예수께서 무리를 보시고, 그들을 불쌍히 여기셨다. 그들은 마치 목자 없는 양과 같이, 고생에 지쳐서 기운이 빠져 있었기 때문이다. (마태복음 9:36)

마태복음 9장은 보는 눈으로 시작합니다. 예수님은 소경 두 사람을 보십니다. 귀신 들려 말 못하는 사람을 보십니다. 그리고 마지막으로 이름 없는 “무리”를 보십니다. 예수님은 사람들을 스쳐 지나가는 시선으로 보지 않으십니다. 그분의 시선은 언제나 멈추는 시선이며, 관계로 이어지는 시선입니다.

예수님은 보는 순간, 그들을 불쌍히 여기십니다. 이 불쌍히 여김은 감정적인 연민에 그치지 않습니다. 헬라어로 사용된 이 표현은 내장이 흔들릴 만큼의 깊은 연민을 뜻합니다. 예수님은 고통을 멀리서 관찰하지 않으시고, 그 고통 안으로 들어가시는 분이십니다.

소경들은 길가에서 외칩니다. “다윗의 자손이여, 우리를 불쌍히 여기소서.” 그들의 외침은 정제된 신앙 고백이라기보다 절박한 호소에 가깝습니다. 예수님은 그들에게 즉시 응답하지 않으시고 한 가지 질문을 던지십니다. “내가 능히 이 일을 할 줄을 믿느냐?” 예수님은 능력을 증명하시기 전에, 그들의 믿음을 묻고 계십니다.

그들의 믿음은 완전하지 않았을지도 모릅니다. 그러나 분명한 것은, 그들은 멈추지 않고 예수님께 나아왔다는 사실입니다. 예수님은 그 믿음을 정죄하지 않으시고 받아주십니다. 그리고 말씀하십니다. “너희 믿음대로 되라.” 치유는 믿음의 크기보다, 믿음의 방향에서 시작됩니다.

이어 등장하는 사람은 귀신 들려 말하지 못하는 사람입니다. 그는 아무 말도 하지 못합니다. 스스로를 변호할 수도, 도움을 요청할 수도 없습니다. 그러나 예수님은 그의 침묵을 외면하지 않으십니다. 말씀으로 귀신을 쫓아내시고, 그의 입을 여십니다. 은혜는 언제나 우리가 말할 수 있을 때만 임하는 것이 아님을 보여주는 장면입니다.

이후 예수님은 개인을 넘어 무리를 바라보십니다. 이름도, 사연도 기록되지 않은 사람들입니다. 그러나 예수님은 그들을 향해 불쌍히 여기셨다고 말씀합니다. 그 이유는 그들이 악해서가 아니라, 연약해서입니다. 그들은 목자 없는 양과 같이 지치고 흩어져 있었습니다. 방향을 잃고, 돌봄을 받지 못한 존재들이었습니다.

예수님은 문제의 원인을 분명히 말씀하십니다. “추수할 것은 많되 일꾼이 적다.” 세상이 어두운 이유는 추수할 것이 없어서가 아닙니다. 사람들의 가능성이 사라져서도 아닙니다. 그들을 돌보고 이끌 일꾼이 부족하기 때문입니다. 그래서 예수님은 제자들에게 행동보다 먼저 기도를 요청하십니다. “그러므로 추수의 주인에게 일꾼을 보내 달라고 기도하여라.”

이 아침, 우리는 어디에 서 있는지 자신에게 묻게 됩니다. 치유를 기다리는 사람의 자리에 서 있는지, 연민으로 바라보아야 할 누군가를 외면하고 있지는 않은지, 혹은 나 자신이 이미 지쳐버린 목자 없는 양은 아닌지 돌아보게 됩니다.

묵상

예수님은 오늘도 우리에게 묻고 계십니다. “내가 능히 이 일을 할 줄을 믿느냐?”

“When Jesus saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.”(Matthew 9:36)

Matthew chapter 9 begins with an act of seeing. Jesus sees two blind men. He sees a man who is demon-possessed and unable to speak. And finally, He sees the nameless “crowds.” Jesus does not look at people with a passing glance. His gaze always lingers; it is a gaze that stops, a gaze that leads into relationship.

The moment Jesus sees them, He is moved with compassion. This compassion is not a shallow emotional response. The Greek word used here refers to a deep, gut-wrenching mercy—a compassion that stirs the very depths of one’s being. Jesus does not observe suffering from a distance; He enters into it.

The blind men cry out along the road, “Have mercy on us, Son of David!” Their cry is less a polished confession of faith and more a desperate plea. Jesus does not respond immediately. Instead, He asks them one question: “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” Before demonstrating His power, Jesus first asks about their faith.

Their faith may not have been perfect. But one thing is clear: they did not stop coming to Jesus. He does not condemn their faith; He receives it. And He says to them, “According to your faith let it be done to you.” Healing does not begin with the size of one’s faith, but with the direction of one’s faith.

Next appears a man who is demon-possessed and unable to speak. He cannot say a word. He cannot defend himself or ask for help. Yet Jesus does not ignore his silence. With a word, He drives out the demon and opens the man’s mouth. This scene reminds us that grace does not come only when we are able to speak.

After this, Jesus lifts His eyes beyond individuals and looks at the crowds. They are people without names or recorded stories. Yet Scripture tells us that Jesus had compassion on them. Not because they were evil, but because they were weak. They were weary and scattered, like sheep without a shepherd—people who had lost direction and lacked care.

Jesus clearly names the problem: “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.” The world is not dark because there is nothing to harvest. Human potential has not disappeared. The problem is the lack of workers who will care for and guide the people. That is why Jesus asks His disciples to pray before they act: “Therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest field.”

This morning, we are invited to ask ourselves where we are standing. Are we standing in the place of someone waiting for healing? Are we ignoring someone who needs to be seen with compassion? Or have we ourselves become weary sheep without a shepherd?

Meditation

Even today, Jesus asks us the same question:“Do you believe that I am able to do this?”

1. We ask for your prayers for the family of Deacon Lee Kyung-tae. His mother, Kwon Sa Nim Lee (Kang) Jung-sook, at the age of 91, was called home by the Lord on Sunday, January 25, 2026, at 2:30 p.m. The funeral service will be held this Saturday, February 7, in Virginia. As our conductor will be traveling with him for the funeral, please pray for safe travel and for all aspects of the funeral service.
