네가 네 언니와 아우보다 더 역겨운 죄를 지으므로, 네 언니와 아우가 유리한 판단을 받았으니, 너는 마땅한 수치를 당해야 할 것이다. 너 때문에 그들이 의로운 것처럼 보이게 되었다. 네가 이렇게 네 언니와 아우를 의롭게 보이게 하였으니, 너도 부끄러운 줄 알아라. 네가 마땅한 수치를 당할 것이다.”(에스겔 16:52)

더위의 맛을 제대로 보여주는 요즘입니다. 작년 한창 교회공사할때 느꼈던 더위를 느끼면서 그 시간을 어떻게 지나왔나 싶을 정도로 기억을 생생하게 떠오르게 합니다. 기억은 생각해서 나는 것도 있겠지만, 느껴지면서 나는 것도 있는것 같습니다. 후각으로 느낌으로 기억은 더욱 생생해지고, 그런 기억은 그만큼 내 삶을 세워가는 기본적인 감각들이 되어서 영원히 그 기억을 잊지 않게 하는 것 같습니다.

이런 감각을 생각해보면, 이스라엘이 하나님을 무시하고 우상을 선택했다는 것은 단순한 실수가 아니라 단단한 결심으로 일어난 이라는 생각을 하게됩니다. 오늘 본문은 이런 이스라엘을 강도높게 꾸짖습니다. 다른 어떤 민족들 보다 이스라엘의 죄가 큰것은 우리가 함께 기억할 수 있는 이스라엘과 하나님과의 관계를 말도안되게 깨뜨린 이스라엘의 행위가 이해가 가질 않기 때문입니다.

에스겔서는 집요하게 왜 이스라엘이 하나님으로 부터 버림을 받았고, 나라는 망하고 포로로 끌려오게 되었는지를 잘 보여줍니다. 사마라이와 소돔보다 더 무거운 죄를 지었다는 표현은 지금 포로로 끌려오는 모든 상황의 원인은 결국 이스라엘이 저지를 죄때문이라는 것을 강조하고 있습니다.

에스겔은 하나님이 주신것을 다른 신에게 다 바쳤다고 표현하고 있습니다. 얼마나 큰 죄를 지었는가?에 대해 이 한 문장으로 어떤 죄를 향해 삶을 살았는지를 잘 보여줍니다.

더위는 곧 가고 가을이 느껴지는 계절이 올것입니다. 반복되는 시간속에 우리들의 기억을 다시 생생해지고 그때 무엇을 해야하는지를 잘 알고 있습니다. 마땅한 것을 하기 위해 우리는 기억을 잘 되살라여합니다. 그래야 새로운 것들을 시작할 수 있습니다.

신앙생활은 생생히 기억해내기 위한 노력이라고 볼 수 있습니다. 분주함으로 삶이 살아지는대로 살다보면 어느순간, 어떻게 여기까지 와있을까?싶은 그 순간, 하나님이 어떤 삶을 이끌고 계시고, 나는 지금 어떤 기억에 이끌려사는지를 확인할수 있습니다.

여름에서 가을로 가는 길목, 우리의 신앙을 든든히 세울 수 있는 시간입니다.

“You have committed a more detestable sin than your sisters; so they are more righteous than you. You must bear your disgrace, for you have made your sisters appear righteous. Because you have justified your sisters, you too must be ashamed and bear your disgrace.” (Ezekiel 16:52)

Lately, we are experiencing the full taste of summer heat. It reminds me vividly of the sweltering days last year when our church was under heavy construction. I wonder how we even made it through that season. Some memories come from conscious thought, but others are triggered by sensations—smells, feelings—that bring them back even more vividly. Such sensory memories become part of the basic fabric of our lives, ensuring that we never truly forget them.

When I think about this kind of sensory memory, I realize that Israel’s choice to ignore God and turn to idols was not a mere accident but a deliberate decision. Today’s passage rebukes Israel with strong words. The reason Israel’s sin was greater than that of any other nation is that they shattered their covenant relationship with God—a relationship we can all recall—so egregiously that it is beyond understanding.

The book of Ezekiel persistently shows why Israel was abandoned by God, why their nation fell, and why they were carried into exile. The statement that they committed greater sins than Samaria and Sodom underlines that the ultimate cause of their exile was their own wrongdoing.

Ezekiel describes how Israel took everything God had given them and offered it to other gods. In one sentence, he shows not only how great their sin was but also what direction their life was heading toward.

The summer heat will soon give way to the coolness of autumn. In this cycle of seasons, our memories come alive again, and we know what must be done. To do what is right, we must revive those memories so that we can begin new things.

The life of faith can be seen as an effort to remember vividly. When we let busyness carry us along, we may suddenly find ourselves wondering, “How did I get here?” It is in that moment that we can see how God has been leading our life and what memories are guiding us now.

At the turning point from summer to autumn, we have an opportunity to strengthen our faith.
