그러나 우리가 아직 죄인이었을 때에, 그리스도께서 우리를 위하여 죽으셨습니다. 이리하여 하나님께서는 우리들에 대한 자기의 사랑을 실증하셨습니다.(로마서 5:8)
어제 점심쯤이었던것 같습니다. 워싱턴 DC에서 전화가 왔습니다. 보통은 저장되지 않은 전화를 받지 않는 편인데 제 전화와 교회전화가 연결되어서 혹시나해서 받았습니다. 유창한 한국말로, "워싱턴 DC 총영사관에 김재형 사무관입니다."라는 인사와 함께 제가 한국에서 범죄와 관련되서 한국검찰이 저에게 연락할 방법이 없어서 영사관에서 전화를 했다는 것입니다.
순간, 실소가 터지면서 이렇게 까지 열심히 일하는 "보이스 피싱"에 대해 놀라움과 "이게 말로만 듣던 것"이라는 약간의 신기함 그리고 만약 이런 전화를 받으면 속는 사람도 있을수 있겠다는 생각이 들었습니다. "당장 인터넷이 되는 곳으로 가셔서..."이쯤을 듣자하니 이쯤을 듣자하니, 보이스 피싱을 풍자한 개그가 생각남과 동시에 전화를 끊어버렸습니다.
정확하게 제 이름을 알고 있고, 자신이 총영사관 사무관이라는 호칭, 미국 이민자로 한인들에게는 매우 위협적(?!)인 보이스 피싱일 수 있다는 생각에 교인들과 꼭 나눠야겠다는 생각이 들었습니다.
삶은 경험으로 체워지고, 이런것을 연륜 또는 베테랑이라는 이름으로 전문가 또는 능수능란한 존재로 채워져가는 것 같습니다. 처음 미국에 와서 지금까지 살아내면서 이제는 미국에서 사는 한국사람은~! 이라며 썰을 풀수 있는 수준이 되었는데, 여기에 하나의 능력치가 추가되었습니다. "보이스 피싱"이 얼마나 열심히 일하냐 하면!..
매일 아침 할일들을 나열하면 잘되고 있는 일, 잘될까? 걱정하는 일 그리고 잘 안되네..라며 실망스러운 일들을 분류하며 하루를 시작합니다. 하루를 마무리할때는 어떤 일로 보완을 했는가?를 생각하며 잠을 드는데, 이상적인것은 이렇게 하면 약점은 보완되어지고, 강점은 더욱 강하게 효율적으로 삶이 바뀔것 같은데 직접 부딪히는 경험만한게 없습니다. 그중에 실패한 경험은 결국 그 다음에는 효율적이고 잘 대처할 수 있는 지혜를 얻게 해줍니다.
보이스피싱의 열심은 수많은 실패를 감내하고 그중에 한두개 건지면 성공하는 이른반 묻지도 따지지도 않는 한가지 목적을 위해 모든 실패를 무시하는 일을 서슴없이 합니다. 다른것은 모르겠는데 실패를 두려워하지 않고 계속 그일을 이렇게 까지 열심하는 것을 보면 아마 다른 일을 좀 그리 하면 비슷한 열매(?!)를 볼수 있지 않을까?라는 생각이 들었습니다.
로마서는 바울의 연륜이 뭍어나는 서신입니다. 다른 서신들과는 다른 성숙함과 여유가 느껴집니다. "믿음으로 의롭게 되었으니, 하나님과 평화를 이루는 삶" 이 문장은 바울이 겸험한 신앙생활의 묘미입니다.
교회, 예수믿는것, 그리고 교회안에서 봉사하는 일등은 모두 "하나님과 평화를 이루기 위함"이라는 바울의 고백은 신앙생활을 좀더 명확하게 그려줍니다. 그러니 신앙생활중에 경험하는 환난을 인내할 수있는 이유는 하나님과 화목을 이루기 위해서 하나님과 기뻐할 수 있기때문이라는 바울의 경험을 우리는 간접적으로 경험하는 것입니다.
보이스 피싱의 열심에 저는 자극받았습니다. 실패를 두려워해 해보지 않은 일이 더 많고, 이렇게 집요한 이들의 행위를 교인들에게 알려서, 속지 않도록 해야겠다는 경험이 생겼습니다. 이 경험은 저에게는 어이없는 일이지만, 다른 사람에게는 큰 도움이 될수 있고, 여러분들은 저를 통해 간접적인 경험으로 경계할 수 있는 마음이 생깁니다.
바울은 이런 마음으로 자신이 고백하는 예수 그리스도를 전하며 로마교회 교인들에게 은혜와 사랑를 전하고 있습니다. "예수로 말미암아 하나님과 화목하게 되었다. 그리고 하나님 안에서 기뻐할 수 있다" 이 간단한 명제가 오늘날 로마교회를 넘어서 우리에게도 전해집니다. 이런 힘으로 세상을 힘차게 살아가기를 소망합니다.

