봉사의 손길! 군부대 취사장 같습니다. Helping Hands! It looks like a military unit kitchen.

“너희가 스스로 이르기를 ‘우리가 이방 사람 곧 여러 나라의 여러 백성처럼 나무와 돌을 섬기자’ 하지만, 너희 마음에 품고 있는 생각대로는 절대로 되지 않을 것이다. (에스겔 20:32)

요즘 교회마다 사역자를 구하는 구직란이 심각합니다. 이유는 근처 신학교에 유학생들이 더이상 오지않고 있고, 신학교마다 학생들이 줄어들고 있기때문입니다. 한국의 신학교들은 벗꽃피는 순서대로 문을 닫고 있고, 예전에 높은 문턱을 자랑하던 신학교들이 이제는 늘 미달에 학교의 존폐위기에 마주하고 있습니다.

미국의 신학교는 종합대학교와 통폐합을 대안으로 생각하고 기존의 학교들이 대부분 구조조정을 시작한지 오래입니다. 명맥을 이어나가기도 버거운데 교회도 마땅한 사역자를 찾는게 쉽지 않은 상황이다보니 사역자를 구하는 어려움에 처한것 같습니다.

사역자를 구하는 어려움을 호소하는 교회는 그래도 가능성과 기대를 가지고 준비하기 위한 노력에서 일어난 일이니 나름 긍정적인면이 있습니다. 반면에 있던 사역자도 구조조정해서 정리하는 교회도 있다고 하니까, 사역도 어렵기는 마찬가지인것 같습니다.

여러가지 원인이 있겠지만, 기독교가 누리던 호황기는 막을 내리고, 종교없는 시대에 만족하며 살아가는 가장 절정인 시기에 삶을 살아내고 있다는 생각입니다. 대부분의 미국교회 교인들은 연령이 높고 앞으로 미래는 옆에 있는 교회와 통합하는 것을 미래 계획으로 설정하고 있습니다.

이런 현실속에 교회부흥을 기대하고 소망하는 것은 시대를 거스르는 것처럼 보이지만, 여전히 사람들이 모이는 교회가 있고, 영적인 목마름에 함께하고픈 공동체를 찾고 있다는 것은 여전히 교회에 주어진 책임이 크다는 것을 알 수 있습니다.

우리 교회도 교회 이전후에 이런 저런 변화를 마주하고 있습니다. 가능성과 기대가 더 큰 상황에서 교회는 더 힘을 내야하는 상황입니다. 하나님이 우리에게 이런 축복을 주신것에 감사해야할 것 같습니다. 축소와 긴축이 아니라 확장과 기대를 준비한다는 건 우리에게 주어진 책임이 그만큼 크다는 것이겠죠.

오늘 에스겔을 조상들이 광야에서 지은 죄와 현재에 이를 본받고 불순종하는 이스라엘 백성을 꾸짖고 있습니다. 또한 이런 상화에서 오히려 회개와 반성이 아니라 빈번하게 마주하는 이방나라와 같이 강성해지고 싶은 마음에 여전히 우상에 기웃거리는 잘못된 결심으로 세상을 사는 존재들을 향해 과연 하나님이 이를 그냥 보고 계실까?라는 지적을 하고 있습니다.

시대마다 주어진 책임이 있습니다. 시대마다 교회는 늘 새롭게 변한 상황을 마주합니다. 오늘날 기독교는 근본주의와 엉뚱한 정치적 간섭으로 노출되면서 기독교의 본질을 드러내는 것보다 욕심많고 이기적인 것들이 마치 교회를 대표하는 것처럼 도드라져 보입니다. 이를 기독교전체로 오해하는 것에 심각한 타격을 받는 것이 요즘 교회의 모양입니다.

그러면 이시대에 선한 사역을 위해 노력하는 교회가 있을까? 이런 교회들은 도드라지고 눈에 띄지 않습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 온전한 예수 그리스도의 복음을 전하는 것에 힘을 다하는 교회들이 있습니다. 교회를 확장하는 것보다 교인들이 성숙해지는 것을 위해 노력하는 교회들은 여전히 존재하며 주어진 책임을 위해 최선을 다하는 교회들이 있다는 것을 우리는 기억해야합니다.

