“What have I done to you to make you beat me these three times?” (Numbers 22:28)
Passage Summary
King Balak of Moab sends even higher-ranking officials a second time to summon the diviner Balaam, hoping he will curse Israel. God allows Balaam to go, but commands him to speak only what He instructs. As Balaam rides his donkey, the Lord’s anger burns against him, and the angel of the Lord stands in the way. Balaam doesn’t see the angel, but his donkey does and turns aside or stops three times. Eventually, the donkey, enabled by God, speaks to Balaam, questioning why she has been beaten.
Meditation
We often assume we know God’s will. We may even say we prayed and received an answer. But how pure are our motives, desires, and hidden intentions?
Balaam pretended to follow God’s command, but his heart was still drawn to reward and honor. God saw through that subtle hypocrisy. So He blocked Balaam’s path—and even used a speechless donkey to warn him. What a stunning scene!
Sometimes, unexpected obstacles appear in our lives. The path is blocked, direction is lost, and frustration repeats itself. In such moments, have you ever considered that an angel of the Lord might be standing there?
Even today, God may block the path we stubbornly try to follow and speak through surprising messengers—like a donkey, or situations and people we’ve overlooked.May our eyes be opened, our ears attentive, and our hearts sensitive not to miss God’s warnings and guidance.
