"너희 중에 누구든지 크고자 하는 자는 너희를 섬기는 자가 되고" (마 20:26, 새번역)

예수님이 예루살렘으로 올라가는 길입니다. 제자들을 따로 불러서 앞으로 일어날 일을 말씀하십니다. 잡히고, 넘겨지고, 조롱받고, 채찍질당하고, 십자가에 못 박히고, 사흘 만에 살아날 것이다. 사후예언의 내용입니다. 복음서는 이미 예수님의 십자가 사건 이후에 기록되었습니다. 기억을 더듬어 복음서를 기록하면서, 마태복음은 예수님께 일어날 일을 미리 예언하신 것을 교회에 알리고 있습니다. 우리는 이미 일어난 일을 알고 있고, 그럼에도 불구하고 여전히 예수를 믿는 공동체다.

이어지는 다음 장면은 좀 당황스럽게 읽혀집니다. 세베대의 아들들의 어머니가 예수님 앞에 무릎을 꿇습니다. 부탁이 있다고 합니다. "내 두 아들을 주의 나라에서 하나는 주의 우편에, 하나는 주의 좌편에 앉게 해 주십시오." 예수님이 죽겠다고 방금 말씀하셨는데, 그 자리에서 자기 아들들 자리 챙기는 어머니. 당혹스럽지만, 사실 이게 우리들의 민낯인것 같습니다. 듣고 싶은 것만 듣고, 챙기고 싶은 것만 챙기는것.

예수님이 야고보와 요한에게 묻습니다. "너희가 내가 마시려는 잔을 마실 수 있느냐?" 두 사람은 자신있게 대답합니다. "할 수 있습니다." 틀린 말은 아닙니다. 두 사람 다 나중에 실제로 그 잔을 마십니다. 야고보는 순교했고, 요한은 평생 고난 속에 살았습니다. 그런데 지금 이 순간, 이 대답은 너무 빠릅니다. 무슨 잔인지도 모르면서 할 수 있다고 합니다.

나머지 열 제자가 이 소식을 듣고 화를 냅니다. 왜 화가 났을까요. 억울해서일 겁니다. 나도 그 생각을 하고 있었는데, 쟤들이 먼저 선수를 쳤으니까. 예수님 주변에 자리를 차지하려는 경쟁이 벌어지고 있습니다. 죽음을 향해 걸어가는 예수님 곁에서 제자들은 누가 앞서 갈지에 관심을 갖습니다. 사람 사는 모양은 다 똑같은 것 같습니다.

요즘 파송시즌이라 한주 지날때마다 새로 파송되는 목사들의 사진과 함께 안내 이메일이 옵니다. 아는 목사님이 새로 파송받으시면 문자로 또는 전화로 새롭게 시작하는 여정을 위해 기도한다는 인사를 나눕니다. 대부분은 새로가는 사역에 기대가 큰것으로 느껴지는데 어떤경우는 실망감을 감추치 못하는 분들이 있습니다. 아마, 좋은 파송과 나쁜 파송이 있는것 같습니다. 지금 보다 더 좋은 교회에 파송받는 것을 좋은 파송이라고 이야기할테고, 좋은 교회라는 것은 좀더 크거나 영향력 있는 교회라는 의미일것입니다. 제자들이나 지금의 목사들이나 그 마음의 속내는 바뀌지 않은것 같습니다.

스스로에게도 물어보면, 처음 신학교에서 불렀던 "아골 골짝 빈들에도 어디든지 가오리다"라는 고백이 이제는 두렵게 느껴집니다. 저 또한 이런 속내에서 자유롭지 않다는 것에 마음이 무겁게 하루를 시작합니다.

예수님은 이런 제자들의 속내를 향해 이렇게 말씀하십니다. "너희도 알다시피, 이방인의 통치자들은 백성들을 지배하고, 고관들은 백성들에게 권력을 행사한다. 그러나 너희는 그래서는 안 된다." 세상의 방식이 있고, 제자의 방식이 따로 있다는 것입니다. 세상은 위로 올라가는 것을 성공이라고 부릅니다. 예수님은 반대로 아래로 내려가는 것이 우리들이 바라봐야할 방향이라고 이야기하십니다.

