요한계시록 13 : 1~10, 2024.12.10 (화)

“사로잡혀 가기로 되어 있는 사람이면, 사로잡혀 갈 것이요, 칼에 맞아서 죽임을 당하기로 되어 있는 사람이면, 칼에 맞아서 죽임을 당할 것이다.”여기에 성도들의 인내와 믿음이 필요합니다. (요한계시록 13:10)

오늘 등장하는 두짐승은 사탄의 하수인을 상징적으로 나타내는 짐승입니다. 하나는 바다에서 또 다른 하나는 땅에서 등장하는 이 두 짐승은 교회의 박해를 실천하는 자들을 말하는 것입니다. 당시 로마의 황제 도미티아누스는 자신을 주님으로 신으로 숭배할것을 강요합니다. 박해의 시작은 바로 이런 황제의 요구에 거부했기때문입니다.

역사적으로 보면 기독교인들은 로마의 법을 잘 지키는 모범 시민들이었다고 합니다. 특별한 모임을 하는 이 기독교인들, 즉 교회에 대한 보고가 올라와서 눈여겨보면 특별하게 문제 될 것 없는 오히려 모범 시민으로 로마에 도움을 주는 자들로 보고가 되었습니다. 그런데 이런 모범 시민들이 "우상숭배"앞에서는 그 고집을 꺾지 않는 반역자로 보여진것입니다.

도미티아누스는 스스로를 신이라고 부를만큼 자기 도취와 권력에 취해있던 자였습니다. 인간이 자기가 하고 싶은 대로 살수 있다는 게 얼마나 큰 힘이고 권력이 되고 그 힘을 누리고 싶어지는지를 잘 보여줍니다.

이를 요한은 사탄의 하수인이라고 이야기합니다. 로마의 황제는 기독교인들을 박해하고 죽이는 것을 명령합니다. 이유는 자기의 명령을 잘 따르지 않는다는 것 그것도 다른 것들을 다 잘 지키지만, 자신을 신으로 경배하지 않는다는 이유로 기독교인들을 박해하는데 힘을 쏟습니다. 요한은 이를 "사탄이 부리는 하수인"이라고 합니다. 세상을 자기 중심으로 해석하고, 자기가 정말 신이라고 생각하는 이를 향해 요한은 정당하게 저항하고 이들에 위협에 무너지지 말것을 당부합니다.

그래서 기독교인은 불의한 권력앞에 아무리 어떤 핍박이 와도 당당할 수 있어야 합니다. 그리고 그들에게 예언자적 목소리를 아끼지 말아야 합니다.

묵상

기독교의 박해와 순교는 "불의함에 굴복하지 않은 것"에서 비롯되었습니다.

“Whoever is to go into captivity will go into captivity; whoever is to be killed with the sword will be killed with the sword.” This calls for patient endurance and faithfulness on the part of God’s people. (Revelation 13:10)

The two beasts introduced today symbolically represent the agents of Satan. One rises from the sea, and the other from the land. These two beasts signify those who actively persecute the church. During this time, the Roman Emperor Domitian demanded to be worshipped as both Lord and God. Persecution began when Christians refused to comply with this demand.

Historically, Christians were known as exemplary citizens who adhered faithfully to Roman law. Reports concerning these Christians—particularly their gatherings, or church meetings—would describe them as upstanding individuals who posed no significant problems and even contributed positively to Roman society. However, these same model citizens were seen as stubborn rebels when it came to idol worship, refusing to compromise on their faith.

Domitian, who was so intoxicated with self-adulation and power that he referred to himself as a god, exemplified the human tendency to be seduced by power and to indulge in its allure. His actions demonstrated the lengths to which humans could go when consumed by the desire to wield unchecked authority.

John identifies these individuals as "agents of Satan." The Roman emperor persecuted Christians and ordered their execution simply because they refused to worship him as a god, even though they adhered to all other laws. John boldly declares such figures to be “tools of Satan.” Against those who interpret the world through a self-centered lens and believe themselves to be divine, John exhorts believers to resist justly and stand firm, refusing to bow to their threats.

Thus, Christians must remain steadfast, even in the face of unjust power and persecution. They are called to boldly resist such forces and to proclaim prophetic truth without hesitation.

Reflection

Christian persecution and martyrdom stem from a refusal to yield to injustice.
