잘 다스리는 장로들은 두 배로 존경을 받아야 합니다. 특히 말씀을 전파하는 일과 가르치는 일에 수고하는 장로들은 더욱 그러하여야 합니다.(디모데전서 5:17)

주일아침 일찍 교회로 가는 중에 박정자 권사님의 소천소식을 전해 들었습니다. 서둘러 교회에 도착해서 주보를 프린트하고는 서둘로 병원으로 향했습니다. 오클랜드 카이저 9층, 암환자 병동.. 몇 년을 베이지역에 살면서 늘 오클랜드 카이저 9층은 암과 싸우는 분들이 머무는 곳입니다. 지난 금요일 노란 장미를 이쁘게 담아 전해드렸을 때 활짝 웃으시며 이쁘다고! 연신 이야기하셨던 모습이 마지막이었고 육신은 암과 사투를 버리시면서도 시계를 보시고는 "이 시간에 바쁜 시간인데 왜 오셨냐고" 저에 작은 타박을 주시며 여유를 보여주셨습니다. 

긴 투병 늘 한결같은 모습을 보여주셨던 권사님을 기억하며 오늘 하루를 시작합니다. 이번주 토요일(19일) 오후 5시에 교회에서 교인들 모여 다 같이 장례예식을 갖습니다. 잘 기억하시고 함께하셔서 마지막에 평온한 마음으로 인사를 나누는 시간이 되시기를 바랍니다. 

오늘 나누는 본문은 바울의 한결같은 디모데를 향한 이런 저런 지침을 기록한 내용입니다. 교회 안에 작은 시스템이 자리했습니다. 바울의 동역자이면서 제자인듯한 젊은 사역자 디모데에게 교회의 장로들을 어떻게 치리 할지, 안수를 주는지에 대해서 이야기하고, 포도주의 효용성에 대해 추천하고 있습니다. 당시의 장로는 목회자를 의미하는 것입니다. 오늘날 한인교회가 이해하는 장로의 이해와는 다르지만, 디모데가 곧 이런 목회자들을 훈련시키고 교육시켜야 하는 위치에 있음을 상기시키고 있습니다. 또한, 몸을 위해 포도주를 가끔 사용하라고 권면합니다. 이런 세밀한 것까지 알리고 권면하는 것을 보면 단순히 가르치기 위한 권면의 편지가 아니라 디모데를 향한 바울의 애틋함이 담긴 제자를 향한 스승의 마음이 느껴집니다. 

7월이 중순으로 접어들었습니다. 예상치 못한 일들이 늘 우리의 여정에 돌발적으로 발생하지만, 시간은 정해진대로 흐로고, 해야 할 일들은 그대로 남아있습니다. 분주함을 위한 잘 준비된 7월을 기대하며 바울의 세시함 편지 속에서 느껴지는 마음을 이웃들과 잘 나누시기를 기도합니다.

1 Timothy 5:17“The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching.”

On my way to church early Sunday morning, I received the news that Deaconess Jungja Park had passed away. After quickly arriving at church and printing the bulletin, I rushed over to the hospital. The 9th floor of Kaiser in Oakland—the cancer ward—is a place where many in the Bay Area have stayed while fighting cancer.

Last Friday, when I brought her a bouquet of yellow roses, she smiled brightly and kept saying how beautiful they were. That was the last time I saw her. Even while her body was struggling in battle with cancer, she looked at the clock and gently scolded me, “Why did you come at such a busy time?” Her calm and gracious presence remains vivid in my memory.

As I begin this day, I hold in my heart the image of Park, who remained steadfast through a long and difficult journey. This Saturday, July 19th at 5:00 PM, we will hold a memorial service together at church. I hope many will come to remember and send her off in peace.

Today’s Scripture passage records Paul’s practical and heartfelt instructions to Timothy. It shows that a system of leadership had formed within the early church, and Paul, as both mentor and fellow worker, was guiding the young pastor Timothy in how to care for elders, how to lay hands for ordination, and even giving advice on the use of wine for health.

While the term “elder” here refers to a pastoral figure rather than the role as understood in many Korean churches today, we are reminded that Timothy was responsible for training and overseeing such leaders. Paul’s suggestion to use wine occasionally for the sake of health also shows his deep pastoral concern. This was not just a letter of doctrinal instruction—it was a deeply affectionate message from a mentor to his beloved disciple.

Now that we are halfway through July, we’re reminded that unexpected events can suddenly appear along our journey. Yet time continues as set, and the tasks before us remain. I hope this season will be one of thoughtful preparation rather than busyness for its own sake. May Paul’s warm and sincere words inspire us to extend the same heart to those around us.
