하나님께서 모세에게 말씀하시기를 “내가 긍휼히 여길 사람을 긍휼히 여기고, 불쌍히 여길 사람을 불쌍히 여기겠다” 하셨습니다. 그러므로 그것은 사람의 의지나 노력에 달려 있는 것이 아니라, 하나님의 자비에 달려 있습니다. (로마서 9:15-16)

어제가 아마 올해 들어 가장 더운날이 아니었나 싶습니다. 왠만하면 에어컨을 키지 않는데 사무실에 에어컨을 키고 일을 해야할 정도로 뜨거웠던것 같습니다. 이런날은 그냥 근처 카페에서 일을 해야겠다는 생각을 하면서 기다렸던 복사기 토너를 받아들고는 그래도 교회 사무실에 있어야 하는 이유를 찾은듯 마음을 달래며 일을 마무리 했습니다.

일찍 장로님 내외가 교회에 페스트 컨트롤을 하고 가셨습니다. 계절이 바뀔때마다 다양한 곤충, 특히 거미가 많다보니 어느정도 관리가 필요하다고 생각하셔 약을 치고는 시간이 지나서 문을 활짝 열어두라고 하셔서 문을 열었더니 열기가 순식간에 실내온도를 집어삼키는 것처럼 느껴졌습니다.

집에 돌아와서 뜨겁게 데워진 2층에는 올라갈 엄두를 내지 않고 1층 거실에서 더위를 식혔으니 아마 다른 분들도 비슷한 하루가 아니었을까? 싶습니다. 하루를 마무리 하면서 계속 날씨를 신경써보기는 처음입니다. 참 좋은 날씨를 가진 동네에 사는 것을 자랑하며 살다가 한번 더운것에 이리 호들갑을 떠는 것을 보면서 사람의 생각과 마음은 늘 널뛰기 뛰든 작은 것에도 이렇게 번잡스럽다는 생각이 들었습니다.

그 많은날 중에 하루에 이렇게 힘을 빼는 것을 보면, 아무리 좋은 것을 늘 경험하고 살아도 고맙고 감사한줄 모르다. 한번에 모든 것을 불평하는 것은 성경에 기록된 많은 인물들이 왜그럴까?란 질문에 적당한 답이라는 생각이 들었습니다.

오늘 본문에서 바울은 사람들의 일반적인 태도를 지적합니다. 자기들에게 벌어지는 것을 보면서 "하나님이 불의하시다!"라는 질문에 바울은 그렇지 않다고 이야기합니다. "그렇다면 하나님이 왜 책망하시냐?"라고 묻는 자들에게 바울은 하나님의 긍휼은 하나님의 주권에 달린것이지 이것이 왜 나에게 없는가?라는 불평을 할 필요가 없다고 합니다. 하나님은 심판을 준비하시는 것 같지만 동시에 긍휼을 예비하시는 분이라는 것이 바울이 이해한 하나님의 성품입니다. 지난번에 토기쟁이 이야기처럼 하나님은 결국 늘 우리를 심판으로 다루셔도 그것이 필요해서 그런것이지 결국 긍휼로 세워가신다는 것입니다.

참 어렵습니다. 문장으로는 이해되는데 기왕이면 늘 긍휼함으로 대해주시지 그런 마음입니다. 한번 더위에 이런 저런 불편함을 투덜대는 것을 보면서 우리들은 늘 만족이라는 것을 모르고 더 좋은 것을 추구하는 것에 익숙하다는 생각에 오늘 하루는 깊은 침묵과 돌아봄으로 하루를 보내야할것 같습니다. 쉽지 않은 것은 어쩌면 늘 긴장하고 생각나는 대로 살지 말고 생각하며 살라는 의미인듯 합니다.

God said to Moses, “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.” Therefore, it does not depend on human desire or effort, but on God’s mercy. (Romans 9:15–16)

Yesterday was probably the hottest day of the year so far. I usually avoid turning on the air conditioner, but it was so hot that I had to work with it running in the office. On a day like that, I thought it might be better to work in a nearby café. Yet, when I finally received the toner I had been waiting for, I found comfort in staying at the church office and reminded myself why I needed to be there.

Early in the day, one of our elders and his wife came to the church for pest control. With the change of seasons, many insects appear, especially spiders, so they thought it was necessary to spray. They told me to leave the door wide open afterward, but when I did, it felt like the scorching heat instantly swallowed up the entire room.

When I returned home, I couldn’t bear to go upstairs because it was so hot, so I stayed in the first-floor living room to cool down. I imagine many others had a similar day. It was the first time I found myself paying so much attention to the weather, just to get through the day. Living in a place that usually boasts such wonderful weather, I had been proud of that, but after experiencing one hot day, I found myself complaining. It reminded me how quickly our thoughts and hearts swing back and forth, easily disturbed by the smallest things.

Looking at how easily I spent so much energy on just one hot day, I realized: no matter how much good we experience in life, we often fail to be grateful. At once, we complain about everything. This seems to be a fitting answer to the question, “Why did so many figures in the Bible act this way?”

In today’s passage, Paul points out this common human attitude. As people face challenges, they ask, “Is God unjust?” But Paul insists, “By no means.” And to those who ask, “Then why does God still blame us?” Paul responds that God’s mercy depends entirely on His sovereignty, not on our complaints about why we lack it. Paul’s understanding of God’s nature is that, though God may prepare some for judgment, He simultaneously prepares others for mercy. Just like the story of the potter, even when God deals with us through judgment, it is because it is necessary—and ultimately, He builds us up through mercy.

This is a difficult truth. In words, it makes sense, but I can’t help but feel, “Wouldn’t it be better if He always dealt with us in mercy?” As I caught myself grumbling about the heat and other inconveniences, I realized that we are always restless, never satisfied, always accustomed to seeking better things. Perhaps today should be spent in deep silence and reflection, instead of constant striving. It may not be easy, but maybe this difficulty is God’s way of reminding us not to live reactively to every impulse, but to live thoughtfully and prayerfully.
