1때는 제 삼십년 넷째 달 오일이었다. 그 때에 내가 포로로 잡혀 온 사람들과 함께 그발 강 가에 있었다. 나는 하나님이 하늘을 열어 보여 주신 환상을 보았다. (에스겔 1:1)

아침에 일어나 버클리에 해가 뜨는 날은 날씨가 덥고, 구름에 가려서 해가 보이지 않으면 그날은 쌀쌀한 날입니다. 여름이라고 하지만, 버클리의 기온은 평균 60도 정도 선선하고 어쩔때는 쌀쌀하게 느껴질때도 있습니다.

구름이라고 표현했지만, 샌프란시스코 해안가에서 몰려오는 안개라고 해야 정확할것 같습니다. 안개가 길거리를 덥고 있지 않고 높이 산줄기를 따라 올라가니 아랫쪽 버클리는 구름이 가득한 것 처럼 어두워지고, 산으로 올라가면 안개속을 경험하게 됩니다. 나무와 부딪히면서 물이 길 아래로 떨어지니 비가 온것은 아닐까? 하는 착각에 들때가 있습니다.

교회를 갈때 이 안개를 뚫고 가다보면 틸튼파크 골프장과 갈림길에서 왼쪽으로 가게 되어있습니다. 그 길을 따라 가면 골프장을 끼고 돌아가는데 결혼식과 큰 잔디 공원 그리고 Regional Parks Botanic Garden쯤 도착하면 그렇게 가득하던 안개는 없고 해가 내리쬘때가 있습니다. 다른 곳은 안개로 가득 한데 유독 그곳만 햇살이 내려앉는 것을 볼때면 늘 신기하다는 생각이 듭니다.

전혀 예상치 못한 햇살을 마주하면 참 아름답다는 생각이 듭니다. 이걸 다르게 보면 막막함에서 오는 불안함속에 작은 희망이 그 막막함을 잊게하는 것과 같은 느낌...

오늘부터 읽은 본문은 에스겔입니다. 역사상 가장 고통스러웠던 포로기를 배경으로 하는 예스겔의 예언은 나라가 망하고 포로로 끌려가서 바벨론에 있는 그발강가에서 하나님의 환상을 보게됩니다. 막막함 가운데 한줄기 햇살과 같은 느낌으로 하나님의 말씀을 받았을 에스겔을 생각해봅니다. 이것만으로도 우리는 에스겔을 읽을 필요가 있습니다. 전혀 예상치 못한 상황에서의 하나님이 하늘이 열어 보여준 환상을 에스겔은 전하고 있습니다.

“In the thirtieth year, in the fourth month on the fifth day, while I was among the exiles by the Kebar River, the heavens were opened and I saw visions of God.” (Ezekiel 1:1)

ReflectionIn the mornings in Berkeley, if the sun rises bright and clear, it usually means the day will be warm. But if the sun is hidden behind clouds—or more accurately, the marine fog rolling in from the San Francisco coast—the day feels cool, even chilly.

Though we often call it “clouds,” what we experience here is better described as fog, creeping up the hills from the coast. Down below, the fog makes the streets dim and gray, while higher up, it winds through the trees and soaks the branches with moisture, enough to make you wonder, “Did it rain?”

As I drive to church through this fog, I always reach a fork near the Tilden Park Golf Course and turn left. The road winds past a wedding venue, a vast lawn, and finally leads to the Regional Parks Botanic Garden. Strangely, while most of the area remains covered in fog, this particular place is often bathed in sunlight. Every time I witness this contrast—thick fog behind me and clear skies ahead—I am struck by the beauty of the moment.

It reminds me of how even in the most uncertain or dreary times, a sudden light can break through, offering hope. That unexpected sunlight feels like grace—uninvited, but deeply welcome.

Today we begin reading the book of Ezekiel. His prophecies come from one of the darkest chapters in Israel’s history—the Babylonian exile. And yet, it was by the Kebar River, far from home and in a time of despair, that Ezekiel saw the heavens open and received a vision of God.

Ezekiel’s experience was like a ray of light in total darkness. That alone gives us a reason to read his words. Through him, we are reminded that even when everything seems lost, God still opens the heavens and speaks.
