이번주 토요일에 Ari앙상블 공연이 있어요

아, 나는 비참한 사람입니다. 누가 이 죽음의 몸에서 나를 건져 주겠습니까? 우리 주 예수 그리스도를 통하여 나를 건져 주신 하나님께 감사를 드립니다. 그러니 나 자신은, 마음으로는 하나님의 법을 섬기고, 육신으로는 죄의 법을 섬기고 있습니다. (로마서 7:24-25)

교회를 이전하고 보니, 교회를 빌려서 사용하고 싶은 분들이 계세요. 동네분들이 문의하는 분들도 있고, 이런 저런 이벤트를 위해 물어보는 분들도 있습니다. 이번 주 토요일에 Ari라는 앙상블이 처음으로 저희 교회를 빌려서 사용하게 되었습니다. 개인적으로 잘 모르지만, 이 동네 한인분들이 모여서 결성된 앙상블이고 한분이 작곡가이신것 같습니다.

교인분들이 물어보시는 분들이 계세요 "안 와도 되는 거죠?" 교회행사도 벅찬데 다른 행사도 참여하는게 쉽지는 않을 겁니다. 교회를 누군가에게 빌리면 누군가는 문을 열어주고, 누군가는 이분들이 잘 사용하도록 도와야 합니다. 신경쓸께 한두개가 아니겠죠. 아마 이번 토요일에 음악회를 위해 제가 문을 열고 음향을 다루고 영상을 알려줘야할것 같습니다. 선뜻 누구에게 부탁하기에는 우리가 아직 경험이 없기때문에 대체로 이런 경우 목사가 알아서 해야하는 상황이겠죠.

제가 이렇게 말씀드리는 건, 저도 와서 자리를 지키는데 그래도 성도분들 중에 시간이 되시면 음악회라는 품위있는 시간인데 함께하면 좋지 않을까? 해서 독려차원에서 말씀드리는 것입니다. 해가질 무렵에 교회에 와보신분들은 많지 않을거에요. 석양이 질 틈도 없이 어둑해지고, 교회에 마련된 조명이 불을 밝히고 예배당안에 불이 들어오면 정말 운치가 있습니다. 목사 혼자 손님들 앞에서 뻘줌하게(?!)있게 하지 마시고 오셔서 가을을 깊이 느껴보는 시간을 가져보죠. 제가 저녁에 드실 수 있는 간단한 음료를 준비하도록 하겠습니다.

오늘 읽은 본문은 바울의 솔직한 고백입니다. 율법과 믿음을 대조적으로 설명하다보니 율법을 악한것으로 오해하지 말라는 겁니다. 율법을 통해 우리의 죄가 들어나는데, 자신은 그래서 늘 죄에 노출된 자신을 발견한다는 것입니다. 바울정도 되면, 자기고백을 하지 않아도 될것 같은데 바울은 기꺼이 율법을 설명하기 위해 율법의 순기능을 이야기합니다. 율법을 통해 우리는 무엇이 죄인가를 깨닫게된다고 합니다. 그런데 이런 깨달음으로 죄에서 자유로울수 없는 한계를 느낀다는 거죠. 그래서 바울은 "믿음으로" 즉 하나님의 전적인 은혜로 이 죄가 용서되는 것이니 율법은 오히려 자신이 큰 죄인이라는 것을 알게하는 정도에서 멈춘다는 뜻입니다.

저의 솔직한 고백도 이렇습니다. 이번주 토요일에 아무도 안오시면 저 혼자 쑥스럽습니다.

묵상

율법으로 드러난 죄는 하나님의 은혜로 용서되어진다는 것을 어떻게 이해할 수 있을까요? 우리는 하나님의 전적인 은혜로 이미 용서받았습니다. (먼저베푸신 은혜) 그리고 그것이 바로 하나님의 은혜임을 깨닫고 그 은혜로 인해 죄에서 자유함을 고백합니다.(은혜위에 은혜)

Romans 7:24–25“Ah, what a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in my sinful nature a slave to the law of sin.”

Since we moved into the new church building, there have been people who want to rent the space. Some are neighbors asking out of curiosity, others inquire to hold various events. This Saturday, for the first time, an ensemble called Ari will be renting and using our church. I don’t personally know them well, but I hear it’s a group formed by local Koreans, and one of them is even a composer.

Some of our church members have been asking me, “We don’t have to come, right?” Understandably, with all of our own church activities already keeping us busy, it’s not always easy to attend extra events. Still, when we rent out the church, someone has to open the doors, make sure things go smoothly, and support them with what they need. There are always details to take care of. This Saturday, I’ll likely be the one to open up, handle the sound system, and show them how to use the video setup. In these early stages, before we have more experience, it often falls on the pastor to take care of these things.

I share this because I will be there anyway, and I think it would be wonderful if some of you could also come. It will be a refined event, a concert, and I believe it could be a meaningful time together. Many of you haven’t seen the church at dusk. The sun sets quickly, the sanctuary lights come on, and it creates a very special atmosphere. Please don’t leave your pastor standing awkwardly alone in front of guests—let’s gather together and enjoy the beauty of autumn in this setting. I will prepare some simple evening refreshments for you to enjoy.

Today’s passage is Paul’s honest confession. While contrasting the law and faith, Paul makes clear that the law itself is not evil. Rather, the law exposes our sin, showing us our true selves. Paul, even as a great apostle, admits that through the law he continually discovers his sinful nature. If anyone didn’t need to make such confessions, surely it was Paul—but he willingly does so to help us understand the positive role of the law: it reveals what sin is.

Yet at the same time, he also realizes the law cannot free him from sin. That freedom comes only “by faith”—through God’s grace alone. The law’s role ends at revealing that we are sinners; salvation comes only by God’s grace.

My own honest confession is this: if no one comes this Saturday, I’ll feel a little embarrassed standing there alone!

Meditation

How can we understand that the sins revealed by the law are forgiven by God’s grace? We have already been forgiven—purely by God’s grace given first. And when we recognize that forgiveness itself as grace, we are able to confess that we are free from sin. Grace upon grace.

Intercessory Prayer

1. The way for Open Church to grow is through prayer—prayer that leads to being filled with the Holy Spirit, and through the Spirit, the bold sharing of the gospel. Let us remember this simple principle and keep praying with strength.