8월 중순, 한가함을 뒤로하는 분주함이 기다리고 있습니다. 행사도 많고 고민할것도 많이 있습니다. 이런 중에 하나님이 우리에게 맡기신 사명을 놓치지 않고 끝까지 부르심에 응답하며 기대와 희망이 되는 교회공동체로 열린교회를 세워가기를 바랍니다.

1. 9월에 행사가 많습니다. 9월6일토요일에는 선교디너가 저희교회에서 있고, 9월20일에는 외부단체인 "아리 앙상블"이 우리교회를 빌려서 공연을 합니다. 9월27일 토요일에는 "만남중창단의 가을공연"이 저희교회에서 있고, 더불어 네팔선교를 위한 선교헌금을 하려고 합니다. 분주함이 기다리는 것이 아니라, 우리에 주어진 선물처럼 해야할 일들이 가득하다는 기쁨으로 함께해주세요.

2. 성주형 성도의 어머니 (95세)가 위독하셔서 성주형, 박황애 성도분들이 급하게 한국에 가셨습니다. 위해서 기도해주세요.

Ezekiel 20:32“You say, ‘We want to be like the nations, like the peoples of the world, who serve wood and stone.’ But what you have in mind will never happen.” (Ezekiel 20:32)

These days, the job postings from churches seeking pastors and ministers have become very serious. The reason is that international students no longer come to nearby seminaries, and enrollment in theological schools is steadily declining. In Korea, seminaries are closing one after another “in the order the cherry blossoms bloom,” and schools that once prided themselves on being difficult to enter are now facing the crisis of survival due to lack of applicants.

In the U.S., most seminaries have long begun restructuring, with many turning to mergers with larger universities as an alternative. Even maintaining their legacy has become burdensome, and churches are finding it equally difficult to secure capable ministers.

Still, when a church is actively seeking a pastor, there is something positive: it shows that the congregation has hope and expectation, and is preparing for the future. On the other hand, some churches are reducing staff due to restructuring—showing that ministry itself is also becoming difficult.

There may be many reasons, but it seems clear that the “golden age” of Christianity has passed, and we now live in a peak era where many people are content with a life without religion. Most American churches have aging congregations, and their future plans often involve merging with neighboring churches.

In this reality, expecting revival may seem like going against the times. Yet, there are still churches where people gather, and communities that people long to join out of spiritual thirst. This means that the responsibility entrusted to the church remains very great.

Our church, too, is facing changes after relocation. But since we are in a position with more possibilities and expectations, we must press forward with greater strength. We must be thankful that God has given us this blessing. Preparing not for contraction but for expansion means that our responsibility is that much greater.

In today’s passage, Ezekiel rebukes Israel for imitating the sins of their ancestors in the wilderness and for their present disobedience. Instead of repentance and reflection, the people longed to be like the strong nations around them, turning their eyes again to idols. God points out this misplaced resolve and asks whether He will remain silent in the face of such unfaithfulness.

Every era carries its own responsibility. In every age, the church must face a new and changing reality. Today, Christianity has been exposed through fundamentalism and misguided political entanglements. Instead of revealing the essence of the faith, selfishness and greed often stand out, as though they represent the church. This distorted image has caused serious damage to the witness of the church.

But are there still churches striving for faithful ministry in our time? Yes, even if they are not widely recognized. There remain churches dedicated to proclaiming the pure gospel of Jesus Christ, focusing not on expansion but on the spiritual maturity of believers. These are the churches that continue to take their God-given responsibility seriously.

Now in mid-August, the season of busyness lies ahead. Many events await us, and with them, many things to consider. Yet in the midst of all this, may Yeolin Church not lose sight of the mission entrusted to us by God. May we remain faithful to His call, becoming a community of hope and expectation.

Let us not view these as mere busyness, but as gifts and responsibilities entrusted to us. May we join together in joy as we serve faithfully.
