준비되었습니다. I’m ready

전쟁을 모면한 사람들은 포로가 되어 끌려가, 이방 사람들 속에서 살면서, 비로소 나를 기억할 것이다. 그들이 음란한 마음으로 내게서 떠나갔고, 음욕을 품은 눈으로 그들의 우상들을 따라 가서, 내 마음을 상하게 하였으므로, 그들은 자기들이 저지른 악행과 그 모든 혐오스러운 일을 기억하고, 스스로 몸서리를 칠 것이다 (에스겔 6:9)

에스겔서에서 등장하는 주인공은 "남은자"들입니다. 이 용어는 포로기, 그리고 포로기 이후 회복과 돌이킴의 상징으로 등장하는 존재들입니다. 나라가 망하고 하나님이 어디계시냐?라는 조롱이 난무하던 시절에 이 남은자들은 여전히 하나님을 향한 마음이 떠나지 않고, 다시 회복될 그 나라를 기대하고 소망하며 살아간 자들입니다.

포로기 1세들만 이야기하는 것이 아니라, 2세 3세 즉 바벨론에서 태어났어도 그 소망을 붙들고 살던 자들은 "남은자"들이라고 이야기합니다. 이들을 위한 에스겔의 예언은 하나님은 돌이키는 자를 일으켜 다시 새로운 역사를 준비하신다는 고백을 이어갑니다.

이런 간절함과 처절함이 느껴지는 포로기의 남은자들을 향해 하나님은 에스겔에게 이들을 향한 희망의 메시지를 전합니다. 한편으로는 심판이 왜 일어났는지를 말씀하시면서 한편으로는 남은자들을 향한 자비를 선포하시는 하나님은 우리들이 이해할 수 있고 납득할 수 있는 판단으로 에스겔을 불러내셨습니다.

어제 전화한통이 왔습니다. 교회뒷쪽에 보면 젊은 청년이 사고로 목숨을 잃은 것을 안타까워하며 부모와 가족들이 기념식수를 한 곳이 있습니다. 철판에 써내려간 자녀의 이른 죽음에 대한 안타까움을 확인할 수 있습니다. 아마 교회가 한국교회로 바뀌었고, 가족중에 하나가 이를 이전해야하는것은 아닌지 궁금해서 연락이 온것입니다.

처음 교회를 레노베이션할때 세운 원칙중에 하나가 이전 교회가 건물에 수고한 흔적을 그대로 보존하는 것이었습니다. 어떤 고백과 간절함이 베어있는 것을 훼손하지 않고 비록 저희가 이 교회 빌딩을 사용하게되었어도 그 흔적을 기억하는 것이 옳다고 여겼기때문입니다.

어쩌면 우리들이 이 교회안에 남은자들입니다. 전혀 상관없는 사람들의 이름이 교회 곧곧에 남아있습니다. 이분들은 헌신했고 마음을 헐어 이런 공간을 준비했습니다. 그 마음을 기억하고 그 자리가 여전히 남아있어서 전혀 상관없는 우리들에게도 기억될 수 있다는건 서로 다른 공동체 전혀 연결점이 없는 사람과 사람이지만, 하나님을 향한 간절함이 남아있는 우리들은 생각한것보다 더 단단한 연결점이 있습니다. 그 연결점의 의미가 바로 에스겔서에 등장하는 "남은자"입니다.

전화한 분의 우려는 그 흔적을 철거할가봐 혹은 그것을 치워야 한다면 자신들이 하겠다고 연락이 온것을 우리는 당신네 기억을 그대로 함께 기억하기를 원하다는 말을 하고 통화를 마무리 했습니다.

긴 역사의 물줄기 속에 같은 공간에서 함께 공동체를 꾸리고 그 공간을 기억의 자리와 예배의 자리로 함께 그 기억들을 공유한다는 것은 엄청나게 가까운 관계라는 뜻입니다.

묵상

남은자는 모두가 포기하는 가운데 한가닥 희망을 붙들고 있는 소수를 말하는 것이 아니라, 하나님이 마련한 새로운 계획을 위해 꿈꾸는 자들입니다.

1. 유스아이들이 준비하는 유스나잇과 콘서트가 아이들과 부모들이 모두 즐겁게 준비할 수 있도록 기도해주세요.

2. 청년들이 수련회를 준비중에 있습니다. 수련회 준비가 잘 되어서 은혜로운 시간을 가질 수 있도록 기도해주세요.

“Then those who escape the sword will remember Me among the nations where they are taken captive. They will recognize how I was hurt by their adulterous hearts, which turned away from Me, and by their eyes, which lusted after their idols. They will loathe themselves for the evil they have done and for all their detestable practices.”— Ezekiel 6:9

In the book of Ezekiel, the central figures are the "remnant."This term refers to those who symbolize repentance and restoration during and after the Babylonian exile. In a time when the nation had fallen and people mockingly asked, "Where is your God now?", these remnants held tightly to their faith and longed for the day when God would restore their land.

These are not just first-generation exiles. Even second- and third-generation descendants, born in Babylon, who lived clinging to this hope, are called the remnant. Ezekiel’s prophecy to them affirms this truth: God raises up those who turn back to Him and begins a new chapter of history through them.

To these desperate, suffering remnants in exile, God gives Ezekiel a message of hope. While clearly speaking about the reasons for judgment, God also proclaims mercy for the remnant. It is through this tension that God calls Ezekiel—not with incomprehensible wrath, but with a justice that can be understood, a mercy that invites return.

Yesterday, I received a phone call.Behind our church building, there’s a spot where a young man tragically lost his life in an accident. His family, in sorrow, planted a tree in his memory. On a metal plaque, heartfelt words express their grief over his untimely death.

Now that the church has become a Korean congregation, one of the family members reached out, wondering whether the tree or memorial might need to be moved. They offered to do it themselves if necessary.

But from the beginning of our use of this church, one of our guiding principles during renovation was to preserve the traces of those who came before us. We believed it was only right to remember the prayers, sacrifices, and love that were embedded in this space—even if it now belongs to a different congregation.

In a way, we are the remnants within this church.The names inscribed throughout the church—on plaques, windows, or trees—belong to people we have never met. But they served and poured their hearts into this place.By remembering their faith, by keeping their presence visible, we realize that even though we may be strangers to one another, we are deeply connected by our longing for God.

That connection—that invisible bond—is the very essence of what the "remnant" in Ezekiel represents.

In the end, I told the caller gently that we had no plans to remove the memorial. I said, “We want to remember your loved one, just as you do.”And that was how the call ended.

To share the same space in the flow of such a long history—to build community in it, to make it a place of worship and memory—is to form a relationship far closer than we realize.

Meditation

The "remnant" is not just a few survivors barely holding on in a sea of despair.They are those who dare to dream of God's new plan even when everything seems lost.

1. Please pray that the Youth Night and concert the youth are preparing will be a joyful and meaningful time for both the youth and their parents.

2. Please pray for our young adults as they prepare for their upcoming retreat. May it be a time filled with grace and spiritual renewal.
