오히려 속 사람으로 유대 사람인 이가 유대 사람이며, 율법의 조문을 따라서 받는 할례가 아니라 성령으로 마음에 받는 할례가 참 할례입니다. 이런 사람은, 사람에게서가 아니라, 하나님에게서 칭찬을 받습니다.(로마서 2:29)

시간이 화살같이 간다는 말에 실감하고 있습니다. 어제 8월이라고 생각했는데 오늘 9월중순으로 온것 같은 느낌입니다. 그렇게 덥더니, 선선한 바람에 가을을 느낍니다. 친구 목사와 통화에서는 성탄절 칸타타를 준비한다고 합니다. 한해를 이렇게 마무리하나 싶은 조바심이 생기기 시작했습니다.

바라기는 이런 조바심이 뭔가를 든든이 채워가는 힘으로 바뀌기를 바랄뿐입니다. 그리고 시간이 쌓이는 만큼 함께하는 모든 분들도 든든히 채워지는 것을 경험했으면 좋겠습니다. 노력이 헛되지 않고, 충분한 보상과 기쁨이 가득했으면 좋겠습니다.

바울은 유대인과 율법이라는 경계를 넘어서 확장된 "영적 할례"를 이야기합니다. 육체적인 선택과 실천보다 하나님은 그 마음 즉 유대인이라는 특권, 율법을 안다는 자신감보다 그 안에 어떤 마음을 품는지가 중요하다고 이야기합니다. "성령으로 받는 마음의 할례"는 바울이 만들어낸 말 중에 가장 적극적이고 파격적인 문장입니다. 하나님이 우리를 위해 역사하신다!는 것은 우리의 생각과 경험으로 가둬둘수 없다는 의미이기도 합니다.

시간은 분주히 흘러가며 조바심이 난다는 것도, 하나님이 세워가시는 계획을 바쁘게 따라간다는 의미입니다. 해야할일이 많다는 것도 내가 하고싶은 것이 아니라, 부지런히 몰고가시는대로 하나 하나 기왕이면 서둘러서 흐지부지 대충 훓어서 지나가는 것이 아니라, 좋은열매가 많으면 좋겠다는게 생각입니다. 깊은 기도가 필요한 시간인것 같습니다. 몰아치는대로 다 받아가지 말고 깊이 기도하며 하나 하나 소화해야할 시간이듯합니다.

오린다에서 맞는 두번째 가을입니다. 작년 9월 우리는 교회를 이전해서 첫 예배를 드렸습니다. 그 시간은 오늘 우리들에게 1년을 돌아보게 하고 어떤 열매가 있었는지를 묻는것 같습니다.

기대하기는 작년보다 더 활짝 열린 교회로, 열린교회 그리고 믿음이 더 성장한 모든 부서들, 그리고 아이들 청년들, 장년들을 기대해봅니다. 시간은 채워진다고 자연스럽게 성숙해지는 것이 아니라 지금 이 순간에 어떻게 반응하고 삶을 정하냐에 따라 신앙이 성숙해집니다.

Rather, the one who is a Jew inwardly is truly a Jew, and true circumcision is not merely an outward circumcision according to the written code but a circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit. Such a person receives praise not from other people but from God. (Romans 2:29)

I am really feeling what it means when people say, “Time flies like an arrow.” It feels like it was just August yesterday, but suddenly we are already halfway into September. The intense heat is gone, and the cool breeze reminds me that autumn has arrived. In a call with a pastor friend, he told me they are already preparing their Christmas cantata. That conversation made me feel a sense of urgency—as if the year is already coming to a close.

I hope that this sense of urgency will turn into the energy to fill my life with meaningful things. As time builds up, I hope everyone walking this journey together will also feel their lives being filled and strengthened. May our efforts not be wasted, but richly rewarded with joy and fruitfulness.

Paul speaks of an “expanded circumcision”—one that goes beyond the boundary of being ethnically Jewish or having the Law. God cares less about physical signs and more about the heart. It is not the privilege of being Jewish or the confidence of knowing the Law that counts, but the attitude of the heart. “Circumcision of the heart by the Spirit” is one of Paul’s most radical and active expressions. It means that God’s work for us cannot be confined to our own thinking or experience.

Even the sense that time is rushing and making me anxious may actually be a sign that we are hurrying to keep up with God’s plans. The many tasks before us are not just things I want to do—they are things God is driving us to complete. And I don’t want to rush through them carelessly. I hope for an abundance of good fruit. This is a time that calls for deep prayer. Instead of just letting everything crash over me, I want to pray deeply and process each thing one by one.

This is my second autumn here in Orinda. Last September, we held our first worship service after moving our church. That memory now leads us to look back over the past year and ask what fruits have been borne.

I look forward to seeing our church more open than last year—living up to its name as an “Open Church.” I look forward to seeing every department, every child, youth, and adult grow in faith. Time passing does not automatically mature us; it is our response in each moment that determines whether our faith grows and matures.
