주님께서 그에게 말씀하셨다. “너는 저 성읍 가운데로 곧 예루살렘으로 두루 돌아다니면서, 그 안에서 일어나는 모든 역겨운 일 때문에 슬퍼하고 신음하는 사람들의 이마에 표를 그려 놓아라.”(에스겔 9:4)

멀리 포로로 끌려온 에스겔에게 주어진 환상은 "왜 유다가(또는 이스라엘이) 이런 심판을 받게되었는가"라는 반성문의 내용같습니다. 오늘 읽은 본문은 마치 요한계시록에 등장하는 "짐승의 표"를 받는 장면과 비슷합니다. 성경을 읽다보면 해아래 새것이 없는 것처럼 구약성경의 내용을 신약성경에서 인용하는 경우가 많습니다. 이런 역사적 또는 문학적인 표현의 이해 없이 단순히 현재에 이 문장을 신비적인 요소로 또는 종말의 때를 준비하는 문자적 의미로만 받아들이면 성경을 깊이 이해할수가 없다는 것을 기억해야합니다.

성경을 이해하는 것과 개인적인 신념을 주장하는 것을 오해하는 것을 자주 목격하게됩니다. 성경중심, 말씀중심이라는 뜻은 성경을 깊이 이해하기 위해 노력하는 것이지 자신의 신념에 성경을 갖다 붙이는 것을 말하는 것이 아닙니다. 대부분의 이단들이 성경을 자기 마음대로 해석하고 자기들이 믿고 싶은대로 가져다가 해석하는 것을 통해 교리를 만들어냅니다. 그럴싸 하죠 그런데 분명히 이단입니다. 기존의 교회들도 이런 위험이 빠질수 있습니다. 내스타일로 신앙생활을 해야 교회가 그래야한다고 주장하는 분들이 있을 수 있는데 이는 더욱 겸손히 교회와 예수 그리스도의 복음을 잘 이해하려고 노력해야합니다.

유스 아이들이 지난 주일에 각자의 탤런트를 준비한 시간을 가졌습니다. 가족들과 함께 처음해본 행사인데 아주 즐거웠습니다. 어떤 분들이 교인들이 전부 보았으면 좋았겠다고 합니다. 그만큼 아이들이 마련한 시간에 어른들도 함께 행복했기때문입니다. 그래서 내년에도 또 하기를 바라는 기대가 생겼습니다.

좋으면 기대가 생기고, 기대를 통해 우리는 준비 즉 비전을 세워갑니다. 개인적인 신앙의 신념 또는 이것을 다르게 표현하면 기대라고 할 수 있을텐데 이 기대는 말 그대로 교회전체의 방향이 아니지만, 함께 그 길을 갔으면 하는 비전이라고 할 수 있습니다. 그러니 여기에 성경적진리를 붙이는 것은 말이 안됩니다.

이런 설명을 드리는 이유는 혹, 누군가가 성경적진리, 또는 말씀중심을 외치며 누군가를 저울질 하는 분들을 만나면 이런 이해를 통해 그런분들이 어떤 실수를 하고 있는지를 분별하기를 바라는 마음입니다.

오늘 에스겔서는 분별하는 신앙에 대한 이야기를 하고 있습니다.

“Go through the city of Jerusalem and put a mark on the foreheads of those who grieve and lament over all the detestable things that are done in it.” (Ezekiel 9:4)

The vision given to Ezekiel, who was far away in exile, feels like a reflective statement asking, “Why has Judah (or Israel) come to face such judgment?” Today’s passage is reminiscent of the scene in Revelation where people receive the “mark of the beast.” When reading the Bible, we notice that many parts of the New Testament quote or echo the Old Testament, as though there is “nothing new under the sun.” Without understanding these historical or literary expressions, if we interpret such verses only as mystical elements or as literal signs to prepare for the end times, we will miss the deeper meaning of Scripture.

I often witness confusion between truly understanding Scripture and simply asserting one’s personal beliefs. To be “Bible-centered” or “Word-centered” means to strive to deeply understand the Bible, not to twist it to fit one’s own preferences or convictions. Most heresies arise because people interpret Scripture however they wish and shape doctrines according to what they want to believe. It might sound persuasive, but it is clearly heresy. Even established churches are not free from this danger. Some people may claim that the church must cater to their personal style of faith, but such attitudes call for greater humility and a deeper effort to understand the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the church.

Last Sunday, our Youth had a special time to share their talents. It was the first event of this kind with their families, and it was truly joyful. Some people even said, “It would have been wonderful if the entire congregation could have seen this,” because the joy the kids prepared was shared by the adults as well. Naturally, there is now a hope that we will do it again next year.

When something is good, it sparks hope, and through hope, we begin to prepare—that is, we form a vision. Personal faith convictions—or, to put it differently, our “hopes”—are not necessarily the direction of the entire church, but they can be seen as visions we wish to walk together toward. However, attaching the term “biblical truth” to such personal expectations is not appropriate.

I share this explanation because I hope you can discern, when you encounter those who claim “biblical truth” or “Word-centered” faith as a way to judge others, what kind of mistake they might be making.

Today’s passage from Ezekiel speaks to us about discerning faith.
