“그러므로 너희는 무엇이든지, 남에게 대접을 받고자 하는 대로, 너희도 남을 대접하여라. 이것이 율법과 예언서의 본뜻이다.” (마 7:12)

사람을 만나고 관계를 할때 수많은 선입관들이 작동을 하는 경우를 경험합니다. 직접 만나보지 않고 또는 경험하지 않은 상황에서 이런 저런 소문들은 사람보다 먼저 우리의 안에 자리할때가 있죠. 개인적으로 늘 이런 부분을 경계하지만 그럼에도 늘 이런 비슷한 경험을 할때마다 경계하고 조심해야겠다는 생각을 합니다.

오늘 예수님은 우리에게 아주 분명하면서도 어려운 말씀을 하십니다. “비판하지 말라.” 우리는 너무 쉽게 사람을 판단합니다. 말 한마디, 행동 하나를 보고 그 사람 전체를 규정해 버립니다. 그런데 예수님은 묻습니다. “왜 형제의 눈 속에 있는 티는 보면서, 네 눈 속에 있는 들보는 깨닫지 못하느냐?” 간단히 말하면 자기 객관화를 왜 하지 못할까?라는 물음입니다.

아침에 이 말씀 앞에 서면, 하루를 어떤 마음으로 시작해야 할지가 분명해집니다. 판단이 관계의 기본이 아니라 함께하는 은혜를 우선으로 삶을 세워가는 것이 우리들에게 주어진 특별함이라는 생각이 들었습니다.

예수님은 또 말씀하십니다. “구하라, 그러면 받을 것이요. 찾으라, 그러면 찾을 것이요. 문을 두드리라, 그러면 열릴 것이다.” 하나님은 냉정한 재판장이 아니라 자녀에게 좋은 것을 주시는 아버지이십니다. 이 구절은 개인적인 청원 또는 간절한 기도로 성취해야할 동기를 주는 것 같지만, 우리가 서로 심판하는 자리에 머무르는 것이 아니라, 하나님께 은혜를 구하는 자리에 있다는 사실을 잊지 말라는 것입니다.

예수님은 이 모든 말씀을 한 문장으로 정리하십니다. 내가 대접받고 싶은 그 방식으로, 오늘 누군가를 대하는 것, 이것이 신앙의 핵심이고, 하나님 나라의 삶의 방식입니다.

오늘 아침, 판단을 내려놓고 은혜를 구하며 사랑으로 한 사람을 대하는 하루가 되기를 기도합니다.

“So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.”(Matthew 7:12)

When we meet people and form relationships, we often experience how many preconceptions are already at work within us. Without actually meeting someone or fully understanding their situation, various rumors and assumptions sometimes take root in our hearts before the person ever does. Personally, I try to remain vigilant about this tendency. And yet, whenever I encounter similar situations again, I am reminded how necessary it is to be cautious and self-aware.

Today, Jesus speaks to us with words that are both clear and challenging: “Do not judge.” We are far too quick to judge others. From a single word or a small action, we often define the whole person. But Jesus asks us a penetrating question: “Why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but fail to notice the plank in your own eye?” In simple terms, it is a question of why we struggle so deeply with self-examination and self-awareness.

Standing before this passage in the morning makes it clear how we are to begin our day. Judgment is not meant to be the foundation of our relationships. Rather, we are given the distinct calling to build our lives on shared grace—choosing grace over judgment as the starting point of how we relate to others.

Jesus continues by saying, “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you.” God is not a cold or distant judge, but a loving Father who gives good gifts to His children. While this passage is often read as encouragement for personal petitions or earnest prayer, it also reminds us of something deeper: we are not meant to remain in the position of judging one another, but to live as those who continually seek God’s grace.

Jesus then gathers all of these teachings into a single sentence: to treat others in the way we ourselves wish to be treated. This is the heart of faith and the way of life in the kingdom of God.

This morning, I pray that we would lay down judgment, seek God’s grace, and choose to love one person well today.

1. This Wednesday, our young adults will be gathering for their opening semester worship service. Due to safety concerns, the location for the Wednesday young adult service has changed several times. Please pray that there will be no difficulties as they gather to worship.

2. Please also pray for the businesses and workplaces of our congregation, and for young adults who are preparing for new paths and new beginnings.
