이것은 곧 육신의 자녀가 하나님의 자녀가 되는 것이 아니라, 약속의 자녀가 참 자손으로 여겨지리라는 것을 뜻합니다 (로마서 9:8)

어제 버클리가 진앙지로 지진이 있었습니다. 새벽 2시30분쯤으로 기억나는데 잠결에 큰 충격소리가 났고, 본능적으로 창문을 열어서 밖을 확인하고 아이를 확인하고는 다시 잠들었습니다. 진앙지가 버클리여서 큰 소리만 났지 진동은 크지 않았는데 아마 주변 다른 도시들에는 큰 진동이 느껴진것 같습니다. 4.5정도 였으니 꽤 큰 지진이었던 것 같습니다.

캘리포니아에 살면 지진은 익숙합니다. 기억나는 지진부터 짧고 간결하게 느꼈던 것들은 기억도 나지않습니다. 이번에는 제가 살고 있는 동네가 진앙지라는 것에 오랫동안 기억이 날것 같습니다. 잠을 설치고는 아침에 여러통의 문자를 받았습니다. 아마 다들 지진을 느끼고 뉴스를 확인하고 버클리에 살고 있는 저희 가족을 걱정하며 보낸 메시지입니다.

지진은 놀래켰지만, 서로를 생각하는 마음은 따뜻했습니다. 무엇이든 동전의 양면처럼 어둡고 밝고 두렵고 위로가 되고가 함께 동행하는 것 같습니다.

바울은 유대인이면서 이방인을 전도하는 사도로 잘 알려져있습니다. 그렇다고 유대인들을 무시했을까? 그렇지 않고 유대인들을 향한 개인의 애정과 기대 그리고 아쉬움을 오늘 본문에 잘 드러내고 있습니다. 에서와 야곱의 선택에 대한 바울의 이해는 세상의 율법이 세상을 움직이는 것이 아니라 하나님의 자유로운 선택과 뜻이 이루어짐에 대해서 바울은 이야기합니다.

삶은 갑작스러움과 계획한 것이 함께 동행합니다. 계획한대로 삶은 살아지는 것처럼 보이지만, 갑작스러운것을 반응하고 해결하며 삶은 살아지는 것 같다는 생각이 듭니다. 예상한것은 빗나가고, 예상치 못한 것을 통해 일이 진행되는 것을 보게됩니다.

저 사람은 분명히 잘 하낼것이라는 기대를 하지만, 하나님은 예상치 못한 연약한 자를 들어서 사용하시는 것을 확인합니다.

바울의 고백처럼 하나님의 자유로운 선택을 통해 뜻은 이루어진다는 것을 기억한다면 우리는 좀더 유연하게 삶이 주는 풍요로움에 마음을 넓힐 수 있을 것 같습니다. 사실 바울은 유대인들이 지닌 선입관 또는 유연하지 않은 생각들을 보기좋게 하나님이 뛰어넘으신다는 것을 경험하고 설명하려고 노력한것 같습니다.

신앙, 복음, 예수를 믿는 것은 하나님이 마련한 무한대적인 선택에 우리들의 삶이 맡겨지는 것입니다. 그러니 부지런히 쫓아가아할것 같습니다. 하나님은 오늘도 이렇게 역사하시고 우리를 불러내십니다.

하나님의 자유로운 선택과 뜻을 이루어가시는 것에 우리는 어떤 응답을 할 수 있을까요

"This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are God's children, but it is the children of the promise who are regarded as Abraham's offspring." (Romans 9:8)

Yesterday, an earthquake struck with its epicenter in Berkeley. I remember being jolted awake around 2:30 a.m. by a loud, rumbling sound. Instinctively, I opened the window to look outside, checked on my child's safety, and then returned to bed. Since the epicenter was right here in Berkeley, the noise was pronounced, though the shaking itself wasn't severe in my area—I imagine residents of nearby cities felt stronger tremors. At magnitude 4.5, it was a fairly significant quake.

Living in California makes earthquakes a familiar part of life. The smaller ones barely register in memory anymore. But since this one originated in the very town where I live, it will likely remain with me longer. After a restless night, I woke to several text messages from friends who had either felt the earthquake or seen the news, reaching out with concern for my family here in Berkeley.

While the quake startled me, the warm concern of others brought comfort. As with many experiences in life, it reminded me that darkness and light, fear and encouragement, often walk hand in hand.

Paul is renowned as the apostle who brought the gospel to the Gentiles, yet he never abandoned his concern for his fellow Jews. Today's passage reflects his deep personal affection, longing, and sorrow for his own people. In reflecting on the story of Esau and Jacob, Paul emphasizes that the world is not ultimately governed by law or human merit, but by God's sovereign will and gracious choice.

Life, too, is a mixture of the sudden and the planned. We may believe we live according to our carefully laid plans, but in reality we are constantly responding to the unexpected. Anticipated outcomes may crumble, while unforeseen events propel life in new directions.

We often place our confidence in those we expect to succeed, but God frequently works through those who appear weak or unlikely. If we remember, as Paul affirms, that God's sovereign choice accomplishes His purposes, then perhaps we can embrace life's abundance with more open and flexible hearts. Paul himself sought to demonstrate that God overcomes human prejudice and rigid thinking in surprising and gracious ways.

Faith, the gospel, and believing in Jesus means entrusting our lives to God's boundless initiative and sovereign choice. Therefore, we are called to follow faithfully. God continues His work today, calling us forward.
