Romans 8:1–11, September 19, 2025 (Friday), 로마서 8 : 1~11, 2025.09.19 (금)

1그러므로 그리스도 예수 안에 있는 사람들은 정죄를 받지 않습니다. 2그것은, 그리스도 예수 안에서 생명을 누리게 하는 성령의 법이 당신을 죄와 죽음의 법에서 해방하여 주었기 때문입니다. (로마서 8:1-2)

어제 교회 사무실에 누가 문을 두두렸습니다. 동네분인데 예전에 교회에서 요가를 교실을 운영했던 분입니다. 교회를 둘러보게 해달라고 해서 보여드렸더니 많이 바뀌것에 놀라셨습니다. 어린이집이 문을 닫은 것도 몰랐고, 매주일마다 차가 꽉 차 있는 것에 늘 놀라고 있다고 이야기 하십니다.

예전에는 교인이 10명도 되지 않았고, 그중에 연락되는 분이 없다고 합니다. 이 분은 교회에서 요가교실을 계속 하고 싶다고 해서 자세히 이메일을 보내라고 말씀드렸습니다.(여전히 이분은 저희 교회 메인 열쇠를 가지고 있다고 하네요) 돌아가기전에 저희교회 사택근처에 자신이 살고 있다고 이야기하십니다. 그리고 매번 이웃들이 사택의 잔디를 깎아내고, 나무 가지를 쳐내고 있다고 이야기하십니다. 그중에 한분은 오린다 경찰이고 매번 잔디 깎는 기계로 사택을 관리해주신다고 합니다. 아마 가만히 두고 보고 없을 정도로 엉망으로 풀이 자라니 동네분들이 손을 벋고 나선것입니다.

그분에게 저희가 몰랐으니 꼭 그분을 뵈면 고맙다고 전해달라고 했습니다. 그리고 저희도 곧 대책을 세워서 관리를 잘하도록 하겠다고 말씀드렸습니다. 때가 되면 감사의 표시를 하겠다고 말씀드렸습니다. 잠깐이지만 많이 창피했습니다. 동네 분들이 여기 새로 이사한 교회의 사택인것을 다 알고 있는데 신경을 쓰지 않은 것에 대한 미안함도 있고, 그냥 내버려두기에는 그만큼 엉망으로 관리했으니 미쳐 신경을 쓰지 않은것에 거기까지 생각이 미치지 않은 자책을 하게되었습니다.

교회는 공동체입니다. 때로는 개인의 얼굴이 드러나는 것처럼 보이지만, 사실 전체를 보게됩니다. 가장 크게는 기독교를, 점점 줄여나가면 감리교회를 한인교회를 그리고 열린교회를 동네분들이 보고 있는 것입니다. 교회는 신경을 쓰려고 애를 쓰는데 사택에 신경을 쓰지 못한건 여러가지 이유가 있겠지만, 우리가 아직 그런 역량이 되지 못해서 그럴수 있다는 생각도 들었습니다. 연락을 받지 못한것도 아니었습니다. 아마 연회에 직접 연락을 했었고, 언젠가 감리사님이 이야기하신것 같습니다. 저도 그 이야기를 교인들과 나눈것 같은데 구체적으로 어떤대책을 세워야할지 이야기를 나누지 못했습니다. 우리는 동네에 큰 빚을 진것 같습니다.

이렇게 까지 생각할 필요가 있을까? 싶겠지만, 우리의 생각이 우리를 만들어간다는 것을 기억해야합니다. 육신에 따른 생각만 하면 그 안에서 삶이 살고, 성령안에 살려고 하면 성령의 능력으로 세상을 살아갈 수 있습니다. 바울이 이 이야기를 오늘 본문에서 나누면서 성령안에 있으니 더이상 죄에 묶여있지 않고, 생명가운데 살아가는 우리들에 대해서 이야기하고 있습니다.

