죄의 삯은 죽음이요, 하나님의 선물은 우리 주 예수 그리스도 안에서 누리는 영원한 생명입니다.(로마서 6:23)

한국에 어릴적 다니던 교회에서 교회창림 50주년이 되었으니 축하영상 메시지 20초짜리를 준비해달라는 연락을 받았습니다. 거의 20년만에 교회누나로 부터 받은 메시지는 순간 당시의 시간으로 이끌려서 한참을 추억놀이에 빠지게했습니다. 어색할만한데 교회 큰 누나로 기억되는 그분은 교회 사무원으로 일을 하고 있고, 제가 제일 좋아했던 교회형과 결혼을 했습니다. 당시 담임목사님의 소원이 교회안에서 찾아서 결혼하는 것을 그렇게 입에 달고 사셨었는데 훌륭한 열매중에 하나입니다.

저에게만 부탁을 하는게 아니라, 미국에 살고 있는 교회 출신 사역자들에게도 연락을 부탁했습니다. 그런중에 동기였던 여자아이가 갑자기 신학을 공부해서 미국에서 사역한다는 이야기를 들었습니다. 노래를 좋아하고 많은 교회 형들이 좋아했던 그 친구는 결혼후 어려움을 겪었다는 소식이 마지막이었는데 뜻밖의 소식에 삶이 어디로 인도되어지고 이끌려가는 가에 대한 깊은 물음이 생겼습니다.

아마 제 소식에 사람들은 놀랄수도 있겠다. 나는 그냥 살아지는것 같은데 다른 사람들이 볼때 그 삶이라는게 그냥 살아지지고 않고 누군가의 간절한 기도로 누군가의 관심과 사랑으로 또는 무관심해도 들으면 반가운 마음으로 걱정과 또는 우려들이 모아져서 살아진다는 생각이 들었습니다.

바울이 일면식도 없는 로마교회에시 이렇게 편지를 쓰는 이유도 비슷하다는 생각이 듭니다. 누군가의 기도와 관심으로 교회는 든든히 세워지는 것, 우리들이 기억해야할 중요한 교회론입니다.

요즘 교회는 우리교회만 잘되면 되는 것으로 생각합니다. 우리교회가 잘되면 좋은데 우리교회만 잘되면 이건 우리들이 우려와 걱정으로 살펴야할 일입니다. 교회사역을 하는데 잘되는 곳만 밀어주고, 잘 안되는 곳은 내버려두자는 이야기를 한 분의 제안이 아직까지도 저는 해결되지 않습니다. 잘 안되는 곳과 잘되는 곳의 기준이 무엇인가? 잘되는곳만 서포트하라는 것은 잘되지 않으니 서포트를 받으려는것이 아닐까?

저희가 영어예배로 지원한 펀드가 연회에서 1년에 $50,000 (3년간 지원예정) Korean Ministry Plan(KMP)에서 1년에 $40,000을 지원 받게 되었습니다. KMP는 현재 저희가 후원하는 "세계선교국" Global Ministry UMC에 속해있는 국내 한인선교를 위해 마련된 기관입니다.

총 $90,000의 후원을 받습니다 여기에는 인건비 영어예배를 세워가기 위해 필요한 여러가지 제원들을 사용하게 되어있습니다. 가장 많은 비용은 사역자를 후원하는 것인데, 아직 마땅한 사역자를 찾지 못해서 저희가 Dinner Church라는 이름으로 토요일에 게스트 스피커를 모셔서 한달에 한번 예배를 드리고 있습니다.

이런 후원의 결과는 소위, 될것 같은 사역이기때문에 이정도 후원하겠다는 의미입니다. 사실 현실적으로는 돈으로 사역이 완성되지 않습니다. 마땅한 비전과 열정 그것을 위해 노력하는 후원자들의 노력으로 가능합니다. 1년에 $90,000이 쓰여지는데 저희가 그만한 열매를 맺기 위해서는 그만한 노력 이상이 필요하다는 의미이기도 합니다.

앞선 질문으로 돌아가서, 잘되는 곳에만 서포트하냐? 결국 이것은 빚지는 마음이라는 생각이 들었습니다. 가장 어려운 자리에서 외면과 또는 기대가 없는 곳에서 뼈를 깎아내며 헌신하는 사역자와 교인들의 마음을 받아 후원받고 사역하는 것이라면 우리도 늘 이런 헌신과 마음을 기억하며 우리의 사역의 열매가 흘러넘치도록 노력해야한다는 것입니다.

바울이 "죄의 종이냐, 의의 종이냐"에 대해서 오늘 본문에서 묻습니다. 이말은 우리들의 힘을 어디에 쏟고 살거인가? 대한 질문입니다. 시간을 가고 아이들을 커가는데 우리들의 관심은 눈앞에만 있는가? 아니면 더 큰 관심과 대상이 필요한가의 질문입니다.

우리의 눈을 더욱 확장에서 우리만 보는 눈을 모두를 보는 눈으로 바뀌었으면합니다. 그래야 시간이 지나면 우리는 부끄럽지 않을 것입니다.

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Recently, I received a request from the church I attended as a child in Korea. They are celebrating their 50th anniversary and asked me to record a 20-second congratulatory video. The message came from an older “church sister” I hadn’t heard from in nearly 20 years, and it pulled me back into many memories. Though it could have felt awkward, she is still serving the church as a secretary and is now married to one of my favorite “church brothers.” I remember our pastor back then often saying it was his great hope for people to find their spouses within the church—and their marriage was one of the wonderful fruits of that vision.

She wasn’t asking only me, but also reaching out to other ministers from our church now serving in the United States. Among them, I learned of a woman who was my peer in youth group. She had always loved singing, and many admired her. I last heard she went through hardship in her marriage, but now she has surprisingly entered ministry in the U.S. This unexpected news stirred in me a deeper question: Where does life lead us, and who is guiding the journey?

I realized that perhaps people would also be surprised by my own story. To me, it feels like life is “just happening,” yet in truth, none of us simply live on our own. Life is sustained by the earnest prayers of others, by care and love shown, or even by the joy of being remembered after years of silence.

This reminded me why Paul wrote his letter to the Roman church, a community he had never even met. Churches are built and sustained through someone’s prayer and attention. This is an important lesson in ecclesiology that we must never forget.

Today, too many congregations think only, “As long as our church is doing well, that’s enough.” But that is not the way of Christ. Supporting only the “successful” ministries while neglecting those that struggle is a troubling suggestion I once heard—and I still wrestle with it. After all, who defines what “successful” means? Perhaps those who are struggling most are the very ones who need support.

Our English Ministry recently received $40,000 per year (for three years) from the Korean Ministry Plan (KMP), in addition to $50,000 from the Annual Conference. That totals $90,000 a year in support. While this is generous, funding alone cannot establish a ministry. It requires vision, passion, and the devoted labor of many supporters. These funds represent a trust placed in us, and with that trust comes responsibility to bear fruit beyond ourselves.

Paul asks in today’s passage, “Will you be slaves to sin or to righteousness?” This is also a question about where we will pour out our energy and focus. Will we keep our eyes fixed only on what is immediately in front of us, or will we expand our vision to embrace the greater needs beyond?

When our eyes widen, our work will not be in vain, and our lives will not be marked with shame but with fruit that blesses many.

Where is your heart resting today? Is it limited to what is directly before you, or does it reach farther—to the unseen, the forgotten, the wider body of Christ?

• Pray for ministers and their families serving in hidden and difficult places.

• Pray that new ministries will bear good fruit and overflow into other communities of faith.
