도성 시온아, 크게 기뻐하여라. 도성 예루살렘아, 환성을 올려라. 네 왕이 네게로 오신다. 그는 공의로우신 왕, 구원을 베푸시는 왕이시다. 그는 온순하셔서, 나귀 곧 나귀 새끼인 어린 나귀를 타고 오신다.(스가랴 9:9)

시간을 무리하게 거스리며 살다보니, 잠자는게 뒤죽박죽입니다. 어제는 잘잔듯한데 아침에 일어나기 힘들었습니다. 바쁘게 움직여야 시차가 금방 적응된다고 하니 기대를 하며 분주하게 움직여 보려고 합니다.

어떤분이 Viva La Church를 왜 간것인가?에 대해서 궁금해하십니다. 일단 두달전에 연회에서 후원받는 교회(저희는 디너처치로 연회에서 지원금을 받아요)는 무조건 가야한다고 연락이 왔고, 이번에 다녀와야 내년에 다시 펀드를 신청할 수 있다고 이야기해서 다녀왔습니다.

이런 조건으로 가니 별로 기대를 하지 않았는데 꽤 의미있고 감동적인 이야기들을 많이 들었습니다. 일단 이게 특별할까 싶지만, Vival La Church가 교회여 일어나라!라는 뜻인데 서부지역에서 최근 10여년 이상 들어보지 못한 구호여서 흥미로웠고, 결국 교회가 살아나야 연회도 교단도 살아난다는 문제에 봉착했다는 생각이 들었습니다. 이말은 앞으로 서부지역의 리더는 교회성장에 관심을 갖지 않으면 안되는 시간을 맞이하게 되었다는 뜻이기도 합니다.

개인적으로 이런 움직임에 반가웠습니다. 교회가 든든하지 않으면 다른 사역에 쏟아부을 에너지는 줄어들기 마련입니다. 우리들이 왜 매주일 교회사역에 집중하고 사역을 준비하고 이런 저런 계획을 세워가며 목회하는 이유가 이제는 (놀랍지만) 모두의 관심이 되었다는 것은 좋은 사인이라는 생각이 들었습니다.

조심스럽게 앞으로 10년의 키워드는 "교회성장"이 공시적으로 연회와 서부지역 교단 전체에 키워드가 될것이라는 생각이 들었습니다.

그러면 무조건 교회성장을 외치면 성장이 될까?

오늘 읽은 스가랴는 전쟁이 아닌 평화의 왕으로 오실 겸손한 왕으로 메시아가 오실것으로 예언합니다. 포로된 자를 해방하고, 회복과 영광을 누리는 구원의 비전을 선포하는 메시아가 오신다는 기대는 스가랴의 마주한 현실과는 맞지 않은 예언입니다. 세상을 흔들어놓으실 분은 힘있고 전쟁을 무력화할 파괴적인 힘을 보여주셔야하는데 오히려 겸손한 평화의 왕을 기대한다는 것은 사람들의 기대와 다른 아니 경험해보지 않은 힘을 가진 메시야를 소망해야한다는 것입니다.

교회성장을 꿈꾸는 것도 마찬가지입니다. 교회가 성장한다는 것은 교회성장이라는 구호와 여러가지 방법이 쏟아진다는 것을 의미하는 것이 아니라 교회의 회복을 위해 종된 그리스도인의 헌신과 겸손함으로 세워져가는 것입니다.

디테일하게 최선을 다해야하고, 여기서 말하는 최선은 생각한 것보다 더 열심히 해야하고, 이렇게까지 해야하나? 싶을 정도로 최선을 다하려고 노력하면 그에 맞는 열매를 주시는데 그 열매를 잘 익게 만들려면 겸손과 회복을 꿈꿨던 스가랴의 간절함의 마음또한 필요합니다.

방법은 완전할 수 없고, 겸손을 통해 채워가시는 하나님의 능력을 소망해야한다는 뜻입니다.

최선을 다해 열심히 한다는 정도가 어느 정도를 이야기하는 것일까요?

1. 최선을 다해 열린교회 사역을 함께할 수 있는 동역자들이 늘어나기를 소망합니다. 그러면 열린교회는 많은 열매를 경험할것입니다. 이를 위해 지나칠정도로 최선을 다하는 동역자가 함께하도록 기도해주세요.

2. 내일은 여선교회 찬양제가 산타클라라교회에서 있습니다. 모두가 기쁘고 감사한시간이 될 수 있도록 기도해주세요! 주일예배도 하나님의 은혜가 가득 경험되어지는 예배가 될수 있도록 기도해주세요.

"Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey." (Zechariah 9:9)

Reflection

Living against the rhythm of time has turned my sleep schedule upside down. Although I slept well last night, waking up this morning was still a struggle. They say the best way to overcome jet lag is to stay active, so I'm trying to move through the day with hopeful energy.

Someone recently asked me why I attended Viva La Church. About two months ago, our Conference informed all churches receiving grants—including ours for the Dinner Church ministry—that attendance was mandatory for those wishing to reapply for next year's funding. So I went simply out of obligation.

Yet to my surprise, it turned out to be deeply meaningful. The name Viva La Church means "Church, arise!"—a cry we haven't heard in the western region of the UMC for over a decade. It was refreshing to hear this call again, reminding us that if the Church does not come alive, neither the Conference nor the denomination can truly live. It signals a shift—that leaders in the western region must now care deeply about church growth.

Personally, I found this movement encouraging. When the Church is not healthy and strong, our energy for other forms of ministry inevitably diminishes. The fact that both pastors and lay leaders are beginning to recognize that faithful ministry preparation, weekly worship, and leadership planning are essential to the Church's life—this is, in itself, a sign of hope.

Cautiously, I sense that over the next decade, "Church Growth" will become a central and prominent theme throughout our Conference and the western region of our denomination.

The Word Today

But can a church grow simply by proclaiming "Church Growth"? Zechariah gives us a very different picture. He proclaims the coming of a humble King—one who brings peace, not war; one who frees captives, restores what was lost, and offers a vision of salvation that defies worldly logic. To the people of Zechariah's day, this prophecy made little sense. They expected a conquering hero who would overthrow empires, yet God promised a King who would reign through humility and peace.

In the same way, the true growth of the Church does not come through slogans or strategies alone. It begins with the humble and faithful devotion of those who serve Christ as His servants. Growth takes shape when we give our utmost—when we push beyond comfort and convenience, even to the point of asking, "Do I really have to go this far?" God blesses such efforts with fruit, but to see that fruit ripen beautifully, we must also nurture it with the same humility and hope that filled Zechariah's heart.

Our methods may be imperfect, but we trust in the power of God, who perfects our efforts through His grace.

How far does "doing our best" really go? What does it mean, in our daily lives, to give our utmost for God's work?

Intercessory Prayer

1. Let us pray that more coworkers will join us in serving the ministries of Yeolin Church with wholehearted dedication. When we work together—even beyond what seems reasonable—the church will surely bear abundant fruit.

2. Please also pray for tomorrow's Women's Mission Choir Festival at Santa Clara UMC—that it will be a joyful and grace-filled celebration. And pray that our Sunday worship will overflow with the presence and blessing of God.
