6이런 까닭에, 이 약속은 믿음에 근거한 것입니다. 그것은 하나님께서 아브라함에게 이 약속을 은혜로 주셔서 이것을 그의 모든 후손에게도, 곧 율법으로 사는 사람들에게만이 아니라 아브라함이 지닌 믿음으로 사는 사람들에게도 보장하시려는 것입니다. 아브라함은 우리 모두의 조상입니다 (로마서 4:16)

감독님과 대화하는 시간은 유익했습니다.(어제 한인코커스와 미팅이 있었어요) 가장 마음을 닿았던 이야기는 최선을 다하는 목회자들이 적어도 그들이 노력한 사역에 대해서 알아달라는 것이었습니다. 알아주는게 뭐가 중요할까 싶지만, 이름도 없이 빛도 없이 헌신하는데 적어도 감리사와 감독님은 개체교회를 위해 헌신하고 노력하는 목회자의 노력을 기억해달라는 뜻으로 들렸습니다.

사실, 한국목사님들이 사역하던 미국교회가 든든했는데, 다른 인종 목사님이 사역하면서 교회가 문닫는 일들이 일어나서 답답한 마음에 이야기한것입니다. 그런분들이 주장하는 것은 목회자의 힐링이 필요하다는 것을 주장하고 자신이 실패한 것을 방치한 리더쉽들을 비난하는 것을 들어보면 기가 막힐때가 있습니다.

이런 상황에 대한 정확한 진단과 우리가 왜 목회하고 교회를 세우기위해 노력하는지를 잘 알아야 합니다.

거의 40명이 넘는 한인목회자들이 나눈 이야기속에 여전히 해결되지 않는 문제와 씨름하는 분, 새롭게 오셔서 적응하기 위해 고군분투하는 분 그분들의 이야기속에서 간접적으로 느끼고 배우는 것들이 있습니다.

열린교회 이전후 1년이 지나면서 많은 과제들이 던져졌습니다. 대부분 기대와 소망으로 가득한 일들이다보니, 뭔가 창의적이고 생각을 많이 해야하는 일들로 가득합니다. 각자의 자리에서 최선을 다하시는 성도들의 노력과 함께 하나 하나 이루어가는 감사와 기대가 있습니다. 이런 특별한 마음을 주신 하나님께 감사하며 여전히 조심스러운 것이 있습니다. 지난주일에 말씀드린거처럼 빠르게 가려는 저의 기질을 잘 다루는 것입니다.

빠르다는게 장점일 수 있지만, 곁에서는 불안해할 수 있습니다. 생각해보면 그런 마음들이 이해가 가고, 한편으로는 저의 빠름도 이해해주셨으면 하는 마음도 있습니다. 빠르다는 것은 중요한 인식과 과정을 너무 쉽게 스킵해버리는 것처럼 보이니 당연이 그럴수 있다고 생각하면서도, 요즘 교회 사역은 속도전이라는 생각에 그런 마음을 쉽게 다스리지 못하는 것 같습니다.

반응이 빨라야 하고, 반응한것을 바로 실천하고 적용해야 그 다음에 과정으로 나아갈 수 있기때문이라는 생각이 가득합니다.

바울의 다음 과정은 로마교회가 믿음에 대한 확고한 이해가 있기를 바라는 마음이었습니다. 하나님의 약속이 율법보다 앞서며, 이런 믿음의 우선성은 구원의 보편성 즉 어느 누구나에게 열려진 하나님의 은혜와 구원의 약속을 이해하게 합니다.

바울은 이런 점에서 발빠르게 교회들이 이해하고 깊이 숙지하기를 기대했습니다. 여전히 율법으로 붙들려는 자들을 거짓교사라고 이야기하고 이들이 하나님의 은혜보다 자신들이 만들어 놓은 울타리에 가둬두는 속성을 질타했습니다.

여전히 교회에는 많은 과제가 있습니다. 어떤분은 더이상 이민이 없기때문에 교회사역이 힘들다고 이야기하고 다른 교회와의 경쟁속에 교회가 살아남을 방법이 힘들다는 이야기를 합니다. 얼핏 들으면 좋은 인사이트같지만, 제가 처음 신학교 다닐때부터 늘 교회는 힘들다는 이야기를 했지 좋은 적이 없었다는 것을 기억해야합니다.

우리는 늘 쉽지 않은 길을 향해 걸어가는 것을 사명으로 여기며 이 세상을 살아간다는 사실을 기억하시고, 한가지 하나님의 은혜! 그리고 구원의 보편성은 우리가 기대하는 하나님의 사랑과 은혜는 더 크고 놀랍다는 사실에 마음을 다해야할 것입니다.

For this reason, the promise depends on faith, so that it may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his descendants—not only to those who live by the law but also to those who share the faith of Abraham. He is the father of us all.” (Romans 4:16)

The time spent talking with the bishop was very meaningful. (Yesterday we had a meeting with the Korean Caucus.)What struck me most was the point that pastors who are giving their very best simply want their ministry efforts to be acknowledged. At first, one might think, “Why does recognition matter?” But when someone serves “without name or light,” it seems fair to expect at least the district superintendent and the bishop to recognize and remember the pastor’s faithful work for the local church.

In fact, there was a time when Korean pastors serving in American congregations were in a much more stable situation. But recently, we have seen cases where, after another pastor of a different background took over, the church ended up closing, and that is what prompted the conversation out of a heart of frustration. Some of those pastors argue that pastors need healing, and they criticize leadership for allowing their failures to remain unaddressed — and honestly, some of these claims are hard to listen to.

In moments like this, it becomes even more important to have a clear understanding of the situation, and to reflect on why we do ministry and why we work so hard to build up the church.

More than 40 Korean pastors shared during the meeting, and in their stories we heard from those still wrestling with unresolved issues, those who are fighting to adapt in a new appointment — and through their sharing, I was able to indirectly feel and learn a great deal.

As we pass the one-year mark since Yeolin Church’s relocation, we have been given many new challenges. Most of these are full of hope and expectation, which means they require creativity and thoughtful planning. Together with the faithful efforts of the congregation, we are slowly accomplishing one thing after another, and I am thankful and expectant. I also feel cautious at the same time, because, as I shared in last Sunday’s message, I need to carefully manage my natural tendency to move too quickly.

Being quick can be a strength, but it can also make those around me feel uneasy. And I understand that. At the same time, I wish others could also understand why I am quick — because I see that in today’s ministry context, speed matters. Quick response, quick implementation, and quick application allow us to move to the next steps more effectively.

Paul’s concern was similar — he wanted the Roman church to have a solid grasp of faith. God’s promise came before the Law, and this priority of faith shows that salvation is open to everyone. God’s grace is for all.

Paul wanted churches to quickly understand and take hold of this truth. He warned that those who still tried to bind others under the Law were false teachers, locking people inside fences of their own making rather than freeing them in God’s grace.

The church today still faces many challenges. Some say ministry is harder because there is no more immigration growth, or because churches are competing with each other to survive. On the surface, these sound like good insights, but I remember that even when I first entered seminary, people were already saying, “The church is struggling.” The church has never had an “easy time.”

Our calling is to walk the difficult road faithfully, knowing that this is the way of mission. Let us remember that God’s grace — the universality of salvation — is wider, deeper, and greater than what we expect, and let us set our hearts on that truth.