묵상

마음을 두는 곳에 물질도 있고, 에너지도 있고, 힘도 거기에 쏟게 되어 있습니다. 어디에 마음을 두고 있는지 오늘 깊이 생각해봐야할것 같습니다.

중보기도

1. 열린교회가 더욱 넓은 생각, 너머의 생각, 큰 생각으로 사역하기를 그리고 바라기는 한인교회에서 지역교회로 좋은 공동체로 자리하기를 위해서 기도해주세오.

2. 내일 Ari 앙상블의 공연이 있습니다. 한인들인데 전부 줄리어드를 졸업했다고 하네요. 어제 어떤 분이 전화를 주셔서 잘 알려주셨습니다. 우리는 잘 몰라도 이 지역에서 잘 알려진 앙상블이라고 합니다.

3. 이번 주일은 "예레미야 18:19-19:1"말씀을 나눕니다. 말씀 제목은 "내 마음이 병들어 시름합니다"라는 제목으로 전합니다. 주일예배를 위해서 기도해주세요.

4. 내일 새벽예배, 현장과 줌으로 함께하실수 있습니다. 기도와 성령충만으로 교회는 든든히 세워집니다.

Yesterday, someone knocked on the church office door. It was a neighbor, a person who used to run a yoga class at our church. She asked if she could look around the church, so I showed her. She was surprised at how much it had changed. She didn’t even know that the daycare center had closed, and she said she was always amazed at how full the parking lot is every Sunday.

She told me that in the past there were fewer than ten members, and none of them are in touch anymore. She expressed interest in running a yoga class again at the church, so I told her to send a detailed email. (Apparently, she still has the church’s main key!) Before she left, she mentioned that she lives near the church parsonage. She also told me that neighbors regularly mow the parsonage lawn and trim the trees. One of them, she said, is an Orinda police officer, and he personally takes care of the yard with his lawn mower. It seems the place had become so overgrown that the neighbors felt compelled to step in and take care of it.

I asked her to please pass along our thanks if she sees them, since we hadn’t known. I also told her that we would soon make a plan to take better care of the property ourselves, and that in due time we would show our appreciation. Still, I felt very embarrassed. The neighbors all know that the parsonage belongs to the new church in town, yet we had neglected it. I felt sorry for that, and guilty for leaving it so unmanaged that the neighbors had to step in.

The church is a community. Sometimes it may look like just one person’s face is visible, but in truth, people see the whole. On the broadest level, they see Christianity, then the Methodist Church, then the Korean church, and finally, Yeolin Church. Though we try to take care of church matters, neglecting the parsonage may have many reasons—but I thought perhaps it is simply because we do not yet have the capacity to manage everything. It wasn’t that we never heard anything about it. I believe the conference was contacted directly, and I recall the district superintendent mentioning it at some point. I even think I shared that with the congregation, but we never discussed concrete measures. It feels as though we owe a debt to our neighbors.

Perhaps you might say, “Isn’t this thinking too much?” But we must remember—our thoughts shape who we become. If we live according to the flesh, our lives will stay bound there. But if we live according to the Spirit, we can live with the power of the Spirit. Paul, in today’s text, speaks about this: we are no longer bound by sin, but live in life through the Spirit.

Meditation

Where we set our hearts, there also will our resources, our energy, and our strength be poured out. Today, we must deeply reflect on where our hearts are truly set.

Intercessory Prayer

1. Pray that Yeolin Church may grow with broader vision, greater perspective, and deeper faith, becoming a strong and good community—not only as a Korean church but as a church rooted in the local community.

2. Tomorrow, the Ari Ensemble will perform. They are Korean musicians, all graduates of Juilliard. Someone kindly called yesterday to let me know. Even though we may not be familiar with them, they are well-known in this region.

3. This Sunday, we will reflect on Jeremiah 8:19–9:1, under the sermon title “My Heart is Sick and Faint.” Please pray for the Sunday service.

4. Tomorrow’s dawn prayer service will be held both in person and on Zoom. Through prayer and the fullness of the Spirit, the church is built up strong.
