어르신들의 섬김을 기억해주세요! Let us remember and honor the service of our elders!

또 나는 그들에게 안식일도 정하여 주어서, 이것이 나와 그들 사이에 표징이 되어, 내가 그들을 거룩하게 하는 주인 줄 알게 하였다. (에스겔 20:12)

지나친 과거 집착은 현실감각을 떨어뜨려 부정적일 수 있습니다. 그런데 에스겔의 예언은 아니 거의 모든 예언서는 출애굽의 기억을 강조하고 광야에서 이스라엘이 어땠는지를 기억하라고 이야기합니다. 이스라엘의 신앙의 중심은 출애굽입니다. 하나님이 이스라엘 백성을 노예에서 해방시켰다! 애굽에서 이끌어내셨다라는 이 사건의 전말은 "하나님이 우리를 구원하신다" 그리고 "하나님의 열심으로 구원받았다"라는 하나님의 전적인 의지를 확인할 수 있습니다.

광야에서 시간은 이렇게 구원받은, 해방된 이스라엘이 그럼에도 불구하고 "하나님이 아닌 우상을 섬기는 죄를 저질렀다"라는 반성적 시간을 우리에게 알려줍니다.

이 전개는 단순히 이스라엘의 잘못을 꼬집는 것이 아니라, 하나님의 직접적인 구원의 사건을 경험한 이스라엘 조차도 그 신앙을 잊어버릴 수 있다라는 메시지가 강합니다.

성경을 읽다보면, 이런 질문이 생기죠..어떻게 그럴 수 있지? 하나님이 저렇게 까지 하셨는데 그걸 새까맣게 까먹고 다른 우상을 섬길수 있지? 이게 우리들이 경험하는 신앙생활의 근본적인 문제이고 늘 경계해야할 것이라는 것을 알려줍니다.

결정적인 것은 여기서 끝나지 않고 하나님은 여전히 이런 이스라엘이 돌아오도록 노력하신다! 나라가 망하고 심판이 임한것 같지만 그럼에도 불구하고 그 사건을 가르고 하나님께 돌아오기를 간절히 바라는 하나님의 마음을 에언자들, 에스겔은 전하고 있습니다.

이번주일에 총회를 합니다. 갑작스럽게 잡힌것은 아니고 지난 봄에 임원회를 통해 추경예산을 통과시켜야해서 교인들의 동의를 얻어야 할일이 생겨서 총회를 열기로 한것입니다. 오린다교회로 이사할때 공사비용을 연회에서 빌렸는데 곧 건물이 팔려서 갚을 수 있을 줄 알았는데 상황이 복잡하게 되서 이자를 내야하는 예산을 세워야하는 관계로 총회에서 이를 알리고 나누려고 합니다. 여기에 한가지더 사역을 하다보니 예산과 실제적 수입에 차이가 있어서 이 또한 교인들과 나눠야할것 같아서 총회를 통해 보고하고 통과시키려고 하는 것입니다.

잘 안되서 생긴 문제가 아니라, 이런 저런일들을 하다보니 생기는 예상치 못한 일로 인해서 생기는 일이니 깊이 그리고 긍정적으로 함께 이야기를 듣고 나누었으면 좋겠습니다.

이 시간을 지나갈 것이고, 이 시간을 기억하고 추억할 시간이 올것입니다. 그러면 이 때가 가장 하나님이 가까이 계시고 역사하시고, 동행하시는 시간이라는 고백이 있을 수 있습니다.

어려움을 이야기하는 것 같지만, 하나님이 부족한 저희들을 크게 그리고 힘있게 사용하시기 위해 함께하신다는 것또한 경험하실 것입니다. 에스겔의 예언도 비슷합니다. 상황은 절망적인데 이 현실에 묶여있지 않고, 하나님은 여전히 열심히 우리를 구원하시려고 노력하신다는 것을 선언하고 있습니다.

현실을 넘어선 하나님의 계획이라는 것이 어떤 것들이 있을 수 있을까요? 여러분들의 현실은 큰 기대로 이겨냅니까? 아니면 절망으로 낙심이 클때가 있습니까?

“I also gave them my Sabbaths as a sign between me and them, so that they would know that I the Lord made them holy.” (Ezekiel 20:12)

An excessive obsession with the past can dull our sense of reality and become negative. Yet, in Ezekiel’s prophecy — indeed, in almost every prophetic book — the memory of the Exodus is emphasized. Israel is urged to remember who they were in the wilderness.

At the very center of Israel’s faith is the Exodus. God set His people free from slavery! He brought them out of Egypt! This event declares: “God saves us” and “We are saved by God’s zeal alone.” It is God’s will, God’s initiative, God’s grace.

The wilderness years remind us that even a people who had been saved and liberated still sinned by worshiping idols instead of God. This was a time of reflection, showing us how fragile human faithfulness can be.

The message is not simply to point out Israel’s failure but to highlight something sobering: even those who directly experienced God’s salvation could forget it and turn to other gods. We find ourselves asking, “How could they do that? How could they forget what God had done?” Yet, isn’t this the very struggle of our own faith lives? To forget, to drift, to worship other things — this is our constant danger.

But the decisive point is this: God does not give up. Though judgment fell, though the nation was lost, still God longed for His people to return. Through Ezekiel and the other prophets, God reveals His heart — a heart that longs for His people to turn back, even through their pain.

Today’s Context

This Sunday we will hold a congregational meeting. It is not sudden — it was already planned since last spring, when our leadership council approved the need for a supplementary budget.

When we moved into Orinda Church, we borrowed construction funds from the Conference. We expected to repay quickly once the building was sold, but things became complicated. Now we must budget for interest payments. In addition, as ministry has expanded, expenses have outpaced income. These matters must be shared and approved together with the congregation.

This is not a failure but the reality of ministry. As we engage in many works, unexpected challenges arise. I hope we can listen and talk deeply and positively together. One day we will look back on this time as the season when God was closest to us — guiding, shaping, and walking with us.

It may sound like we are only talking about difficulties, but in fact this is a testimony: God is with us even in our weakness, using us powerfully for His purpose. Ezekiel’s prophecy is the same — though the situation seemed hopeless, God’s relentless zeal to save His people remained.

• Pray for the college student tabling ministry on August 25–27, and for the back-to-school worship service on the 27th.

• Pray for our congregational meeting this Sunday after worship, that it may be filled with wisdom, unity, and trust in God’s leading.
