselves, but Christ. When we are at the center, we tend to calculate everything—measuring profit and loss, and prioritizing our own safety. But the path of following Jesus can sometimes be a path we do not fully understand, a path that may look like loss, even a path that resembles the cross.

Jesus continues to say,“For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.” (Matthew 16:25)

These words may sound like a paradox. Yet those who have walked the life of faith for a long time begin to understand this truth little by little. The more tightly we hold onto our lives, the narrower they become; the more we entrust them to the Lord, the wider they become. The more we grasp, the more we lose; the more we let go, the more we gain.

The cross is not simply a symbol of suffering. It is the direction of the path that leads to the Kingdom of God, because that was the very path Jesus walked. In the end, discipleship means walking the path of Jesus together with Him.

This morning we are invited to ask ourselves again:Who am I living for?What am I holding onto?And what cross am I carrying as I follow the Lord?

The path of following the Lord is not an easy one. But it is the path that leads to life and the path on which we will see the glory of God. Today, may we walk that path quietly, yet courageously.

Meditation

Living a life that moves from being self-centered to God-centered cannot remain only in words or statements.It must be revealed through the way we live.
