7 “하나님께서 잘못을 용서해 주시고 죄를 덮어 주신 사람은 복이 있다. 8주님께서 죄 없다고 인정해 주실 사람은 복이 있다.” (로마서4:7-8)

행위와 믿음, 이 두가지를 구분하고, 믿음에 무게를 둔 바울의 이야기는 자칫 행위보다 믿음이 더 중요한 것으로 여기게 할 수 있습니다. 당시 바울이 이런 주장을 하게된 이유는 믿음보다도 (눈에 드러나지 않으니) 율법을 잘 지키는 행위(눈에 잘띄니까)가 하나님앞에 바로 선자 인가 아닌가?를 판단할 수 있는 기준으로 명확하게 또는 강력하게 주장되어진 것에 대해, 믿음에 대해서 진지하게 바울은 이야기하고 있는 것입니다.

그러니 결코 행위가 중요하지 않다는게 바울의 입장이 아니라는 것을 기억해야합니다.

바울은 대부분 이방인들을 만났고, 그들에게 복음을 전했습니다. 그리고 그들에게 율법보다 더 중요한 예수 그리스도의 복음을 전하는게 바울이 정한 전도의 방법이었습니다. 과감하게 율법을 이야기하지 않고, 예수의 복음(여기서 단지 예수의 이름이 아니라, 예수님이 가르치신 복음을 말합니다.)을 전하는 것이 하나님께 나아가는 방법임을 가르쳤습니다.

단순한 문장이지만 꽤 파격적인 바울의 가르침이 바울서신전체에 담겨있습니다.

바울에게 있어서 아브라함은 가장 큰 본이 되는 인물이고, 자신이 스스로 노력해서 구원에 이르는 것이 아니라, 전적인 하나님의 은혜로 말미암아 구원에 이른다는 것은 우리의 구원은 하나님의 적극적인 개입 그것을 바울은 은혜라고 부르며 다른 어떤 것보다 중요하다고 가르쳤습니다. 오늘 본문에도 보면, 다윗이 시편 32편을 통해 행위없이도 하나님의 의인으로 불리는 사람은 복이 있다고 이야기합니다.

그러니 믿음은 단순히 "믿습니다"가 아니라, 하나님이 우리를 구원하시기 위해 은혜를 베푸셨다는 것을 믿는 것이 바울이 이야기하는 믿음의 무게입니다.

어제 교회 뒤동산 끝자락과 마주한 집주인이 전화가 왔습니다. 아마 소방서에서 나무를 잘라내야하는데 방법이 교회뒤로 올라가서 잘라내고 거기에 바로 칩핑을 하는 방법밖에 없는것 같습니다. 예전에도 교회와 잘 이야기해서 그리하셨다고 하면서 부탁을 하셔서 편안하게 교회땅을 이용하시라고 말씀드리고 전화를 끊었습니다.

교회가 한인교회로 바뀌고 사람들은 조심스럽게 우리와 관계를 하며 살아가고 있습니다. 지금까지 보통은 우리가 도와주어야할 일들이고, 시간이 지나면 우리도 지역사회에 부탁을 해야할이들을 있을지 모릅니다. 이 단순한 관계는 어쩌면 우리에게 좋은 영향을 줄거라는 생각이 들었습니다.

오늘 오전에는 감독님과 한인코커스와의 만남이 있습니다. 아마 이런 저런 이야기중에 한인교회 개척을 위한 의견을 나눌 것 같습니다. 교회를 개척하기에는 어렵다고 이야기하는 시대에 그런 이야기를 나눈다는 사실도 흥미롭습니다.

우리는 세상에 우리를 모르는 사람과 부딪히며 살아가고, 우리를 이해시키고, 우리를 설명해야할때도 있습니다. 어떤때는 우리가 하는 행위로 그 설명이 가능한경우도 있을 것입니다.

바울은 믿음과 행위라는 복잡하고 어려운 이야기를 우리에게 전한다기 보다는 필요한 상황에 맞춰 예수 그리스도의 복음을 전하는데 노력했다는 것에 무게를 두면 행위와 믿음을 바울이 구분한게 아니라, 이해하기 위해 노력했다는 것을 알수 있습니다.

바울은 낯선사람들과 늘 마주했고, 그들에게 다가가기 위해 노력했습니다. 이점을 잘 이해하면 우리들이 어떤 행위로 교회가 세상에 존재할것인가?를 잘 설명해주는 것 같습니다.

1. 열린교회 사역과 교회의 부흥을 위해서 기도해주세요. 교회에 보이지 않는 분들을 기억하시고 기도하시고 안부를 물어주세요.

2. 영어예배 시작을 위해 함께 기도해주세요. 부족한것이 많은데 이를 잘 기억하고 기도를 통해 든든히 세워가도록 기도해주세요.

   
   

“Blessed are those whose wrongdoings are forgiven and whose sins are covered.Blessed is the one against whom the Lord will never count sin.” (Romans 4:7–8)

Paul’s distinction between works and faith, and his emphasis on faith, can make it seem as if faith is more important than works. The reason Paul made such a strong claim was because, in his time, the ability to keep the law (something visible and measurable) was being strongly emphasized as the main criterion for determining whether someone stood rightly before God. Paul takes this opportunity to speak seriously about faith — something that is not visible — and to bring it back to its rightful place.

This does not mean that Paul thought works were unimportant. We must remember that this was not Paul’s stance.

Paul met mostly Gentiles and preached the gospel to them. His chosen way of evangelism was to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ as more important than the law. He boldly set aside detailed discussions of the law and taught that coming to God was through the gospel of Jesus — not just His name, but the message Jesus taught.

This simple but radical teaching of Paul runs throughout his letters.

For Paul, Abraham was the greatest example, showing that salvation is not achieved by our own effort but is entirely the result of God’s grace. Our salvation is God’s active intervention, which Paul calls grace, and he teaches that this is more important than anything else. In today’s passage, David also declares in Psalm 32 that the person who is called righteous by God apart from works is blessed.

Thus, faith is not merely saying “I believe,” but believing that God has poured out His grace in order to save us. This is the weight of faith that Paul is talking about.

Yesterday, I got a phone call from the owner of the house near the back edge of the church’s hillside. The fire department apparently needs to cut some trees, and the only way to do it is to go up through the church property and chip them there. The neighbor said that in the past, they had coordinated with the church about this, so I told them to feel free to use the church grounds and ended the call.

Since our church became a Korean congregation, people have been cautiously building relationships with us. Until now, most of the time, we have been the ones helping, but as time passes, there may come moments when we need to ask the community for help as well. I thought this simple interaction could actually have a positive impact on us.

This morning, I have a meeting with the bishop and the Korean Caucus. We will likely share thoughts about planting new Korean churches. In an age where many say that planting churches is difficult, it is fascinating that we are even having this conversation.

We live in a world where we bump into strangers who do not know us, and there are times when we need to make ourselves understood and explain who we are. Sometimes, what we do — our actions — can explain that better than our words.

Paul’s focus was not to present a complicated theological debate about faith versus works, but to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ as the situation required. If we understand it this way, we can see that Paul was not dismissing works but helping people understand the gospel.

Paul constantly faced strangers and made the effort to approach them. Understanding this helps us reflect on what kind of actions will demonstrate the presence of the church in the world.

Who are the strangers you will meet today? After such encounters, share how these relationships have grown stronger.

1. Pray for the ministries of Yeolin Church and for its revival. Remember those in the church you have not seen recently. Pray for them and check in on them.

2. Pray for the start of the English service. Though we lack many things, may we remember them and build up this ministry through prayer.
