그 날이 오면, 말방울에까지 ‘주님께 거룩하게 바친 것’이라고 새겨져 있을 것이며, 주님의 성전 안에 있는 모든 솥이, 제단 앞에 있는 그릇들과 같이 거룩하게 될 것이다 (스가랴 14:20)

오늘은 할로윈데이죠, 매년 점점 화려해지는 할로윈장식들을 보면 진심으로 느껴지는 미국사람들의 할로윈 사랑을 엿볼 수 있습니다. 아직도 저에게는 어색한 시간이긴한데 다른 이유는 없고 아이들이 커가면서 자연스럽게 느슨해진것 같습니다.

옆집 아저씨는 이날을 진심을 다해 준비합니다. 노모를 모시고 밖에 테이블을 깔고는 아이들에게 사탕을 나눠주는 것을 큰 낙으로 여기는 것 같습니다.

오늘 아들은 학교를 가지 않습니다. Teacher's Day라고 학교를 쉬는데 친구들과 할로윈 파티를 가야한다고 합니다. 나름 고민한 컨셉을 잡고는 이런 저런 꾸님으로 보여줍니다. 어느 에니메이션 케릭터를 코스프레하는 것 같은데 공원에 모여서 친구들과 파티를 한다는데 이제 자기 스스로 할로윈을 준비하고 계획하는 것을 보면, 영락없는 미국애(?!)된것 같다는 생각이 듭니다.

이런 시즌에 맞춰서 교회도 나름대로 행사들을 준비합니다. 눈코뜰새없는 빡빡한 일정을 준비하고는 대림절기를 준비하며 가장 고요하고 거룩한 시간을 준비합니다. 단것에 하이퍼된 아이들에게 나름 예수님이 이땅에 오심을 기다리는 시간을 마주해야하고, 교회는 이럴때 최선을 다해 성탄 장식과 성탄행사를 준비합니다.

할로윈장식은 점점 화려해지고, 성탄장식은 점점 사그러 들어가는 것 같은 시기를 사는 것 같은 요즘, 올해는 좀 힘을 내서 성탄장식을 했으면 하는 바램입니다. 교회가 가장 최선을 다해 빛을 내는 시간이라는 점을 기억한다면 우리는 이 시간을 넘어 더 화려하고 감격적인 성탄을 기다림을 표현하는데 힘을 써야 합니다.

오늘 본문은 남은자들에 대한 축복입니다. 아무리 어려운 상황에서도 하나님을 잊어버리지 않고 하나님의 손길을 소망하는 자들을 향해 예배회복에 대해서 선언하고 있습니다.

어제 뉴스에 미국에 점점 종교적 영향력이 커지고 있다는 설문 조사가 나왔습니다. 교회의 예배회복을 위해 우리들은 전례없는 노력과 헌신이 필요한 시기입니다. 어느때보다 힘을 내서 회복을 위해 노력해야합니다. 세상속에 우리들의 빛이 얼마나 밝은지 드러내야합니다.

Today is Halloween. Each year, as I watch the decorations grow more elaborate, I can truly feel how deeply Americans cherish this holiday. It still feels somewhat unfamiliar to me—though perhaps that's because, as my child has grown, I've naturally relaxed about it.

My next-door neighbor takes this day very seriously. He sets up a table outside with his elderly mother and joyfully hands out candy to passing children—it's one of his favorite days of the year.

My son has no school today—it's Teacher's Day—and he's planning to attend a Halloween party with friends. He carefully selected his costume, showing me his outfit with obvious pride. I believe it's a character from some anime. Watching him prepare and make his own plans, I realize he's becoming every bit the "American kid."

This season is also when churches begin preparing their own events. Amid the busyness, we start turning our attention toward Advent—the quiet and holy time of waiting for Christ's coming. Even as children buzz with sugar-fueled excitement, we seek to guide them into the spirit of anticipating Jesus. Churches work diligently to decorate, prepare, and create space for joy and wonder.

It often feels as though Halloween decorations grow brighter while Christmas lights dim a little more each year. I hope this year we can reverse that trend—let's shine brighter! If we remember that this is the season when the Church should radiate its light most brilliantly, we can prepare together for a more radiant and deeply meaningful Christmas.

Today's passage speaks of blessing upon the remnant—those who never forgot God even in hardship, those who continued hoping for His restoring hand. It offers a vision of worship restored and holiness permeating everything, down to the horse bells and cooking pots.

Yesterday, a news survey indicated that religious influence is actually growing again in America. This is a time when the Church must renew its worship with unprecedented effort and devotion. Now more than ever, we must let the light of our faith shine brightly in this world.

1. Please pray for those struggling with illness. Let's especially lift up Yejun, who is being monitored for one more day before doctors decide whether surgery will be needed.

2. Let us also remember our upcoming gatherings: Dinner Church – November 1 at 4:00 PM / Charge Conference – November 1 at 7:30 PM. Let's keep these in prayer and gather together faithfully.
