내가 너희를 목자의 지팡이 밑으로 지나가게 하여, 너희의 숫자를 세며, 언약의 띠로 맬 것이다.(에스겔 20:37)

어제는 꽤 더운 날이었습니다. 창문을 열면 뜨거운 바람이 들어오고 버클리도 하루종일 내리쬐던 태양의 열기에 저녁이 되니 방안에 가득했습니다. 여름이 끝나는 무렵 마지막 더위가 발목을 잡듯 하지만 오늘 아침은 가을이 성큼 다가온것 처럼 선선합니다.

어제 연락이 뜸하던 분들의 전화를 여러번 받았습니다. 큰 아이의 학교에서 총기사고가 났는데 괜찮냐는 안부의 물음이었습니다. 다행이 아무도 다친 사람도 없고, 아이는 토요일에 학교로 돌아가니 걱정말라는 이야기로 오랜만에 통화를 마무리했는데 걱정해주는 마음에 귀함을 느꼈습니다. 그냥 지나치치 않고 확인하고 위로하려는 마음은 우리들이 기대하는 삶이라는 공간에서 경험하기를 원하는 관심이라는 생각이 들었습니다.

교회안에 갑작스러운 사고로 어려워 하는 분들이 있습니다. 문찬호 성도는 다리수술후 거의 회복되어서 지난주 교회에서 뵈었고, 갑작스럽게 팔목 골적을 당한 이지수집사님과 김미순 집사님은 여전히 회복중에 있습니다. 슬아자매는 일하다 다친 허리로 인해 고생하고있고, 한혜순 사모님도 집에서 넘어지셔서 발목과 고관절에 골절을 당하셨습니다.

예상치 못한 사고로 다치신 분들을 위해 지난주 늘봄속에서 교회 점심을 준비하고는 그것을 도시락을 싸서 보냈다고 합니다. 이런 마음을 주신 하나님의 은혜가 놀랍고 이를 주저하지 않고 실행한 교회 어르신들의 따뜻한 마음이 교회를 더욱 사랑으로 가득채우는 것 같습니다.

시간은 가고 계절이 바뀌고 변화를 마주하며 살아가는 삶인데 이런 관심과 사랑이 계속해서 이어지는 교회는 복이 있는것 같습니다.

오늘 본문에서 에스겔의 예언도 결국 하나님의 심판의 방향은 파괴가 아니라 돌아온자들을 다시 일으키는 회복을 향하고 있다는 것을 읽어낼 수 있습니다. 하나님의 주권적인 다스림앞에 이스라엘은 다시 회복의 기회와 은혜를 경험하게 됩니다.

포로라는 이미 결정된 심판앞에 에스겔은 하나님이 이런 틈바구니속에서 어떻게 백성을 구원하시고 새로운 계획을 세우는지를 보여주고 있습니다. "전적인 하나님이 주권"앞에 맡기는 것이야 말로 이미 무너진 이스라엘을 다시 세우는 은혜로 인도합니다.

변화의 기회는 계속 주어집니다. 똑같은 시간이 우리를 붙드는듯 하지만, 시간은 우리를 조바심내게 할뿐 절대로 우리의 삶을 그자리에 두도록 내버려두지 않습니다. 변화는 우리를 두렵고 위험한 공간으로 몰고가는 듯하지만, 예상치 못하게 던져지는 관심과 사랑으로 우리는 용기를 얻습니다.

삶도 이렇게 살아지는데, 하나님과 함께한다는 삶의 모양은 우리를 한공간으로 몰고가지 않고 다양한 경험과 은혜의 공간으로 그리고 하나님의 주권안에서 가장 큰 경험으로 우리들은 삶이 살아진다는 것에 감사할 수 있습니다. 우리는 이런 특별한 삶을 살고 있습니다.

“I will make you pass under the shepherd’s rod, and I will count you and bind you with the bond of the covenant.” (Ezekiel 20:37)

Yesterday was quite a hot day. When I opened the window, the hot wind blew in, and even in Berkeley the heat of the sun that poured down all day filled the room by evening. It felt as though the last heat of summer was trying to hold on, but this morning the air is cool, almost as if autumn has quickly arrived.

Yesterday I received several calls from people I had not heard from in a while. They asked if everything was alright after hearing of a shooting incident at my eldest child’s school. Thankfully, no one was hurt, and my child will be returning to school on Saturday. We ended the conversation with reassurance, but I felt deeply touched by their concern. The willingness not to overlook but to reach out, confirm, and comfort—that, I realized, is the kind of attention and care we long to experience in the space of life together.

In our church as well, there are those who are going through difficulties because of sudden accidents. Brother Moon Chan-ho, after leg surgery, has nearly recovered and was seen in church last week. Meanwhile, Deaconess Lee Ji-soo and Deaconess Kim Mi-soon are still in recovery after sudden wrist fractures. Sister Seul-ah continues to struggle with a back injury sustained at work, and Mrs. Han Hye-sun recently fell at home, suffering fractures in her ankle and hip.

In response, the Neulbom small group prepared church lunch last week and packed it into lunchboxes to deliver to those who were injured. What a marvelous grace of God that stirred such hearts, and what a warm love of the elders of the church who did not hesitate to act. Their kindness fills our church with even more love.

Time moves on, seasons change, and we live facing transitions. Yet a church where such love and concern continue to be shared is truly blessed.

In today’s passage, Ezekiel’s prophecy shows us that God’s judgment is not ultimately destruction, but restoration—lifting up those who return. Before the sovereign rule of God, Israel would once again experience grace and the opportunity for renewal.

Even in the face of exile, which was already a determined judgment, Ezekiel shows how God would work in the midst of such crisis to save His people and establish a new plan. Entrusting everything to the “absolute sovereignty of God” is what leads broken Israel into the grace of being raised up again.

Opportunities for change continue to be given. Time may feel as though it holds us in place, but in truth it never leaves our lives standing still. Change may seem to drive us into fearful and dangerous places, yet through the unexpected concern and love that comes to us, we find courage.

Life itself unfolds in this way. And life lived with God does not drive us into a single confined space but opens us to diverse experiences and spaces of grace. Within His sovereignty, we find the greatest gift—that our lives are truly lived out in gratitude. Indeed, we are living such a special life.
