“사람아, 내가 너를 이스라엘 족속의 파수꾼으로 세웠다. 그러므로 너는 내가 하는 말을 듣고, 나를 대신하여 그들에게 경고하여라. (에스겔 3:17)

에스겔에 대한 또다른 이름은 "파수꾼"입니다. 성벽에서 위험을 알리고 공동체를 살려는데 첫번째 경고를 알리는 파수꾼, 주저해도 안되고 지나쳐도 안되고 딱 거기에 맞게 역할을 잘해내야 공동체가 위험에서 벗어날 수 없습니다.

자신의 책임을 다하고 듣지 않고 그러거나 말거나 하는 것은 파수꾼의 책임이 아니지만, 알리지 않아서 공동체가 무너지면 그건 파수꾼의 책임입니다.

간단하지만 무거운 이 직책을 예언자인 에스겔에게 맡기신 이유는 이미 망해버린 나라에 희망을 선포하기 위해서는 "경고"가 우선이라는 뜻입니다. 자포자기 할 수 있는 역사적 현실속에서 "경고"는 어떤 의미일까? 이미 파수꾼의 역할을 끝났고 나라는 이미 망했고, 포로로 끌려온 상황에서 다시 에스겔에게 파수꾼의 역할을 맡긴 이유는 무엇일까?

현실은 다 끝난것처럼 보이지만, 여전히 이스라엘이 회복될 가능성에 무게를 두고 예언을 선포하라는 것입니다. 필요한것을 전하고 눈에 보이는 것에 마음을 빼앗기지 말고 그너머를 볼 수 있는 눈을 갖고 예언을 하라는 것일것입니다.

이런 에스겔의 역할에 지금을 살아내는 우리들은 언제어디서든 깨어 기도하라는 의미를 다시금 깨닫게 해줍니다.

주일은 우리가 가장 신경을 쓰는 신앙이 자세가 드러나는 시간입니다. 월요일 그리고 화요일쯤이면 신앙의 자세는 느슨해집니다. 당연합니다. 집중하는 것에 따라 삶의 방향이 결정되니 주일이외에 다른 시간은 오직 주님만을 바라보며 산다는 건 사실 삶의 분주함이 허락하지 않는 것 같습니다. 그런데 이런 삶의 분주함속에 파수꾼 처럼 우리의 신앙의 방향을 자극할 수 있는 파수꾼과 같은 것을 준비해야할듯 합니다.

바라기는 아침 묵상이 여러분들의 좋은 파수꾼이 되기를 바랍니다. 익숙해지고 식상해지는 것에서 벗어나 매일 말씀이 주어지는 것에 귀를 기울이고 분주한 하루 속으로 들어가면 분명히 든든힌 파수꾼의 목소리를 잘 들을 수 있을 것입니다.

에스겔에게 주어진 파수꾼의 책임은 오늘날로 보면 어떤 역할이어야 할것 같아요?

“Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the people of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me.” (Ezekiel 3:17)

Another name for Ezekiel is “watchman.” A watchman stands on the wall, alerting the people to danger and giving the first warning that can save the community. A watchman must not hesitate, overlook the threat, or exaggerate it. Only by doing his job precisely and faithfully can the community be protected.

If the watchman gives the warning and the people do not listen, it is not his fault. But if he fails to speak, and the community is destroyed, then the responsibility lies with him.

This role is simple but heavy. God entrusted Ezekiel with this calling because even in a nation that had already fallen, hope must begin with a warning. What meaning does “warning” have in a time of despair, when all seems lost? Why would God still appoint Ezekiel as a watchman when the destruction had already come and the people were in exile?

Because the situation may seem finished, but God's plan for Israel is not. Ezekiel is called to proclaim that restoration is still possible. He is told to speak what is needed—not what is obvious to the eye. He must have vision beyond what is visible, and speak the truth that sees beyond despair.

This calling of Ezekiel reminds us, who live today, of the importance of being spiritually awake and prayerful at all times.

Sunday is the day we pay the most attention to our faith. By Monday or Tuesday, our spiritual posture can start to loosen. That’s normal. Our focus determines the direction of our lives, and beyond Sunday, it's not easy to keep our eyes on the Lord in the midst of daily busyness. But perhaps, like Ezekiel, we also need something like a watchman to help us realign our faith throughout the week.

I hope that this morning’s devotion will be that watchman for you. May it pull us out of the familiar and the mundane, and draw our ears to God’s Word each day. When we begin our day with Scripture, even amidst the noise, we will surely hear the strong and steady voice of the watchman.
