그래서 이스라엘 족속이 다시는 나를 떠나서 길을 잃지도 않고, 다시는 온갖 죄악으로 더러워지지도 않게 하여, 그들은 나의 백성이 되고, 나는 그들의 하나님이 되게 하려는 것이다. 나 주 하나님의 말이다.”(에스겔 14:11)

날이 꽤 더워졌습니다. 아니 이제 정상으로 느껴집니다. 여름의 기억은 그래도 더위를 통해 이어지는것 같습니다. 팔을 걷어부치고 시원한곳을 찾고자하는 마음이 생기는 건 동시에 그 시절의 기억을 돌이키는 일을 합니다.

제가 군대를 가기전 (1995년 이전) 지구온난화와 기상이변에 대해서 심각하게 생각했던적이 있습니다. 여름성경학교 주제로 활용된적도 있고, 환경콘서트라는 거창한 퍼포먼스도 매년 열렸던 적이 있습니다. "내일은 늦으리!"라는 이름으로 열렸던 콘서트는 추억의 시간이 되었지 실제 세상을 바꾸지는 못한것 같습니다.

여전히 지구온난화에 대한 우려는 커지고 있습니다. 한국 여름의 평균 온도가 35도 (화시95도)라고 하니까 예전보다 5도정도 윗도는 상황입니다. 장마도 사라지고 집중호우로 물난리를 겪는다는 소식을 듣고, 아랫지방에서 수확하던 과실들이 점점 북쪽에서도 열리고 있다는 이야기등이 지구온난화를 실감나게 합니다.

전세계가 더위에 허덕일때 우리는 제법 시원한 여름을 보내다가 이제야 여름을 맛보는 것 같습니다. 다시 예전과 같은 그런 기후를 경험하게 될지는 모르지만 지속적으로 걱정과 우려는 우리의 삶에서 떠나지 않을것 같습니다.

그러면 왜 걱정과 우려는 가득한데 현실적으로 바뀌지 않을까요? 환경오염이 음모라고 하는 사람도 있겠지만, 사람들이 그렇게 걱정하고 지구온난화를 막아야한다고 하면서 실제로 그런 실천과 방법들이 행해지지 않는 이유는 무엇일까요?

마치 에스겔이 예언을 해도 그 예언을 신뢰하지 않는, 오늘 본문에 등장하는 장로들과 같은 모습입니다. 이스라엘도 여전히 우상을 숭배하는 것에서 벗어나지 못하고 지속적으로 반복하는 것도 오늘날 성경을 통해 확인하면 답답하기 이를때 없습니다. 너무한것 아닌가? 그래도 하나님이 선택하셔서 출애굽도 경험하고 가나안땅에 정착도 했는데 왜 하나님을 버리고 우상에 빠지는 것일까? 이 뻔한 지적과 질문에도 역사는 이스라엘이 여전히 허우적대고 있었다는 것을 보여줍니다.

한참 시간이 흘른후 우리를 되짚어보는 후대의 지구에 있는 사람들도 이와 비슷하게 지적할수 있을 것 같습니다. "알고 있었는데 바뀐게 없다." "말은 많지만 실제로 한것은 없더라" 이해할수 없는 눈으로 우리를 평가할 수 있습니다.

바뀌어야 하는데 바뀌지 않은 것, 구체적으로 현장에서 일어나지 않는 것이 있나요?

“Then the house of Israel will no longer stray from me, nor will they defile themselves anymore with all their offenses. They will be my people, and I will be their God, declares the Sovereign Lord.”— Ezekiel 14:11 (NIV)

The weather has gotten quite hot. Or perhaps this now feels normal. After all, our memories of summer seem to be shaped through the heat.When we roll up our sleeves and look for a cool place to rest, that instinct also triggers memories of summers past.

I remember becoming concerned about global warming and climate change even before I entered the military—so, before 1995. Those themes were once used for Vacation Bible School programs, and we even held what we called “environmental concerts”—grand performances that took place annually. One of them was titled "Tomorrow Is Too Late!" It’s now just a memory rather than a movement that changed the world.

Concerns about global warming have only increased. The average summer temperature in Korea now reaches around 35°C (95°F)—about 5 degrees higher than it used to be. We hear of monsoon seasons fading away, replaced by destructive downpours, and crops that once grew only in the south now thriving in the north. These are undeniable signs of climate change.

While much of the world has been suffering in record-breaking heat, we've had a relatively mild summer—until now. It feels like summer has finally arrived. Whether we’ll ever experience the climate of the past again is uncertain, but the anxiety and concern about the future seem unlikely to fade from our lives.

But why is it that, despite so much concern and worry, there is so little real change? Some claim environmental problems are just conspiracies. But even among those who say we must fight global warming, why is there so little actual action?It reminds me of the elders in today’s passage from Ezekiel—those who sought out the prophet but still clung to their idols in secret. Even though Ezekiel prophesied to them, they did not trust or obey God’s message.

Israel, too, could not break free from its idol worship. Over and over again, they fell back into sin. When we read about it today, it feels utterly frustrating.“Why would they do that?” we ask. “Weren’t they chosen by God? Didn’t they experience the Exodus and enter the Promised Land? How could they turn away from God and fall into idolatry again?”

And yet, despite these familiar criticisms and questions, history shows Israel struggling, flailing, repeating the same sins.

One day, future generations on this planet might look back at us and say the same:“They knew the truth, but nothing changed.”“They said a lot, but did nothing.”They may judge us with the same disbelief.
