디너처치 모임 (9월27일 토)

33하나님의 부유하심은 어찌 그리 크십니까? 하나님의 지혜와 지식은 어찌 그리 깊고 깊으십니까? 그 어느 누가 하나님의 판단을 헤아려 알 수 있으며, 그 어느 누가 하나님의 길을 더듬어 찾아낼 수 있겠습니까? 34 “누가 주님의 마음을 알았으며, 누가 주님의 조언자가 되었습니까?” 35 “누가 먼저 무엇을 드렸기에 주님의 답례를 바라겠습니까?” 36만물이 그에게서 나고, 그로 말미암아 있고, 그를 위하여 있습니다. 그에게 영광이 세세에 있기를 빕니다. 아멘. (로마서 11:33-36)

주일예배를 마치고 오후 4시쯤 바트를 타고 공항에 가서 밤비행기를 타고는 월요일 새벽 5시30분에 뉴저지에 떨어졌습니다. 그리고 바로 한인총회 진행을 위한 회의와 라이드등 종일 달려서 개회예배 사회를 보고 긴 하루를 마무리하고는 오늘 화요일 아침을 맞이했습니다. 230명의 목회자들과 평신도들이 모였고, 첫 날 개회예배는 찬양부터 말씀 그리고 참석자들이 자발적으로 구성된 찬양대의 찬양까지 하나 빠질 것없이 은혜였습니다. 찬양을 인도한 팀은 한국에서 국악찬양으로 예배드리는 "들리오"라는 팀이었는데 장구와 꽹과리로 함께한 특별한 찬양을 올려드렸습니다.

은혜는 예상치 못한 상황에서 주어지는 것 같습니다. 피곤함이 가득한 몸으로 예배사회를 보는데 구름에 떠있는것같고, 사람들의 이야기는 하나님이 음성처럼 들리고, 내가 하는 말은 방언처럼 느껴지는 상황에서 하나님은 강력한 은혜를 주셨슴니다. 감동이 일어나고 감격을 나누고 말하고 나누는 이야기가 주어진 것에 감사한 것을 나누며 어제 하루를 마무리했습니다.

하나님이 은혜를 주시는 방식은 당혹스러울때가 있습니다. 잘 준비되고, 평화롭게 안정적인 상태가 아닌 불안하고 부족한상황에서 하나님은 큰 은혜를 주실때가 있습니다. 이럴때 하나님이 왜 그렇게 하실까?라는 질문도 생기지만, 하나님이 일하시는 방법에 늘 겸손할 수 밖에 없게 하는 것 같습니다.

바울은 이방인들을 구원함으로 결국 유대인들은 부끄럽게함으로 이들의 구원을 완성하신다고 이야기합니다. 먼저 선택받은 것은 자랑이 아니라 책임이며 오히려 그 완고함과 교만함으로 인해서 하나님은 이방인을 구원하시기로 하시고 바울을 사도로 세웠다는 것입니다. 이 부르심에 응답한 바울의 노력도 대단하고 하나님이 이끄시는 길위에 순종하는 바울의 고백도 대단합니다.

오늘 모임을 마무리하면 내일 아침 일찍 한국으로 떠나게 됩니다. 이런 저런 계획이 있지만, 어떤 방법으로 이끌어가실지 기대가됩니다. 매일 아침 묵상으로 인사드릴수 있을지는 모르지만, 노력하도록 하겠습니다. 생생하게 예상치 못하게 이끌어가시는 하나님의 은혜를 나누겠습니다.

기대하지 않았는데 기대이상으로 경험한것, 기대를 크게 했는데 기대가 이하였던 적이 있나요?

1. 열린교회를 든든히 세워가기 위해 노력하는 손길들을 기억해주시고, 그 손길을 통해 은혜가 가득하도록 기도해주세요.

2. 10월2일에 알라메다 법원에서 오클랜드 빌딩에 관련된 히어링을 합니다. 잘 마무리되고 좋은 결과를 위해서 기도해주세요. 분명히 우리들은 잘못한게 없더라도 이 예상치 못한 일들은 기도를 통해 든든히 채워질줄 믿습니다.

33 Oh, the depth of the riches of God! How deep and profound are His wisdom and knowledge! Who has ever comprehended His judgments? Who has ever traced out His ways? 34 "Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been His counselor?" 35 "Who has ever given to God, that God should repay them?" 36 For from Him and through Him and for Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever! Amen. Reflection

After finishing Sunday worship, I took BART around 4 p.m. to the airport and boarded a night flight that landed in New Jersey at 5:30 a.m. Monday morning. From there, the day was filled with meetings, travel, and preparations for the Korean American Annual Conference. I led the opening worship service and finally ended a very long day, waking to Tuesday morning.

Around 230 pastors and lay leaders gathered. The opening worship of the first day was full of grace—from praise to the Word, and even the choir that had been formed voluntarily by the participants. The worship team was a group from Korea called Deullieo, who led praise with traditional Korean instruments such as janggu and kkwaenggwari. It was a truly special offering of praise.

Grace often comes when we least expect it. While leading worship in a body weighed down with fatigue, it felt as though I were floating on a cloud. The voices of people around me sounded like the voice of God, and even my own words felt like speaking in tongues. In that space, God poured out His abundant grace. I was deeply moved, and as I shared and received stories with others, I was filled with gratitude.

Sometimes the way God gives grace can be disorienting. Not when everything is well prepared, peaceful, and stable, but in times of weakness, inadequacy, and uncertainty—God often gives the greatest grace. In such moments, we may ask, "Why, Lord, in this way?" Yet it humbles us to remember that God's ways are not ours.

Paul reminds us that through the salvation of the Gentiles, the Jews too would ultimately be brought to salvation. The privilege of being chosen was never a reason for pride, but a responsibility. Their stubbornness and pride led God to open salvation to the Gentiles, appointing Paul as an apostle. Paul's response of obedience and his tireless labor in answering this call stand as a powerful testimony of surrender to God's leading.

As I prepare to leave for Korea early tomorrow morning, I hold many plans in mind, yet I am most eager to see how God will lead me beyond my own expectations. I may not be able to share these morning reflections every single day, but I will try. What I know is this: God's grace often surprises us, breaking in more vividly and powerfully than we could ever have imagined.

• On October 2, there will be a court hearing in Alameda regarding the Oakland building. Please pray for it to be resolved well and for a favorable outcome. Even when we have done no wrong, we believe that such unexpected challenges can be met with strength and assurance through prayer.
