그래서 하나님께서는 이것을 보시고 “그를 의롭다고 여겨 주셨습니다.” 23“그가 의롭다는 인정을 받았다” 하는 말은, 아브라함만을 위하여 기록된 것이 아니라, 24하나님께서 의롭다고 여겨 주실 우리, 곧 우리 주 예수를 죽은 사람들 가운데서 살리신 분을 믿는 우리까지도 위한 것입니다 (로마서 4:22-24)

그제 어제 비가왔어요. 이 시점에 비는 사실 이례적입니다. 매년 뭔가 바뀌는 계절에 지구 온난화에 대한 걱정을 하게되는데, 제가 2020년에 버클리에 다시 왔을때도 8월에 비가 온적이 있으니 이제는 그럴수 있다는 것으로 바뀌는 것 같습니다.

어제는 수요성경공부 저녁모임을 마치니 날이 어두워진것이 해가 짧아진것을 깨달았어요. 시간은 가고 이제 가을이 성큼 다가오고 있다는 생각에 마음에 조바심이 납니다.

가을이 오면 해야할 일이 많습니다. 한해를 마무리하고 정리하는 것은 물론이고 내년 계획을 세워나가기 위한 준비를 해야합니다. 올해는 달력이 한국에서 보통 우편으로 배를 타고 오는데 관세때문에 배로 보내는 우편이 중지가되어서, 제가 한국에 갔을때 들고오려고 합니다.

바뀌는 무언가에 발빠르게 적응하지 않으면 순조롭지 않은 시간을 보내고 있습니다. 조지아에서 한국인 300명이 이민국에 잡혔다가 풀려났죠. 잘 협상이 되었다고 하는데 경험하지 못해본것에 대응하고 치리해야하는게 요즘에 가장 큰 숙제처럼 느껴집니다.

새로운것들을 자꾸 생기고, 그것에 적응하기 위해 몸은 바쁘고

바울은 예수의 복음을 전하기 위해 그리 빠르지 않은 시대에 가장 속도감있게 사역을 한 사람입니다. 자신이 세우지 않은 로마교회에 편지를 쓰는 것도 사실 바울의 명성이 어디까지 전달되었는지는 모르지만, 로마교회 입장에서는 건너들은 누군가가 이런 저런 이야기로 교회를 치리하는 것인데, 쉽게 받아들였을까? 라는 생각을 할때가 있습니다.

바울이 이 로마교회에 유대인과는 다른 환경속에 예수님의 복음이 온전히 뿌리 내리게 하기 위한 노력이 느껴지는 구절 구절속에 바울의 분주함과 발 빠름이 느껴집니다. 아브라함이라는 인물이 곧 로마사람들이 마주할 수 있는 "믿음"의 표상이고, 소망없는 중에 믿음을 통해 하나님을 신뢰한 아브라함의 믿음은 로마와 이방인들이 따가야할 믿음의 삶이라는 것입니다.

이것은 새로운 종교적 방식입니다. 신전에 신과 마주하고 제사장의 중간역할로 완성되었던 신과의 관계가 바울은 예수 그리스도의 십자가 사건으로 "믿음" 즉 지금 내가 살고 있는 자리에서의 믿음을 통해 하나님으로 부터 의롭게 될수 있다는 것입니다.

열린교회에 속도감있는 사역과 반응 그리고 헤쳐나갈 일들 그리고 함께 세워갈 꿈이 있습니다. 믿음으로 이롭게 되는 이 훌륭한 신앙구조속에서 우리들도 든든히 하나님 나라를 세워가기 위한 노력과 헌신이 필요합니다. 바울이 오늘 우리들에게 우리에게 갈바를 안내하고 있습니다.

“It was reckoned to him as righteousness” was not written for Abraham alone, but also for us, to whom it will be reckoned—for us who believe in Him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead.(Romans 4:22–24)

It rained the day before yesterday and yesterday.At this time of year, rain is unusual.Every year when something changes in the seasons, I find myself worrying about global warming.When I returned to Berkeley in 2020, it also rained in August, so now I think I just have to accept that this might become normal.

Yesterday, after finishing our Wednesday evening Bible study, I noticed how dark it had become.It made me realize that the days are getting shorter, and I felt a kind of restlessness, sensing that autumn is coming quickly.

When autumn comes, there is much to do.Not only do we need to wrap up the year and organize things, but we must also prepare to set plans for the coming year.This year, the calendars that usually arrive from Korea by boat will not come that way because sea mail has been suspended due to customs issues.So I plan to bring them back with me when I go to Korea.

If we do not adapt quickly to the things that are changing, we find ourselves in a rough season.Recently, in Georgia, 300 Koreans were detained by immigration and then released.I hear that the negotiations went well, but facing and handling things I have never experienced before feels like one of the biggest challenges these days.

New things keep arising, and our bodies stay busy trying to adapt to them.

Paul was someone who, in a time that was not particularly fast-paced, carried out his ministry with remarkable urgency to proclaim the gospel of Jesus.Writing a letter to the church in Rome—even though he had never established it himself—makes me wonder.We do not know exactly how far Paul’s reputation had spread, but from the Roman church’s perspective, someone they had only heard of was giving them direction on how to live and govern their community.I sometimes wonder if they found it easy to accept.

In Paul’s letter to the Romans, I feel his busyness and urgency in every line as he works to ensure that the gospel of Jesus takes root fully in a context different from the Jewish world.Abraham is presented as a model of faith that the Romans could relate to.Abraham trusted God when there was no reason for hope, and that trust became the way the Romans and other Gentiles were also called to live.

This was a new way of relating to God.Instead of encountering God in a temple through the mediation of priests, Paul proclaims that through the event of Jesus’ cross, it is faith—faith right where we are living now—that makes us righteous before God.

At Yeolin Church, there is a need for ministry that responds with speed and urgency, for the tasks ahead of us that we must overcome, and for the dreams we must build together.Within this beautiful framework of being made righteous by faith, we too must make every effort and dedicate ourselves to building up the kingdom of God.Paul today shows us the way we must go.
