그들은 그 별을 보고, 무척이나 크게 기뻐하였다. (마 2:10)

마태복음 2장 1절부터 12절은 예수님의 탄생 이야기 가운데서도 매우 독특한 장면을 전합니다. 이 본문에는 목자도, 천사도 등장하지 않습니다. 대신 동방에서 온 박사들, 낯선 이방의 지혜자들이 등장합니다. 그들은 성경을 가장 잘 알고 있던 사람들이 아니었고, 예루살렘 성전 가까이에 있던 사람들도 아니었습니다. 평생 별을 보며 점을 쳤던 점성술가 또는 하늘의 별 움직을 보고는 농사나 계절을 알려주는 당시의 천문학자들이었습니다.

이 본문에서 가장 인상적인 장면은 박사들이 별을 다시 보았을 때의 반응입니다. 성경은 그들이 “매우 크게 기뻐하고 기뻐했다”고 전합니다. 마치 잃어버린 방향을 마침내 찾아낸 것처럼, 어디로 가야할지 방황하다 가야할길을 발견한 것처럼 이들을 기뻐했습니다. 길을 잃은 듯했던 순간을 지나, 하나님이 주신 표징이 다시 분명해졌을 때 터져 나온 환희입니다. 신앙은 종종 이와 같습니다. 확신보다 질문이 앞설 때도 있고, 분명하던 별이 잠시 보이지 않을 때도 있습니다.

이야기의 또 다른 중심에는 헤롯이 있습니다. 그는 “유대인의 왕으로 나신 이”에 대한 소식을 듣고 불안해합니다. 왕궁에 있었던 헤롯은 두려워했고, 먼 길을 걸어온 박사들은 기뻐했습니다. 이 대조는 마태복음 2장이 전하는 중요한 메시지입니다. 예수님은 힘으로 세상에 군림한자에게는 두려움이었고, 세상의 무게에 무너져가는 자들에게는 소망이었습니다.

박사들은 아기 예수를 만나 엎드려 경배하고, 황금과 유향과 몰약을 드립니다. 이 선물들은 단순한 예물이 아니라, 자신들이 이해한 방식으로 드리는 신앙의 고백입니다. 그들은 유대인이 아니었고, 완전한 이해를 가진 사람들도 아니었습니다. 그러나 그들은 자신이 가진 최선의 언어로, 최선의 방식으로 예수께 반응했습니다. 하나님은 그들의 정확성보다 그들의 방향과 진심을 우리들에게 드러내 보입니다. 어떤 형식보다 방향이 더 중요합니다.

그리고 본문은 이렇게 끝납니다. “그들이 꿈에 헤롯에게로 돌아가지 말라 지시하심을 받아 다른 길로 고국에 돌아가니라.” 예수를 만난 사람은 이전과 같은 길로 돌아갈 수 없습니다. 경배는 언제나 삶의 방향을 바꾸어 놓습니다. 다른 길로 돌아간다는 것은 단지 동선의 변화가 아니라, 삶의 기준과 충성의 방향이 달라졌다는 선언입니다.

마태복음 2장은 우리에게 묻습니다.지금 우리는 별을 보고 있는가, 아니면 왕궁의 안전 속에 머물러 있는가.불안해하는 헤롯의 자리에 서 있는가, 아니면 기꺼이 길을 떠난 박사들의 자리에 서 있는가.

예수님은 여전히 우리를 향해 말씀하십니다.“별을 따라오라. 그리고 나를 만나면, 다른 길로 돌아가라.”

완연한 봄날씨를 보이고 있습니다. 춥다고 움추렸던 몸이 봄기운에 꽃은 피고 발빠른 분들은 땅을 뒤짚고 있습니다. 생각보다 빠르게 계절은 바뀌고 우리도 그에 맞춰서 삶을 세워야겠습니다.

묵상 편안함을 지켜 주는 자리에 머물르는데 익숙한가요? 아니면 확실하지 않아도 하나님의 부르심을 따라 한 걸음 내딛는 자리에 서 있는가요?

2. 오클랜드교회 빌딩에 소송을 제기했던 그룹이 또 다시 새로운 브로커에게 컨텍을 했어요. 어제 변호사와 감리사님과 이야기를 나누었는데 우리들이 생각했던것보다 이들은 집요하게 우리를 괴롭힐 가능성이 있다고 합니다. 이들의 집요함 보다 우리들의 간절한 기도가 필요할 때입니다. 토요일 새벽 6시, 새벽기도에 간절히 기도하는 새벽기도 모임을 가져야겠습니다. 마음을 다잡고 함께 기도했으면 좋겠습니다.

“When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy.”(Matthew 2:10)

Matthew 2:1–12 presents one of the most distinctive scenes in the story of Jesus’ birth. In this passage, there are no shepherds and no angels. Instead, we encounter the Magi from the East—foreign and unfamiliar wise men. They were not those who knew the Scriptures best, nor were they people who lived near the temple in Jerusalem. They were likely astrologers who studied the stars throughout their lives, or early astronomers who observed the movement of the heavens to determine seasons and agricultural rhythms.

One of the most striking moments in this passage is the reaction of the Magi when they see the star again. Scripture tells us that they “rejoiced exceedingly with great joy.” It is as if they had finally rediscovered their direction—like travelers who had wandered for some time and at last found the road they were meant to take. Their joy bursts forth at the moment when God’s sign becomes clear again. Faith is often like this. There are times when questions come before certainty, and moments when the star that once guided us seems to disappear for a while.

Another central figure in the story is Herod. When he hears about “the one who has been born king of the Jews,” he becomes deeply disturbed. Herod, who remained in the palace, was afraid, while the Magi, who traveled a long and uncertain road, were filled with joy. This contrast conveys a key message of Matthew 2. Jesus was a threat to those who ruled the world through power, but a source of hope to those who were weary under the weight of the world.

When the Magi meet the child Jesus, they fall down and worship him, offering gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. These gifts are more than simple offerings; they are confessions of faith expressed in the only way the Magi knew how. They were not Jews, nor did they possess complete understanding. Yet they responded to Jesus with the best language they had and in the best way they knew. God reveals to us that what mattered was not their precision, but their direction and sincerity. More than any form or ritual, direction truly matters.

The passage ends with these words: “And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road.” Those who encounter Jesus cannot return by the same path they once traveled. Worship always changes the direction of our lives. Taking another road is not merely a change of route; it is a declaration that one’s standards, loyalties, and way of life have been transformed.

Matthew 2 asks us a searching question.Are we looking to the star, or are we remaining within the safety of the palace?Are we standing in the place of Herod, filled with fear, or in the place of the Magi, willing to set out on the journey?

Jesus still speaks to us today:“Follow the star. And when you meet me, return by another way.”

We are beginning to feel the fullness of spring. Bodies that once shrank back from the cold are now awakened by warmer air. Flowers bloom, and those quick to respond are already turning over the soil. The seasons are changing faster than we expect, and we too must shape our lives accordingly.

Are we accustomed to remaining in places that protect our comfort,or are we willing—even without certainty—to take one step forward in response to God’s calling?

2. The group that previously filed a lawsuit against the Oakland church building has once again contacted a new broker. Yesterday, after speaking with our attorney and the district superintendent, we learned that they may be more persistent and harassing than we initially anticipated. At a time like this, we need earnest prayer more than ever. This Saturday at 6 a.m., we will gather for early morning prayer. Let us steady our hearts and come together in sincere and united prayer.
