당신이 만일 예수는 주님이라고 입으로 고백하고, 하나님께서 그를 죽은 사람들 가운데서 살리신 것을 마음으로 믿으면 구원을 얻을 것입니다. 10사람은 마음으로 믿어서 의에 이르고, 입으로 고백해서 구원에 이르게 됩니다. (로마서 10:9-10)

어제 문득 어릴적 살던 동네, 그리고 주인집 아들이 생각났습니다. 성곤이, 그리고 동생은 경아, 그위에 누나도 있었는데 이름이 기억나질 않네요. 처음 저를 교회에 데리고 갔던 주인집 아주머니는 성곤이를 시켜서 아침마다 주일학교에 데리고 가도록 안내했습니다. 한살어린 성곤이는 성깔이 있었던 얼핏 기억나는건 나한테 돌을 던진 기억이 나는데 그래도 잘 놀았던것 같습니다.

한참 시간이 흘러서 어머니가 우연이 전해온 소식에 성곤이는 성악을 하고 유학을 다녀온후에 교회에서 성가지휘를 한다 였습니다. 그리고 동시에 전한 소식은 아들이 목사되었다는 이야기에 주인집 아주머니가 많이 기뻐했다는 이야기를 건네 들었습니다.

돈을 던진 기억 이후에 별 기억이 없는 관계인데 한참을 지나서 전해들은 근황은 서로 뜻밖이었을 것입니다. 하나님은 어떻게 사람을 다루시고 열매를 맺기 위해 어떤 일을 하실지 잘 모릅니다. 그래서 우리들은 가장 중요한 삶의 태도는 기대와 소망을 품는 것이라는 생각이 들었습니다. 어떻게 기도하고 어떻게 생각하냐에 따라 하나님이 어떻게 이끌어가실지를 기대하는 것을 통해 우리들의 삶은 세워져 갑니다.

바울이 이방인들에게 복음을 전하는 것을 미리 기대하고 꿈꾸고 그러지 않았을 것입니다. 하나님이 그렇게 인도하셨는데, 바울은 이를 위해 신학이라는 노력을 선택합니다. 이스라엘을 향한 애정이 없는 것이 아니라 이스라엘이 율법을 통한 노력은 한계가 있고, 하나님의 전적인 은혜를 기대해야하는데 이것은 믿음으로 의롭게 된다는 것을 잘 기억해야한다는 것입니다. 이를 통해 이방인이나 이스라엘이나 동등하게 하나님의 은혜가 주어진다는 것이 이해가 됩니다.

복음은 누구에게나 보편적으로 전해집니다. 차별이 없다는 뜻입니다. 주인집 아들 성곤이는 찬양으로 하나님께 영광을 돌리고 아랫층 세를 살던 아들은 목사가 되어서 복음을 전합니다. 시간이 지나면 꼭 한번 보고 싶습니다.

하나님의 은혜가 보편적이라는 뜻은 무엇일까요?

Romans 10:9–10“If you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.” (Romans 10:9–10)

Yesterday, I suddenly remembered the neighborhood where I grew up and the landlord’s children. There was Sung-gon, his younger sister Kyung-ah, and an older sister whose name I can no longer recall. The landlady, who was the one who first brought me to church, told Sung-gon to take me along to Sunday School every morning.

Though he was a year younger than I was, Sung-gon had a temper. I vaguely remember him once throwing a stone at me. Yet, despite that, we played well together.

Many years later, my mother happened to tell me some news: Sung-gon had gone abroad to study vocal music and eventually became a church choir conductor. At the same time, she shared that when the landlady heard I had become a pastor, she was overjoyed.

Beyond that one memory of him throwing a stone, I don’t recall much of our relationship. So to hear of his later life—and for him to hear of mine—must have been quite unexpected. God works in ways we cannot predict, shaping people and bearing fruit in surprising ways. This made me think: the most important posture in life is to hold on to expectation and hope. Depending on how we pray and how we think, we can anticipate how God may guide our lives, and through that anticipation our lives are built up.

Paul probably never expected or dreamed that he would proclaim the gospel to the Gentiles. Yet God led him in that way, and Paul chose theology as the framework for this calling. It was not that he lacked love for Israel, but rather that he recognized the limitations of striving for righteousness through the law. What Israel truly needed was to expect God’s grace—that righteousness comes by faith. Through this, both Jews and Gentiles alike receive God’s grace equally.

The gospel is universal. It is for everyone, without discrimination. The landlord’s son, Sung-gon, glorifies God through music, and the boy who lived downstairs became a pastor to preach the gospel. One day, I would very much like to see him again.
