Romans 9:25–33, September 25, 2025 (Thursday), 로마서 9 : 25~33, 2025.09.25 (목)

그것은 성경에 기록한 바와 같습니다. “보아라, 내가 시온에, 부딪치는 돌과 걸려 넘어지게 하는 바위를 둔다. 그러나 그를 믿는 사람은 부끄러움을 당하지 않을 것이다.” (로마서 9:33)

밤에 내린 빗소리에 잠을 설쳤습니다. 제법 많은 비가 내리는 소리에 아직 비가올때가 아닌데 라는 생각하며 잠을 계속청했는데 비가 내린 길을 달리는 자동차 소리에 잠을 이룰수가 없었습니다. 예민해서 그런것이리기 보다는 비가 오는 것에 대한 생각, 왜 지금 비가 올까? 아직 10월도 되지 않았는데 라는 단순한 질문과 생각이 오가면서 그리된것 같습니다.

아침에 무거운 몸을 일으키고는 밤새온 이메일을 확인하고 컴퓨터에 앉아서 늘 하던 대로 성경을 읽고 아침묵상을 쓰려고 하는데 약간의 무기력함이 몰려왔습니다. 멍하니 왜 그럴까 생각해보니, 역시 잠을 설치면 다른 일상생활에 영향을 미친다는 것을 새삼 깨달았습니다. 좀더 자자 하는 마음이 일상을 붙들고 잠을 잘 못잤다는 생각에 머리는 깨어나지 않은 것 같으니 이런 생각들이 더 몸과 마음을 느리게 하는 것 같다는 생각이 들었습니다.

잠이 중요하다고들 하는데, 이건 저에게 오늘은 다르게 들렸습니다. 결국 가장 기본적인것이 중요하다. 기본이 흐트러지면 다른 것도 다 흐트러지고 제대로 뭔가를 세워갈 수 없다는 생각이 들었습니다.

바울은 이방인에게 복음을 전하면서 그 정당성을 전하기 위해 노력합니다. 그 노력중에 가장 빛나는 것은 결국 가장 기본적인 하나님의 이해였습니다. 구원은 하나님의 주권이다! 가장 기본적인 이 고백은 유대인들이 율법으로 자랑하던것을 부끄럽게 하고, 이방인들에게까지 하나님의 구원이 확장된다는 것을 바울은 정리하고 전하는데 힘을 씁니다. 믿음으로 구원에 이른다는 이신칭의 교리를 만드러낸것도 사실 하나님의 가장 기본적인 속성을 잘 이해해서 만들어진 것입니다.

아브라함은 하나님의 부르심을 믿어서 의롭게 되었고, 절대로 행위로 의를 성취하지 않았다는 것, 그리고 이모든 것은 하나님의 선택과 은혜를 통해 이루어진다는 것을 바울은 로마교회에 알리면서 가장 기본적인 하나님의 행위 그 열심에 대해서 이야기하고 있습니다.

기본적인 것이 잘 세워져야 그 다음을 잘 세워갈 수 있습니다.

2. 열린교회의 부흥을 기대하고 소망하는 분들이 늘어났으면 좋겠어요. 가장 기본적인것이 잘 세워지는 교회가 되어야 하겠다는 마음입니다. 위해서 기도해주세요

“See, I lay in Zion a stone that causes people to stumble and a rock that makes them fall,and the one who believes in him will never be put to shame.” (Romans 9:33)

Last night, I couldn’t sleep well because of the sound of rain.It rained quite heavily, and I kept thinking, “It’s not even the rainy season yet, why is it raining now?” As cars drove down the wet roads, their sounds kept me from finding rest. It wasn’t so much that I was being sensitive; rather, my mind was filled with simple questions and thoughts about the rain—why now, why before October—and those restless thoughts kept me awake.

In the morning, I got up with a heavy body, checked the emails that had come overnight, and sat down to read Scripture and write my morning devotion as usual. But a kind of weariness swept over me. As I sat there blankly, I realized again that a night of poor sleep does affect the rest of daily life. The thought “I didn’t sleep enough” lingered, and that in turn slowed my body and mind even more.

People often say that sleep is important, but today that truth struck me differently. The most basic things are truly the most important. If the basics are shaken, then everything else becomes shaky too, and nothing can be built up properly.

When Paul preached the gospel to the Gentiles, he worked hard to show its legitimacy. The shining center of his argument was nothing other than the most basic understanding of God: Salvation belongs to God’s sovereignty! This foundational confession humbled the Jews who boasted in the law, while also proclaiming that salvation extended even to the Gentiles. The doctrine of justification by faith—that we are made righteous not by works but by faith—was born from grasping this very essence of God’s nature.

Abraham was considered righteous because he believed God’s call; he never achieved righteousness by works. Paul wanted the church in Rome to understand that everything was accomplished by God’s choice and grace. It is all about the zeal of God’s own action.

Unless the basics are firmly set, nothing else can be properly built.

1. Many people have been asking about the time of the Meeting Choir performance this Saturday. It begins at 6:30 p.m. The program has been thoughtfully prepared. It will be a time not only to enjoy a good performance but also to deepen our understanding of Nepal mission.

2. I pray that more and more people will come to hope and long for the revival of Yeolin Church. May we become a church where the basics are firmly set. Please pray for this.