나쁜일도 이렇게 열심히 하는데, 생명을 살리는 일에 열심을 내어보도록 하죠

Yesterday, around lunchtime, I received a call from Washington, D.C.Normally, I do not answer calls from unknown numbers, but since my personal phone is connected to the church line, I thought it might be important and picked up.
In fluent Korean, the caller introduced himself: “This is Officer Jae-Hyung Kim from the Washington, D.C. Consulate General.” He said that because I was allegedly connected to a crime in Korea and the Korean prosecution office had no way to reach me, the consulate was contacting me on their behalf.
At that moment, I couldn’t help but let out a laugh — partly out of surprise at how “hard-working” these scammers are, partly with a strange sense of “Ah, so this is what I’ve only heard about before.” And I thought to myself, If someone else received this call, they could easily be deceived. When he began to say, “Please go somewhere with internet access right away…,” a comedy sketch parodying phone scams popped into my head, and I simply hung up.
They knew my name exactly, used an official-sounding title like “Consular Officer,” and spoke in a way that could sound very threatening — especially to immigrants. It struck me that I needed to share this experience with my congregation so no one would be tricked.
Life is built up through experience. These experiences eventually shape us into people of maturity, experts, or “veterans.” Since coming to the U.S. and surviving here all these years, I now find myself saying, “As someone who lives in America…” and telling stories. And now, I feel like I’ve gained a new skill: identifying phone scams.
Every morning I begin my day by listing the things I have to do — the things that are going well, the things I worry might not go well, and the things that seem to be failing. When I end my day, I reflect on how I tried to make up for the shortcomings. Ideally, this process should make my weaknesses stronger and my strengths more efficient — but there is nothing like real, direct experience. Even failed experiences eventually teach us how to respond more wisely next time.
What amazes me about these scam callers is their persistence: they endure countless failures, but if they get just one or two “successful” victims, they count it a win and keep going — without shame. They are singularly focused on one purpose and refuse to be discouraged by failure. I thought to myself, If we could work that hard on something good, what kind of fruit would we see?
Romans is a letter full of Paul’s spiritual maturity. It has a depth and calm assurance that feels different from his other letters.“Since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God.” This sentence is the essence of what Paul had discovered through years of faith: that the goal of church life, faith in Christ, and even serving in the church is to live in peace with God.
This is why we can endure hardships: because we know that through them we are being reconciled to God, and we can rejoice in God even in suffering. Through Paul’s words, we get to share in his experience indirectly — we see why he could rejoice even in trials.
Even this phone scam experience has motivated me. There are many things I have not tried simply because I was afraid of failing. Seeing how persistently these scammers work challenged me: I want to let my congregation know about this so they will not fall prey. What may have been just an annoying incident for me could actually be helpful to others. Through me, you now have a chance to be watchful too.
Paul wrote with this same heart — sharing the good news of Jesus Christ so the Roman believers might also share in God’s grace and love.“Through Jesus we have been reconciled to God, and we rejoice in God.” This simple truth is not only for the Roman church but for us today.May this truth give us strength to live boldly in this world.

Pray for our Church School — that it may become more creative and centered on serving the local community.
Pray for our Youth Ministry — that a new pastor will connect well with the students and help them grow in faith.
Pray for our Young Adult Ministry — that young adults may commit themselves more deeply to God’s work within the church.
