예수께서 그에게 말씀하셨다. “너는 나를 따라오너라. 죽은 사람의 장례는 죽은 사람들이 치르게 두어라.”(마 8:22)

마태복음 8장은 예수님의 능력이 연속적으로 드러나는 장입니다. 나병환자가 고침을 받고, 중풍병자가 회복되며, 자연과 영적인 세계까지도 예수님의 말씀 앞에 순종합니다. 오늘 본문은 단순히 기적의 나열로 끝나지 않습니다. 마태는 예수님의 능력을 보여준 뒤, 그 능력을 본 사람들이 어떤 선택을 하는지를 우리에게 묻습니다. 기적 이후에 남는 질문은 이것입니다. 우리는 예수님을 어디까지 따를 수 있는가?

예수님께서 베드로의 장모를 고치십니다. 그녀는 열병에서 즉시 회복되고, 곧바로 일어나 예수님을 섬깁니다. 이 장면은 짧지만 매우 중요합니다. 치유는 삶을 원래 상태로 되돌리는 데서 끝나지 않습니다. 회복은 새로운 방향을 향해 움직이게 합니다. 예수님께서 주신 은혜는 안락함으로 돌아가기 위한 것이 아니라, 섬김으로 나아가게 하는 힘이 됩니다.

해가 저물자 많은 병자와 귀신 들린 사람들이 예수님께로 몰려옵니다. 예수님은 그 누구도 외면하지 않으시고, 모두를 고쳐주십니다. 그 풍경 속에서 마태는 갑자기 시선을 바꿉니다. 예수님을 따르겠다고 말하는 두 사람의 고백을 소개합니다. 기적을 본 후의 결단, 은혜를 경험한 뒤의 태도를 보여주기 위함입니다.

한 서기관이 예수님께 나아와 말합니다. “선생님이여, 어디로 가시든지 따르겠습니다.” 열정적이고 결단력 있는 고백처럼 들립니다. 그러나 예수님의 대답은 그를 멈추게 합니다. “여우도 굴이 있고 공중의 새도 거처가 있으되 인자는 머리 둘 곳이 없다.” 예수님은 따름의 대가를 숨기지 않으십니다. 예수님을 따르는 길은 안정과 보장을 약속하는 길이 아니라, 불확실함을 감수하는 길임을 분명히 하십니다.

또 다른 제자가 말합니다. “주여, 먼저 가서 내 아버지를 장사하게 하소서.” 이 말은 지극히 상식적이고, 윤리적으로도 정당해 보입니다. 그러나 예수님의 대답은 우리의 생각을 흔듭니다. “나를 따르라. 죽은 자들로 자기 죽은 자들을 장사하게 하라.” 이 말씀은 효를 무시하라는 명령이 아니라, 따름의 우선순위를 묻는 질문입니다. 무엇이 가장 먼저인가, 무엇이 삶의 중심인가를 드러내는 말씀입니다.

우리는 종종 예수님을 따르겠다고 말하면서도 “먼저”라는 단서를 붙입니다. 먼저 정리할 일이 있고, 먼저 책임져야 할 상황이 있으며, 먼저 준비가 되어야 한다고 말합니다. 그러나 예수님은 조건이 다 갖추어진 다음에 따르라고 부르시지 않습니다. 오히려 지금, 이 자리에서의 선택을 요구하십니다.

믿음은 언젠가의 결심이 아니라 오늘의 결단입니다. 예수님을 따른다는 것은 삶의 모든 문제가 해결된 후에 시작하는 일이 아닙니다. 머리 둘 곳이 분명하지 않은 자리에서, 계획이 완벽하지 않은 순간에도 주님의 부르심에 응답하는 것입니다.

오늘 아침, 예수님은 우리에게 다시 묻고 계십니다. 우리는 예수님을 따르되, 언제 따르려 하는가. 모든 것이 정리된 후인가, 아니면 지금 이 자리인가. 주님은 여전히 동일한 말씀으로 우리를 부르십니다.“나를 따르라.”

묵상

나를 따르라! 주저하게 하는 부르심이죠. 무작정 따르라를 의미하는 것은 아닌것 같습니다. 오늘의 결단이라고 말씀드렸는데, 얼마나 큰 무게로 들리나요? 지금으로도 이 부르심에 충분할까요?

Jesus said to him, “Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.”(Matthew 8:22)

Matthew chapter 8 is a chapter in which the authority and power of Jesus are revealed again and again. A man with leprosy is healed, a paralyzed servant is restored, and even nature and the spiritual realm submit to the word of Jesus. Yet today’s passage does not end as a mere collection of miracles. After showing us Jesus’ power, Matthew turns our attention to a deeper question: how do those who witness this power respond? After the miracles, the question that remains is this—how far are we willing to follow Jesus?

Jesus enters Peter’s house and heals Peter’s mother-in-law. She is immediately restored from her fever and rises to serve him. This brief scene is deeply significant. Healing does not simply return life to what it once was. Restoration moves a person in a new direction. The grace Jesus gives is not meant to bring us back to comfort, but to lead us into service.

As evening comes, many who are sick and demon-possessed gather around Jesus. He turns no one away and heals them all. Yet in the midst of this powerful scene, Matthew suddenly shifts our focus. He introduces the words of two people who say they want to follow Jesus. Their responses reveal what it means to decide after witnessing grace, and how one stands after encountering mercy.

A scribe approaches Jesus and says, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.” It sounds like a passionate and determined confession. But Jesus’ response stops him short. “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” Jesus does not hide the cost of discipleship. Following him is not a path that promises security or comfort, but one that requires embracing uncertainty.

Another disciple then says, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.” This request sounds reasonable, even morally upright. Yet Jesus’ reply unsettles us. “Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.” This is not a command to ignore filial responsibility, but a question about priority. It exposes what comes first and what truly stands at the center of one’s life.

We often say we want to follow Jesus, yet we add the word “first.” First we need to take care of something else. First we need to fulfill a responsibility. First we need to be ready. But Jesus does not call us only after everything is neatly resolved. Instead, he calls us to make a decision here and now.

Faith is not a commitment postponed to some future moment; it is a decision made today. Following Jesus does not begin after every problem in life is solved. It begins even when there is no clear place to rest our head, even when our plans are incomplete, as we respond to his call.

This morning, Jesus asks us again: When will you follow me? After everything is settled, or right here, right now? The Lord continues to speak the same words to us today.“Follow me.”

Reflection

“Follow me.”It is a call that makes us hesitate. It does not seem to mean following blindly or recklessly. We spoke of “today’s decision,” but how heavy does that sound to you? Is today enough to respond to this call? Is who you are right now sufficient?
