그러므로 나 주가 말한다. 새 잡듯이 사람의 영혼을 사냥하는 데 사용하는 너희의 부적 띠를, 내가 물리치겠다. 내가 그것을 너희의 팔목에서 떼어 내고, 너희가 새 잡듯이 사냥한 영혼들을 풀어 놓겠다 (에스겔 13:20)

8월 같은 시간, 오하이오에서는 스크렌턴 선교사 선교 140주년 행사를 한국감리교회와 오하이오연회와 함께 진행하고 있고, LA에서는 연합감리교회넥서스, 타인종목회자, 여성목회자가 연합으로 Convocation을 하고 있습니다. 이 두 행사는 제너레이션과 젠던 그리고 모임이 목적이 분명하게 다르게 보입니다. 교회로서는 가장 한가한 시간(사실 교회는 바쁜데 연회가 한가한 시간이죠)에 이 두 모임이 주는 메시지는 과거의 기억과 미래의 준비입니다. 이 둘의 모임을 하나로 엮어주는 것인 "한인총회"입니다. 9월마지막 주에 시작되는 이 총회모임이 이 두 제네레이션과 젠더 그리고 하나의 주제로 엮어냅니다.

이런 모임의 방향은 드러나는 주제는 달라도 한가지, 일치를 위한 노력을 보입니다. 생각과 삶의 방향 비전도 다른 이들이 모여서 어떻게 하면 하나의 공동체를 세워갈지를 고민한다는 것이죠.

교회도 그렇습니다. 다양한 케릭터들이 힘을 다해 하나의 공동체를 엮어나갑니다. 이런 저런 경험과 사건들이 있고, 그 안에 서운함과 기쁨과 감사가 있고 더 나아가 사랑과 상처도 품게될수도 있습니다.

예언서의 가장 큰 기능은 흐트러진 공동체를 어떻게 하면 하나님께 돌아서게 할것인가?에 대한 고민이 담겨있다는 것입니다. 에스겔은 거짓예언자들이 엉켜놓은 공동체를 어떻게 하면 회복시킬 수 있을지에 대해 치열하게 노력하고 있습니다. 신앙공동체의 다른 면은 복종과 신뢰를 담보하는 강한 믿음을 강요할때가 있습니다. 그리고 이에 반하는 사람이나 공동체를 공격할 수있는 과격함까지 보일 수 있습니다. 그런 자리에 하나님의 사랑, 은혜와 믿음의 실천은 드러나지 않고 광신이라는 또 다른 이름을 세상은 붙여댑니다.

예언자의 기능은 광신을 벗겨내고, 다시 하나님의 사랑과 은혜를 회복시키는데 있습니다. 이기적인 욕망에사람들을 움켜쥐고, 마치 세상의 모든 것을 자신이 쥐고 흔드는 것처럼 구는 교회와 목회자가 존재할때가 있습니다. 마치 예수님시대에 율법교사나 바리새인들과 같이 자신이 모든 것을 꿰뚫어보고 사람들을 판단하는 권한이 주어지는것 마냥 구는 사람들과 비슷한 모양입니다. 이런 자들을 틈바구니에서 예수님은 하나님나라 운동을 펼치셨습니다. 억압된 자를 자유케 하시고, 신앙은 결코 사람이 만들어낸 그들의 방향에서 결정되는 것이 아니라, 전적인 하나님의 은혜와 이끄심으로 세워지는 것이라고 예수님이 말씀하십니다.

에스겔의 예언이 바로 이런 회복과 돌아섬에 대한 선언입니다. 거짓을 부셔내고, 진실앞에 공동체가 바로세워지기를 바라는 그 마음을 잘 읽어내시기 바랍니다.

Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against your magic charms with which you ensnare people like birds, and I will tear them from your arms; I will set free the people you ensnare like birds. (Ezekiel 13:20)

At the same hour in August, in Ohio, the Korean Methodist Church is holding the 140th anniversary celebration of the missionary work of Scranton in partnership with the Ohio Annual Conference. Meanwhile, in Los Angeles, the United Methodist Church Nexus gathering is taking place, bringing together pastors of different races and women clergy for a Convocation.These two events seem to have very different purposes—one focused on generations and the other on gender. Yet both happen during what is often considered the “quiet season” for the church—although in reality, the church itself is never truly quiet; it’s just the Annual Conference calendar that is lighter.The message of these two gatherings can be summed up in two themes: remembering the past and preparing for the future. What links them together is the upcoming Korean American United Methodist Convocation, which will take place in the last week of September. This gathering will weave together these generational and gender conversations under one unified theme.

The direction of such gatherings—though the topics may appear different on the surface—shares one common goal: the pursuit of unity. People with different visions, life experiences, and perspectives come together to wrestle with the question: How can we build one community together?

The church is much the same. It is woven together by diverse characters who, with all their strength, labor to form one body. Along the way, there are different experiences and events; moments of hurt, joy, and gratitude; even love and wounds that must be carried together.

One of the primary functions of the prophetic books is to grapple with this question: How can a fractured community be turned back to God? Ezekiel wrestles deeply with how to restore a community entangled by false prophets.

Another side of faith communities is that they sometimes demand obedience and trust in a way that pressures people into a rigid belief structure. At times, this can turn into harshness toward those who resist or differ, and the love, grace, and lived faith of God are nowhere to be seen. The world simply labels it “fanaticism.”

The role of the prophet is to strip away such fanaticism and restore the love and grace of God. Unfortunately, there are churches and pastors who grip people tightly for selfish ambition, acting as if they hold all the power in their hands—much like the teachers of the law and the Pharisees in Jesus’ day who believed they had the authority to judge everyone.

But in the midst of such systems, Jesus launched the movement of the Kingdom of God—setting the oppressed free and declaring that faith is never determined by the directions set by human power, but solely by the grace and leading of God.

Ezekiel’s prophecy is a declaration of this very restoration and turning back. It breaks apart falsehood and calls the community to stand once again upon the truth. I encourage you to read this passage with that heart in mind.