"인자가 온 것은 섬김을 받으려 함이 아니라 섬기려 하고 자기 목숨을 많은 사람의 대속물로 주려 함이니라." 이 말씀이 묵직하게 남습니다. 예수님은 자리를 차지하러 예루살렘에 가시는 것이 아닙니다. 자리를 내어주러 가시는 것입니다. 그것도 목숨을 내어주고 죽기까지 사랑하시는 하나님의 은혜를 드러내기 위해 스스로를 희생하는 자리로 가고 계십니다.

요즘 크고 강한 것이 이기는 것처럼 보이는 시절에 살고 있습니다. 힘 있는 자가 자리를 차지하고, 목소리 큰 사람이 방향을 정하는 것 같고, 물질이 많아야 태평성대가 올것 같은 그런 시기에 우리들의 삶이 살아지고 있습니다.

우리들이 오늘 기억해야할 것은 예수님은 그 반대 방향으로 걸어가셨다는 것입니다. 낮아질대로 낮아지시고, 십자가에 죽기까지 하셨습니다. 그리고 그 길이 결국 부활로 이어졌습니다. 역사에서 가장 큰 반전은 가장 낮은 자리에서 시작되었습니다.

결국 우리들이 무너지는 것은 올라갈때까지 올라가고 싶은 욕망이 만족스러운 현실에서 무너지는 것입니다. 큰 반전, 예수님의 방향을 따라 가는 그 길위 있음을 기억하시는 하루가 되시기를 바랍니다.

섬기러 오신 분이 가장 높아지셨습니다. 그것이 하나님 나라의 방식입니다.

"Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant." (Matthew 20:26)

Jesus is on his way up to Jerusalem. He pulls the disciples aside and tells them what is coming. He will be handed over, mocked, flogged, crucified — and on the third day, rise again. Matthew's Gospel was written after all of this had already happened. The early church was looking back, putting the pieces together, and saying to one another: we knew this was coming. We know how the story ends. And we still believe.

What comes right after is a little jarring. The mother of Zebedee's sons kneels before Jesus with a request: "Grant that one of these two sons of mine may sit at your right and the other at your left in your kingdom." Jesus has just described his own death — and here is a mother, in that same moment, securing her sons' positions. It's uncomfortable to read. But honestly, it might be the most accurate picture of us that the Gospels give. We hear what we want to hear. We reach for what we want to reach for.

Jesus asks James and John: Can you drink the cup I am going to drink? They answer without hesitation. We can. And they weren't entirely wrong — both of them did eventually drink it. James was martyred. John lived a long life of suffering. But in this moment, the answer comes too fast. They say yes before they even know what they're saying yes to.

When the other ten hear about it, they're indignant. Why? Probably because they'd been thinking the same thing and got beaten to it. There's a quiet competition happening for the best seat near Jesus — while Jesus is walking toward his death. People are people, in every age.

It's pastor appointment season right now, and every week another email comes with photos of newly assigned ministers. When someone I know gets a new appointment, I send a message or make a call — congratulations, praying for your new chapter. Most of them seem genuinely excited. But some can't quite hide the disappointment. There seem to be good appointments and not-so-good ones. A good appointment, it seems, means a bigger church, a more prominent one. The disciples and today's pastors — the heart doesn't seem to have changed much.

If I'm honest with myself, the hymn I used to sing in seminary — wherever you lead me, Lord, I will go — feels a little frightening now. I'm not as free from this as I'd like to be. That's the weight I'm carrying as this day begins.

Jesus speaks directly into all of this. You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. There is the world's way, and there is the disciple's way. The world calls upward movement success. Jesus points in the opposite direction.

The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. That line sits heavy. Jesus is not going to Jerusalem to take a seat. He is going to give his up. To give his very life — to make a way for the love of God to be known, all the way to the end.

We are living in a time when big and loud and powerful seem to be winning. The ones with leverage take the seats. The ones with the largest voice set the direction. It can feel like abundance is the only path to peace. And yet what we are called to remember today is that Jesus walked the other way entirely. He went lower than anyone. He died on a cross. And that road led to resurrection. The greatest reversal in history began in the lowest place.

What brings us down in the end is not failure — it's the hunger to keep rising, meeting the ceiling of a comfortable life and finding it was never enough. Remember today whose direction you're walking in.

Reflection

The one who came to serve became the highest of all. That is how God's kingdom works.
