So Moses made a bronze snake and put it up on a pole. Then when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, they lived. Numbers 21:9 (NIV)

On their harsh journey through the wilderness, the people of Israel once again face a test of faith. After a sudden attack by King Arad, during which some Israelites were taken captive, they cried out to God with a desperate vow:“If You will deliver this enemy into our hands, we will completely destroy their cities.”God answered their prayer, and after their victory, the place was named Hormah, meaning “utter destruction.”

Yet human memory is short. As they detour around the land of Edom, the people become frustrated and start complaining once more:“Why have you brought us out of Egypt to die in this wilderness? There is no bread! There is no water! And we detest this miserable food!”

God’s response was swift. He sent venomous snakes among them, and many Israelites died from the bites. Confronted with death, the people finally acknowledged their sin:“We have sinned by speaking against the Lord and against you.”

But for those who repent, God’s mercy is always new. He gave Moses an unexpected method of salvation:“Make a snake and put it up on a pole; anyone who is bitten can look at it and live.”It was a simple act, but it carried profound spiritual meaning. Those who looked at the bronze snake were healed and spared from death.

This event foreshadows what Jesus would later say:“Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes in Him may have eternal life.”In this mysterious moment in the wilderness, we see the intertwining of judgment and grace, death and life—a divine preview of the cross.

Reflection

"Have you ever complained to God for any reason?"
