뭐가 이리 재밌었을까요? What’s so funny over there? Spill it!

9내가 너희를 이 성읍 가운데서 끌어내어, 타국인의 손에 넘겨 주어서, 너희에게 온갖 형벌을 내릴 것이니, 10너희가 칼에 쓰러질 것이다. 내가 너희를 이스라엘의 국경에서 심판하겠다. 그 때에야 비로소 너희는, 내가 주인 줄 알게 될 것이다. (에스겔 11:9-10)

에스겔 예언에서 눈에 띄는 구절은 아니 대부분의 예언서에서 등장하는 구절인데, "내가 주인 줄 알게 될것이다"라는 구절입니다. 생각해보면 하나님이 주님인지 모르고 우상에 기웃거렸다는 이스라엘의 심리는 연구대상입니다. 하나님의 선택의 역사를 보존한 민족이 시간이 지나도 여전히 하나님이 주인되심을 몰랐다는 것은 생각보다 이스라엘의 신앙은 흔들렸고, 진지하지 않았으며, 언제든지 우상을 섬길 준비가 되어 있던 민족이었던것 같습니다.

예언서는 이런 이스라엘의 민낯을 숨김없이 드러냅니다.

이런 민낯과 함께 드러나는 것은 꼭 공동체 안에 하나님의 임재와 인도를 자기식으로 해석하는 존재들이 있다는 것을 알립니다. 오늘날 기독교를 오염시키는 자들이 존재하는 것처럼 당시에도 이런 자들이 늘 있었다는 것을 드러냅니다.

오늘 본문에 등장하는 성전의 동문은 하나님의 임재가 들어나는 상징적인 출입구입니다. 그리고 그 어귀는 지도자들이 모이는 곳입니다. 하나님의 임재를 느끼며 공동체를 이끌어가는 지도자들이 머무는 것은 "하나님이 이끄시는 나라"를 소망하는 간절함이 만들어낸 전통입니다.

에스겔이 본 환상은 이곳에 25명의 지도자들이 있었고, 그중에 딱 두사람, 야아사냐와 블라댜가 예루살렘이 안전하다고 안일한 역사, 세계, 정치관으로 백성들을 방심하게 만듭니다.

지나친 경계로 불안하게 만드는 것도 문제이지만, 아무것도 아닌것처럼 방치하도록 하는 것도 문제입니다. 특히 신앙생활에서 하나님과의 관계는 늘 이 두가지가 균형있게 우리안에 자리해야합니다.

하나님에 대해서 두렵게만 생각하는 경우도 있고, 하나님을 자비롭다라고만 보는 분들이 있습니다. 하나님은 이 두가지 모습을 다 우리들에게 드러나 보이십니다. 결론적인 방향은 우리를 구원하기 위한 하나님이 계획속에 두려움과 자비가 함께한다는 사실 또한 기억해야합니다.

그러니 우리를 방심케 하는 지도자를 조심해야합니다. 그리고 우리를 두려움에만 몰아넣는 사람도 조심해야합니다. 하나님은 두가지 모습을 드러내보이시면서 결론적으로 우리를 구원의 길로 인도하신다는 것을 잘 기억해야합니다.

묵상

이스라엘과 비슷한 모습을 오늘날 우리들에게서도 찾을 수 있을 것 같습니다.

Ezekiel 11:9–10

I will bring you out of the city, and hand you over to foreigners, and I will execute judgments against you. You shall fall by the sword; I will judge you at the borders of Israel. Then you shall know that I am the Lord.

In Ezekiel’s prophecy, this is not an especially unique expression—it is a phrase that appears in many prophetic books: “Then you shall know that I am the Lord.”When we think about it, Israel’s mindset of wavering toward idols as if they did not truly know that the Lord was God is something worth studying. Even though they were the people who had preserved the history of God’s chosen covenant, their faith was unstable, lacking seriousness, and always ready to turn to idol worship.

The prophetic books reveal this unflinchingly—exposing the raw truth of Israel’s spiritual state. Along with this, they also reveal that within the community there are always those who interpret God’s presence and guidance according to their own agenda. Just as today there are people who corrupt the witness of Christianity, such people existed then as well.

In today’s passage, the East Gate of the temple is a symbolic entryway of God’s presence. And that gateway was the place where leaders would gather. The fact that leaders—who were supposed to feel the presence of God and guide the community—stayed there was part of a tradition born out of a longing for a “nation led by God.”

In Ezekiel’s vision, there were twenty-five leaders present there. Among them, two men—Jaazaniah and Pelatiah—gave the people a false sense of security with their complacent understanding of history, world affairs, and politics, telling them that Jerusalem was safe.

It is indeed a problem to create anxiety through excessive alarm, but it is just as much a problem to allow complacency by pretending there is nothing wrong. In our walk of faith, our relationship with God must hold both aspects in balance.

Some people view God only through the lens of fear, while others see Him only as merciful. God reveals both sides of Himself to us. The ultimate direction is this: God’s plan to save us always holds together both His fearsome holiness and His tender mercy.

Therefore, we must beware of leaders who lull us into complacency, and also be cautious of those who only drive us into fear. We must remember that God reveals both aspects so that, in the end, He may lead us into the path of salvation.

Meditation

I think we can find similarities to Israel’s attitude in ourselves and in the church today.

Intercessory Prayer

• Please pray for Rev. Ki-Uk Min, who once served in our church and has now accepted a call to a church in Florida. His eldest son, Chris, who had been faithfully attending our church’s youth group, will transfer schools to Florida even though he is in his senior year. Pray for God’s peace to be upon their family as they relocate. Please also pray for Evangelist Hee-Won Jin, who will remain here—apart from family—to continue serving the church and pursuing his studies.

• Pray for all our church ministry workers, that they may bear good fruit in their studies, livelihood, and ministry.
