이 세상 창조 때로부터, 하나님의 보이지 않는 속성, 곧 그분의 영원하신 능력과 신성은, 사람이 그 지으신 만물을 보고서 깨닫게 되어 있습니다. 그러므로 사람들은 핑계를 댈 수가 없습니다. (로마서 1:20)

번잡스럽던 교회는 조용해졌습니다. 심방을 하고 돌아온 교회 예배당에 오랫만에 밤에 불이 켜질때가지 있었습니다. 조용하고 시원한 바람, 그리고 교회 불빛이 우리들이 이사온후에 달라진 풍경이라는 것을 느꼈습니다. 적당한 시간에 자동으로 켜지는 외등들은 낮과는 다른 풍경으로 아름답게 보였습니다.

익숙한 시간이 아닌 다른 시간에 같은 공간은 다르게 보일 수 있습니다. 지루할 수 있는 공간이 새롭게 보이는 것은 특별한 장소를 찾아가서 발견하는 것이 아니라, 늘 머물던 시간이 아니라 다른 시간에 그 자리에 있으면 새롭게 보일 수 있습니다. 시간이 공간을 새롭게 한다는 의미입니다.

2025년 우리들은 같은 경험을 하며 살아가지만, 그 경험은 자기의 삶의 경험과 공간에 따라 다릅니다. 예전에는 당연한 것이 이제는 논쟁거리가 되어가는 광경을 보면서, 사람은 사실에 의존하는 존재가 아니라, 분위기와 프로파간다에 예민한 존재라는 것을 경험하게 됩니다.

바울의 입장에서 로마교회는 놀라우면서도 한편으로 걱정스러웠을 것입니다. 자신이 가보지 않은 곳에 자신이 전한 복음을 들고 다른 사람들이 복음을 전하고 교회를 세웠다고 하니, 이 놀라운 사건에 신비롭게 느끼면서, 아마 노파심이라는 것도 작동했을 것입니다.

같은 복음이 다른 공간에 그것도 자기가 가서 전하지 않은 곳에서 사람들에게 관심을 보이고 교회가 세워졌다고 하니 놀라운 일이 아닐 수 없습니다. 이런 의미에서 바울은 로마에 보내는 편지는 세심하면서도 교리적인 다소 어려운 이야기들을 적어냈습니다. 그중에 심판은 그냥 내버려 두는 것!이라는 구절이 오늘 본문에 등장합니다.

고난은 하나님의 다루심이고, 감사와 평안은 성령의 열매입니다. 그런데 이것도 저것도 없는 그냥 내버려두는 삶은 심판이라는 말이 꽤 로마교회에 무겁게 들렸을 것입니다.

당대 최고의 권력과 힘을 가진 강대국의 중심인 로마에 바울이 전하는 복음의 방향은 꽤 날카롭고 그들이 보지 못한 것을 볼 수 있도록 안내합니다. 보지 못했던것을 보기 시작한다는 것은 예수를 만나서 시작하는 첫번째 삶의 방향입니다. 이전에 익숙한것에서 벗어나 새로운 눈을 갖는다는 건 우리에게 특별한 경험이고 이것을 우리는 은혜라고 고백합니다.

"Ever since the creation of the world, God’s invisible attributes—his eternal power and divine nature—have been understood and seen through the things he has made. So they are without excuse." (Romans 1:20)

The once-busy church has become quiet. After making visitation rounds, I stayed in the sanctuary until late at night for the first time in a while. The quiet and refreshing night breeze, along with the church lights, made me realize that this has been a new scenery since we moved here.

The outdoor lights, which turn on automatically at the right time, looked beautiful—showing a completely different scene than in the daytime.

The same space can look entirely different when we are there at a different time. What may seem boring and ordinary can feel new—not because we go to a special place to discover it, but simply because we are there at a different hour. Time has the power to renew space.

In 2025, though we all share similar experiences, the way we experience them is shaped by our own lives and the spaces we inhabit. Seeing how things that once seemed obvious are now points of debate, I am reminded that humans are not only creatures of fact but are deeply sensitive to atmosphere and propaganda.

From Paul’s perspective, the existence of the church in Rome must have been both exciting and somewhat concerning. People he had never met had received the gospel he preached, and others had shared it, planting a church there. This would have felt mysterious and wonderful, but it probably also triggered a bit of pastoral worry.

Hearing that the same gospel had taken root in a place he had not personally gone, and that people were drawn to it, would have been astonishing. It is from this perspective that Paul wrote a letter to the Romans—carefully, and with some of his most theologically weighty words.

In today’s passage, Paul explains that God’s judgment can sometimes mean simply “handing them over”—just letting them go their own way.

Suffering can be God’s discipline. Gratitude and peace are fruits of the Spirit. But a life that is simply “left alone,” with neither of these, is a kind of judgment. This must have sounded heavy to the Roman believers.

Paul’s message of the gospel was sharp and clear, cutting right to the center of the most powerful empire of his time. His aim was to help them see what they had never seen before. Beginning to see what was previously unseen—that is the first step in a life of faith. To move beyond what was familiar and gain new eyes is a special experience, and we call this grace.

• Today we have both the Wednesday Bible study and the Young Adult Worship Service. Please pray for these gatherings. The young adults meet for worship at Trinity Chapel, 2320 Dana St, Berkeley, CA 94704, beginning at 6:00 PM. If you are able, join us to encourage and pray for them.

• The Wednesday Bible study meets at 10:00 AM and again at 7:00 PM.

• This Saturday we will have our Mission Dinner. We hope many of you will come, fill the room, and join in fellowship. Every year, the funds raised from the Mission Dinner are used to support church planting.
